USS Alabama, nicknamed the Mighty A, was an impressive piece of American engineering. She was the final South Dakota class battleship to be built and the 6th ship overall in the United States Navy to bear the name of the 22nd state. Her main battery guns fired a total of 1,252 rounds at enemy targets during her career. She shot down 22 enemy aircraft during her time in the Pacific and earned 9 battle stars for her efforts. Today she serves as the centerpiece of a memorial park on the shores of Mobile Bay dedicated to all Alabamians who have participated in the armed conflicts of the United States.
