    I just bought a Gallagher 400 to replace a Stafix that I had had for a long time. The Stafix was .5 joule and of course the 400 is much less, but this is for less than 1000 feet of horse fence.
    I bought the Gallagher lightning diverter, and I had not yet looked at this video. You mentioned that you would not use this device on a fence of less than .5 joule. Should I send it back and use no lightning diverter?

      What exact model of gallagher did you buy? The only 400 models I know of have other letters in front of that, so I don't know which one you have exactly. Here are those model names and their power.
      Gallagher M400, old discontinued model from 20 years ago 2.5 joule output.
      Gallagher S400, solar unit made today 3 +/- joule output
      Gallagher MBS400, multi AC/DC powered unit still made today with 3 joule output.
      I don't know any other of their models with the 400 model name. Are you mistaken on the exact model name?

      @@judymyers9552 Oh ok, that's around 3+/- output joules and a very reliable unit. So if you want to use a gallagher lightning diverter with that unit, you can use it.

    Can you connect this to a ground rod that isn't on the fence ground? My neighbor and I share a charger. Neighbor has the charger ground grounded through the outlet box. There are no ground rods connected to the charger.

    • @FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity
      @FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity  Před 3 lety

      Most manufactures would recommend that you don't ground the charger through the buildings ground and to have it's own separate ground system at least 35' away from any other ground system. But if it's working at the moment, I guess keep it that way.
      On a separate ground rod for the lightning diverter, it might work that way. Because ground is common to everything, so it might work. I just don't know with your unit being connected to the outlet box's ground.

      @@FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity he says he has done it that way since he was a kid and never had any ground issues. I know it's not the correct way to do it but I know nothing about electric. What are the problems with grounding it that way? Just curious as it is his charger but it is in my building/electric. I tried to find info on Google as to why it is not recommended but my search came up blank. Just want to make sure it's not hazardous having it that way.

    How do you figure out how many ground rods you should have? How far apart should they be?

    • @FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity
      @FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity  Před 3 lety

      Most manufacturer have the information in their manuals on what they recommend. Spacing is always the same, 10' a part between each ground rod. On the amount that you need, a rule of thumb is 1 rod per 2 joules, But, that's not always the case. It also depends on how rocky, dry, and sandy your soil is because everywhere is not the same. So that's why most manufacturers recommend 3 ground rods minimum to help compensate for dry or other bad ground situations. The larger the joule unit is, the more ground rods you will need.
