- Got this awesome DeWalt 20v max weed trimmer to replace a stihl trimmer that has to go to the shop every summer before I can use it. I got about 2 batteries ran thru it and it messed up so they sent me a replacement that ended up being a Black and Decker corded string trimmer, then they sent me the correct replacement.
My girlfriend's De Walt 20 v battery trimmer was running slow and then stopped. I watched videos on you tube about fixing them. I took it apart and didn't find any bad wires. What I did do is lubricate it trigger with WD40. Expecting nothing, but it worked! It runs fast and cuts good and doesn't shut off on it's own. I can't say what fixed it but it did work in this case.
I just took mine apart trying to figure out why mine was running lumpy. Everything spun smoothly except the motor. Once I opened the little cap on top of the motor, theres a secondary cap with 5 wires going to it. The circuit board on that cap has a chip missing, and looks like the spinning motor slapped it around after it fell off. I can’t find the cap by itself, and a replacement motor costs around what the whole tool is worth. Mine was refurb, so maybe I get special problems.
I've had the same issue just recently start. Going to try calling or emailing, but I've had it for a year now. Not sure if they will warranty unit at this point. Very disappointing. :/
Any follow up on this?
I’m sure all of you made sure first grass has not wound up around the shaft. Not cleaning that out and allowing the motor to fight against that will burn it out. It may start by slowing down. No telling what’s happening to the circuitry as it heats up from overworking.
I had a different problem that I’ve seen here. I just bought mine. Used it 3 times for a short time and the whole head (not the string feeder) is falling off the pole. Same issue, screws are tightened down all the way. Still spins easily. I may have to drill a hole to put a threaded bolt and nut on it or glue it on? Damn Chinese. So proud of what they’ll never achieve. Pride in their workmanship. We could all learn from the Japanese. I’d buy anything made in Japan, but I’d prefer made in the U.S.A.
i have same problem as well . they should have recalled this and refund us the money .were is all the good lawyers.
BOUGHT ONE FEB 13 2020 ..QUIT AFTER A MONTH US..RECEIVED A REPLACEMENT AUGUST 10TH 2020..USED IT TODAY FOR ABOUT 10 minutes it quit...WTH..FOR $ 200.00 Guy at HOME DEPOT ADVISED TO GET AN ECHO...
might need to replace the new head bush...
Bearing on motor goes bad from smacking bump string feeder on concrete… bump easy on grass
Someone below said the newer ones work better, no they don’t! Mine is 11 month old 3 hours of use and the motor started smoking and then it locked up. These are trash.
get the 20v dewalt weed trimmer. they work much better. in 1 year only had to clean grass that was stuck in the motor compartment. still works great!
It's the motors magnet snapped they worse the snap is the slower it goes
Ive been hearing the heads have been having a lot of issues by where the motor is at
I hope the new one doesn't mess up. I really like not having to mess with gas and it cuts pretty good when it works correctly. Also I have plenty of batteries.
ya does look good haven't bought one because of that reason grass some how finds its may inside the brushless motor
I have the exact same problem. I bought it last summer and barely used it. There are no service centers near me so now I have to ship it back to them. I no longer have the original box, they don't provide a shipping box. This whole process is very annoying. I am wondering how you got a replacement without sending the old one in. UPS wants to charge me 40 bucks just for a box! I probably won't have a working one back before it snows here!
+lifeisgood they sent me a new one and I used that box to send the old one back. They also sent me a paid shipping label. I was using my new one the other day and it started to do the same thing so I don't know what I will do now. I don't want to go back to gas and I don't want a bunch of different types of batteries to deal with.

They told me I have to send it in for them to look at (and try to repair) before they would consider sending me another one. I said other people online had the same problem and you sent them a new one so they had the box to send the broken one back. They said it is handled on a case by case basis and I have to send mine to them. Turns out they don't even have any in stock to send me if it comes to that anyway. Sorry yours is acting up again. Makes me really question the value of this trimmer.
Same issue here. Hopefully I get a warranty replacement. The head would barely turn.
How long have you had it? Is it the 20volt or 60 volt? My replacement for the 20 volt was pretty easy and quick...
mine did the same thing after little use I just hung it up on the shelf and bought a gas trimmer, but I still have this trimmer I still want to fix it but should I trash it instead? I cant find much info on this turd of a trimmer.
I got a DeWalt 60 volt trimmer and it has been running great for over 2 years now
How has the new one held up? I'm really thinking about picking one up so I appriciate any feed back Thanks!
The new one is working great, but I don't do very much trimming so I think I might have about 3 to 5 hours of use on it. That's why I got it though, it uses the same batteries as my tools and there is no carburetor or sparkplug to have to maintain. I would suggest getting one but do yourself a favor and keep the receipt, the box is optional, when they sent me the replacement I just used there box to send mine back. One last thing getting the broken one replaced was easy. I didn't even have to call them I just sent them a email and they got my address and sent me a black and Decker corded trimmer at first, which is pretty funny to me, so another email and the the right one showed up. THANKS for watching.
+sdd1986 ok cool Thanks for the response I to have the 20v line which is awesome so I'm gonna jump on this, once again Thanks for the response
it junk don't waste you money it the worst thing DeWalt ever made
Buy a gas one, don’t waste money on this crap.
where did you buy it from? I bought one from the home depot a day ago and they only have the 2 piece shaft. Now this one is the 1 piece shaft and I like it better for that. please help.
+burner936 I got my first one from Amazon and the replacement came from DeWalt. Hope that helps
Mine lasted a year and it just stopped working and I really did very little with it. It was the motor it just made a clicking noise and wouldn't run. Bought a DCST922, time will tell on this one🤷♂️
Check for loose connector in the handle.. That fixed mine :)
@@stockjcm8003 It went to the road and bought a new one
Mine also was the 922 and quit spinning for no reason. Junk
today even Home-depot not push to sale them they know they junk
They had problems with the early ones the newer ones work great I have had no problems and in my opinion works just as good as the milwaukee without the weight
+Big Daddy I was thinking about trying a new one, especially since my little Troy build vibrates so bad my hands almost go numb in about 15 minutes.
I'd B damn; I could have done the same video; 2 batteries for me all well; thanks for the info; sell it to ya cheap ! Also, the head keeps falling off and it won't tighten. Since I got it at the end of summer, (over 3 month) ago; I'm stuck with it.
Home depot guy advised to get 225 echo..had 2 20v neither works..lost 200 bucks.

Mine just quit too. Only low speed. Out of warranty of course. Anyone know what the problem actually is?

It's a P.O.S. buy an Ego
Probably has grass stuck in the head
The magnet in the brushless motor is known to come apart and will make it feel like sand is in the motor until it completely dies after slowing down.
Would really help if you knew how to run a weed eater...
Maybe.
Cheap chinese magnets in the motors on these things are dying. Just happened to mine about an hour ago. I found replacement motors somewhere for about $78 which is way easier for me than dealing with warranty work that will take a month. Grass grows FAST down in the south. Need my weed eater twice a week.
+christian davis where did you find them? Mine quit on me again and I'm sure my warranty is over.
Hi Christian Davis where did you get the Replacement motors ????????????????????????????
I had the exact problem with this weed wacker. It was as if the battery was half charged. I bought it used from a shop and it didn't work from the get go. Fortunately they gave me a full refund.
+Natalie Heineman did you try dewalt it might have been under warranty they might have sent you a new one.
i got the same one no problems , dewalt warranty should be very good
Just clean it
I did, still would not run correct.
Motor gas the best
+dcsvn hen voi giac, ac voi dan I have had way more problems out of the stihl gas string trimmers. Two trips to the shop cost about the same as a new dewalt string trimmer. Also I don't trim very much if I had a lot to do then gas powered would be best.
