A “witch” was most likely the person in the village who had the best knowledge of herbs and plants etc., and they were respected by people in their community for their ability to heal minor injuries (and probably save lives by stopping infection). The day they made a mistake or were simply unable to save someone - ie. from cancer (which we still can’t always cure people from) - they were persecuted. All the rights they did over the years would be disregarded and they would be reported.
A lot of the herbs they used back then, we still use today. It’s so sad that things we keep in the cupboard now could’ve got us killed back then.

Fun fact: during these times there were more witch hunting books than educational books.
Other fun fact: one 81 year old man named Giles Corey was accused of witchcraft and sentenced to peine forte et dure, being slowly crushed under rocks. He never confirmed or denied anything. In fact he stayed mute and simply accepted his fate.

      Agreed.
However the West did take it to new levels.
Think about the narrative we were taught as children, with regards to Christendom and Western Civilization's relation to the non-Christian non-European world. I'm from the first batch of what is known as the "Born-Frees" of South Africa. Those born from '94 onwards. We were literally taught, as kids, that Christians came to spread the gospel, to civilize the uncivilized, to educate the uneducated.
Even in America, people are fed the narrative that "slaves" were brought to the Americas, and educated, civilized, etc. This is evident by the attitudes African Americans show towards Africans, just take a look at black comedy through the decades. Why is that none of them heard the name _"Omar Ibn Said"_ before? Think about it.
A mere 30-years ago, the conservative Christian Apartheid regime (who the US fully backed) was setting dogs loose on innocent men, women, and children. A mere 30-years ago, my parents were viewed as less-than-human, inferior subhuman beings. How can that be? Why weren't we taught about _"Sheikh Yusuf of Macassar", "Tuan Guru of Robben Island",_ and countless other well-learned, revered personalities who were recognized as such, even by those who enslaved them.
Do you get see where I'm coming from?
Christendom and Western Civilization unlike most other major empires, set out to destroy peoples, cultures, communities, families... deliberately denying others even basic dignity and recognition.. going as far as to even denying knowing that what they propagate to this day, are are sinister, self-serving sentiments and suggestives.
