USS New Mexico BB 40 - "The Queen of the Seas"
USS New Mexico (BB-40) was the lead ship of her class. Nicknamed the “Queen”, she was one of the most advanced warships afloat when she was commissioned into the US Navy in 1918. And, although she didn’t get a chance to prove herself during World War 1, she saw plenty of action in the Pacific during the 2nd World War and collected 6 battle stars for her efforts.

I was a Bosun during my career in the Navy. I was blessed to have served aboard the newest version of USS O’Bannon during my time. DD987 was obviously quite a bit different than the 4 stacker and this Fletcher class DD that came before us, but the lineage was never forgotten. Thank you Shipmates for all that you did for our country during the war efforts that required so much from so many including incredible efforts by our Allies !

Crossing the T makes no sense in twentieth century naval warfare. You would be exposing your broadest profile of your ship to the enemy and all he has to do to aim his guns is fire directly in front of him while you, as the moving object, have to constantly adjust your aim at the enemy's narrowest profile.

He had served on the Kirkpatrick from 43-45 and re upped in July of '50. His station was in CIC plot. I have a large full color picture of the 450 . I didn't even know it existed until after we lost dad in "91. Mom said that they had forgotten about it because they put it up because they were afraid I would take it to school and get it torn up.

Three japanese imperial navy heavy cruisers were sunk... Three others heavily damaged. Many hundreds of Japanese and aircraft gun crews were killed because the United States destroyer's industry or escorts rapid-fire 5 inch guns, peppered the superstructure and upper decks of these big ships, with so many shells so quickly. The japanese were dumbfounded. The US lost 2 destroyers, one destroyer escort. And one escort carrier... We lost more people than we lost during the battle of midway actually. Hats off to the pilots that day on the escort carriers and the cruise of the carriers who launched anything with wings no matter how much or how little ammunition or what bombs it had or didn't have on board. Pilots lined up onto the japanese ships and open their bombay doors or open torpedo doors which caused the japanese to think they were being attacked and caused them to take Evasive action, Even though the american pilots didn't even have anything on board their airplane to use as a weapon they were faking... Doing anything they could do to buy time for help to come and for the little escort carriers to try to get away. It was a team fight... A proud day for the United States navy, where the average sailor Had to make up for some bad decisions.By the american admirals that day who got greedy chasing big japanese carriers off in the far distance

My next door neighbor William " Bill" Ritter was on the Aaron Ward. His father had fougjt for the Austrians in World War 1 and he was raised in New Yotk City. He died in 2008. He use to go to his reunion I wanaa say every few years. He was awareded a Bronze Star with a V device for kicking the 40 mm and 5 inch gun shells over board as they were jamming up the deck. He was blown over board and spent 3 days in the water after one of the Kamikaze hit. They then sailed back to New York City all the way around the world. I remember they had a ship that fired rockets that got hit and went up like a roman candle. Now my mind is cloudy since he passed almost 20 years ago. His wife Irna an Austrian war refugee died in 2022. He was a great man, worked in Hermans sporting goods in Glen Oaks till he retired. Bill died from Alzheimers. But he never forgot those days. Thanks for making this.

My Uncle was a Pilot of Kingfishers in Funa Futi, Tuvalu. He and a wingman were on patrol searching for the crew of a reconnaissance bomber including WW I Ace of Aces, Eddie Rickenbacker. Late into the search they found a part of the crew. My Uncle was lower on fuel so it was decided that HE would return to base to get help ... ( NO RADIO ALLOWED) ... The Squadron's CO returned and the airman they could not fit in the ACFT were lashed to the Wing... the Skipper then water taxi'd nearly 10 nms to a PT boat. Coincidentally, All three of the pilots (including my Uncle) would retrain and transfer to CARRIER Squadrons... None of the three would live to see the end of the war.

The Pearl Battleships settled the score….. but Halsey, the egomaniac, should have left the South Dakota’s and Iowa’s to deal with the Center Force instead of chasing Carriers with no planes. He knew the Center Force was just there. If those brave tin cans didn’t sacrifice themselves fighting like Archangel’s countless Marines would have been massacred. I’m no Admiral, but there was no reason you needed the battle wagons chasing the carriers. He had ~600 planes!!
