this live version is so different from the original one. the original one, it seems like he's singing with such tenderness and sadness. in here, he's singing like something or someone is leaving him or at least he knows they're want to leave, so he's desperate, he doesn't want want that person to leave him. it's like he isn't angry, but he's scared. it's amazing how he wrote this song talking about his alcohol addiction. and how, in fact, the alcohol is the one who is talking in this song, who tries to persuade him to drink, it tries to seduce him. elliott knows all those things are false promises, but his wrapped in a blind love towards it. the need to forget, to forget the images stuck in his head, to keep everything still. he was such a genius, the way he expressed himself through music only for himself. i miss him even though i never met him. but i like to think that he's still alive through his songs.
one of the best songs I've ever heard, it is truly a masterpiece. Pity that someone with such amazing gift died so soon, but I'm really glad that I heard this song. really beautiful.
Been listening to between the bars for like an hour now. I love all of his discography but sometimes you just gotta put this on and lie on the floor staring at nothing. Never thought to sesrch for "betwen the bars live" and click on the first result, but I'm glad I did tonight. Thanks elliott, I miss you but thanks for everything.
I've noticed a lot of commenters referencing Rick and Morty... Thanks to the writing team of Rick and Morty for adding this in, it's nice to see new fans! I saw the episode and the joke is really well done too, gg! On the other hand, I don't wanna sound like a hipster here but _I liked him bEfOrE iT wAs cOoL_
the first time I hear about Elliott Smith was in Rick and Morty.. I was sad cause it took me so long to find him and his music in my life, but also very happy I found about him after all
Elliott was usually tuned down half a step or a full step. Lower bass notes helped the songs resonate on a sadder level. Dare I say that the lower keys really know how to reach you if you’re feelin down..lol
this video is amazing!! this is one of the most beautiful songs of all time! his guitar also makes the stupid twanging noises i often get when i strum which is comforting, its nice to know people arent perfect! in an interview with madonna i read she was asked what song she wished she had written she said this one, anyone else find that strange, its beautiful i agree but not really her style
The guitar sounds really odd in this song. It is probably my favorite song. I wish I had been born when he was alive. I love him so much! Rest in peace and may we remember how he was, and how he is, for all of eternity.🎸💔😩
This seems like a sober Elliott Smith - perhaps what it would have sounded like had the road been a little different a little more often. Such a beautiful soul - such a disastrous loss
I totally agree with you, apart from the fact that he's actually an amazingly creative guitarist. I play guitar, and not too badly even if I say so myself, so I can appreciate Elliot's talent, and he had it in bucket-loads.
Drink up, baby, stay up all night With the things you could do, you won't but you might The potential you'll be that you'll never see The promises you'll only make Drink up with me now and forget all about The pressure of days, do what I say And I'll make you okay and drive them away The images stuck in your head People you've been before That you don't want around anymore They push and shove and won't bend to your will I'll keep them still Drink up, baby, look at the stars I'll kiss you again, between the bars Where I'm seeing you there, with your hands in the air Waiting to finally be caught Drink up one more time and I'll make you mine Keep you apart, deep in my heart Separate from the rest, where I like you the best And keep the things you forgot The people you've been before That you don't want around anymore They push and shove and won't bend to your will I'll keep them still
gOOD LORD!!!!!!!!! WHY IS IT THAT I AM DRAWN TO TORTURED SOULS? Because that is where art lies...between the pages of lonliness and misery. We must kill a piece of ourselves daily, sacrafice that which "matters" to most in order to FEEL. That knocks 'em out every time! TOWNES VANZANDT, BLAZE FOLEY, ELLIOT SMITH...
@cravizzle i agree, and to whoever complained about it in the first place, it's technically only rushing if the tempo unintentionally speeds up and gets inconsistent... sooo yeah. he kept a steady tempo the whole way through.
anyone happen to know what year this was recorded? possibly late '02 or early '03, his hair was longer, slurred talking, more of what he looked like before he killed himself
this is the anthem of a truly fucked up alcoholic who doesn't want to live anymore i should know I drink to feel absolutely nothing however i can't keep a dry eye anytime i hear this song sober or blacked out rip elliott you spoke to me
The name being misspelled was later clarified as a mistake by the police. The only in the coroners report that would suggest murder is that Elliott stabbed himself through his clothes, which is, apparantly, very rare
my friend went to a concert before he died and said he was crying hysterically, basically like he didn't want to be there and was singing for his 'audience' which is sad and kind of explains why he killed himself.
theres quite a few covers of this song madelein peyroux's is the best cover but of course elliotts is the most amazing one of all. great musician. absolutely amazing
you've never been on stage hellojace...you don't do it if you hate it...it's just hard to expose yourself that way he wasn't sure we'd like him, but we did alot
will I'll keep them still drink up, baby, look at the stars I'll kiss you again between the bars where I'm seeing you there with your hands in the air, waiting to finally be caught drink up one more time and I'll make you mine keep you apart deep in my heart separate from the rest where I like you the best and keep the things you forgot the people you've been before that you don't want around anymore that push and shove and won't bend to your will I'll keep them still
"They say" is a key phrase in "they say he killed himself". I'm not convinced. Jennifer Chiba is way too shady. It would have been amazing to see him.... I am still so mad I never got to.
first off it was a knife and his girlfriends fingerprints were on it she claimed she pulled it out before he fell..nobody really knows if he killed himself or not but either way he is way closer to being jesus than ull ever be
I love how he comes out and just says "What do you wanna hear?" like he has no set list or anything.
most of the time he didn't, he'd just ask what the crowd wants :)
Yeah he never did homework. Too smart for that kinda sh!t

I love you.
Very well said, friend. Cheers.
I love how the crowd goes silent once he starts playing.
one of the best songs I've ever heard, it is truly a masterpiece. Pity that someone with such amazing gift died so soon, but I'm really glad that I heard this song. really beautiful.
why wasn't i born during the time all true legends lived? this song sends goosebumps down my body.
Kalhiana yes why???
He isn’t a LEGEND😂
@@runeplate123 oh zip it
@@runeplate123 he is
You should be. He should still be alive.
Notice how the audience just shuts up. They're speechless because he's pulling them into his reality with his song...what great presence.
he sings from his heart
it's amazing
Between The Bars...possibly my all time favourite song!
And still now?

RIP brotha , true legends never die.... 10/21/2003
Eyedea and Elliott Smith. Rip! Next level emotional music.
I love how he does that...
gets on stage and asks what the crowd wants to hear... rather than just playing to a set list.
What an absolutely beautiful song.
The words are so simple but at the
same time completely brilliant.
May you live forever Elliot... Thank you for your feeling. It's quite inspiring.
insane that he can hit those notes in standard tuning
Elliott was usually tuned down half a step or a full step. Lower bass notes helped the songs resonate on a sadder level. Dare I say that the lower keys really know how to reach you if you’re feelin down..lol
Goosebumps...Elliot, RIP
i sooo love this song

one of his best songs, and he is appropriately drunk when he sings it
dude lived his music
those types are the best songwriters
I love how his voice sounds here.
amazing performance, amazing song; thanks for sharing!
i loved this
i love this song
and i love him :(
You're partly right.
The audience was also (overwhelmingly) requesting this song.
my god this is so good.
The guitar sounds really odd in this song.

This seems like a sober Elliott Smith - perhaps what it would have sounded like had the road been a little different a little more often.
Such a beautiful soul - such a disastrous loss
Beautifully performed.
Legendary
so amazing... so sad and beautiful
Beautiful.
Waltz #2. One of my favorites.
The best Song of the Life✨
¡PERFECTO!
tends to happen when you are playing live. something about the energy of the audience makes you want to play harder and faster.
wonderful song
I totally agree with you, apart from the fact that he's actually an amazingly creative guitarist. I play guitar, and not too badly even if I say so myself, so I can appreciate Elliot's talent, and he had it in bucket-loads.
beautiful
Wow I was just gonna ask the same thing. Thanks so much!
you were one of the best! rest in peace
Drink up, baby, stay up all night
With the things you could do, you won't but you might
The potential you'll be that you'll never see
The promises you'll only make
Drink up with me now and forget all about
The pressure of days, do what I say
And I'll make you okay and drive them away
The images stuck in your head
People you've been before
That you don't want around anymore
They push and shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still
Drink up, baby, look at the stars
I'll kiss you again, between the bars
Where I'm seeing you there, with your hands in the air
Waiting to finally be caught
Drink up one more time and I'll make you mine
Keep you apart, deep in my heart
Separate from the rest, where I like you the best
And keep the things you forgot
The people you've been before
That you don't want around anymore
They push and shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still
definitely agreed.
he's know for speeding up songs live all the time, its just how he would rather play at that moment!!
Elliott Smith is amazing.
Nicely put
i agree!

He is dead ):
@cravizzle i agree, and to whoever complained about it in the first place, it's technically only rushing if the tempo unintentionally speeds up and gets inconsistent... sooo yeah. he kept a steady tempo the whole way through.
You can tell he's like, fuck'n of course...but he plays it anyway.
My music all the time
I think Lennon said it best on Anthology, basically just saying that when you're live, you play everything 20 X's faster.
uber geile muziek!
Thank you.
genius any way you look at it. agreed?
any idea what who/when this was?
It's not how fast you play it, it's how you play it ;)
Anyone know what guitar he's using?
well said
its his song int it. hell just fancy doin it however he feels that day.
anyone happen to know what year this was recorded? possibly late '02 or early '03, his hair was longer, slurred talking, more of what he looked like before he killed himself
which show is this from?
I'm diggin' Taylor Eigst/Becca Steven's rendition
this is the anthem of a truly fucked up alcoholic who doesn't want to live anymore i should know I drink to feel absolutely nothing however i can't keep a dry eye anytime i hear this song sober or blacked out rip elliott you spoke to me
I agree with you in a way, specifically hes not sending a message but in my opinion, there was a reason he wrote it and that in itself is a message.
The name being misspelled was later clarified as a mistake by the police.
The only in the coroners report that would suggest murder is that Elliott stabbed himself through his clothes, which is, apparantly, very rare
i want this guitar :{
i find his lyrics more emotional and imaginary
then realistic
my friend went to a concert before he died and said he was crying hysterically, basically like he didn't want to be there and was singing for his 'audience' which is sad and kind of explains why he killed himself.
this was posted 17 years ago wtf :D
but he did say "what do you want to hear?"

I think those buzzed strings had more to do with him playing the Gibson instead of the yamaha. Idk he seemed pretty drunk too...
Agreed hes playing thr guitar in my hand in my profile pic. But I thought he usually plays a Martin? I'll have to double check
what do the lyrics mean?
