  • An instructional video of Mark Morton demonstrating the Texas All-State Audition Excerpt for Double Bass 2018-19 Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5 Excerpts #1-4
    Oops! For Excerpt #2, I meant to say measures 265-266, and measures 297-300. (Math was never my strong suit...but I DO know about compound meter!)

    Hello Friend! Could you point me to a method of typing the fifth string tuned to Si (B)? it's because I have a 5-string double bass ... (I'm a beginner) thank you very much!

    I much prefer a double bass to not use vibrato but rather concentrate on perfect intonation, dynamics, and phrasing.

    • @DrMarkMorton
      @DrMarkMorton  Před 4 lety +2

      Yes, in many ways, I agree with that aesthetic, but the expectation in orchestra for music of the 19th century is almost constant vibrato. For better or for worse, a bass player will not get past the first round of an audition without vibrato.

      DrMarkMorton maybe in North America but not so in Europe (the birth place for much of the music we play).

    • @Anonymous-rp4hn
      @Anonymous-rp4hn Před 4 lety

      DrMarkMorton vibrato for the violins, violas, and cellos but I disagree for the bass. The majority of music we play was written when we had gut strings to play on and the wrapping we had wasn’t very good. Composers wanted an organ like tone for the bass, not something that emulated the cello. Vibrato in the lower register for a double bass can really distort the pedal tones of an entire orchestra. Here in Europe (Cologne Symphony) we do not use vibrato unless it is a lyrical passage in the mid to upper register.

    If you need to explain what a compound meter is these students shouldn’t be playing this excerpt for an all state audition. Idiots guide to all state auditions, really hope not. Culture above all if you please.

    • @DrMarkMorton
      @DrMarkMorton  Před 3 lety

      Again, and I repeat “culture above all” as self explanatory as it is. This is classical music, not a personal acknowledgement agenda.

      Dont gatekeep. You'd be amazed how good a player can be while having some gaps in their understanding. One can be able to play compound time signatures perfectly well without necessarily knowing their prescribed name; they're not mutually exclusive.
