  • I review the winner of the 1968 'Best Picture' Oscar, IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, which stars Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger, who also won an Academy Award for his performance here. The film sees Poitier playing a man who is arrested for murder, in a small southern American town, simply because he is black. But when the racist police force learn that he is a big city police detective, who specializes in homicide cases, they are forced to work together with him to solve the case. Sparks fly in this classic movie that deals with the racial tensions of the time. In the Heat of the Night is directed by Norman Jewison, who would go on to direct The Hurricane many years later.

Cracking line, mostly because of Poitier's delivery.

It's been a long time since I've seen this, but hearing you talk about it brought back a good bit. I remember feeling the same way you did about the gum chewing haha. And the fact that it was a slower film but a good watch. I may have to give it a revisit one of these days. Good stuff Bryan

Thanks Jack. It's a great film about racial tensions. It doesn't dilute things, which I feel more modern films about the same subject can have a tendency to do, for the sake of reaching a wider audience.

the whole point of the film is overcoming prejudice, Stiger is greatful for the help & a changed man , realising now that racism should'nt be allowed to get in the way of justice, plus he knew he never would have solved the case himself the sense of a new optimism for the future was the best way to end the film i thought

What's amazing is the acting jobs by everyone, including the most minor of characters.

All the actors do a sterling job in this most important film, it even deals with sexism, and lee grant being a woman and a foreigner herself from north America as Sidney is. gets patronised & humoured
i love the scene as a very strong woman, she makes it clear she DOESNT want Virgil tibbs taken off the case or she'll pull her husbands team & business investment out of the hick Town. Lee grant is superb in this, and i always laugh to think that having been accused of murder they then beg Virgil to stay & solve the case that's beyond the bigoted Sheriff, making all the wrong arrests as he feels the political pressure. have you seen Missisippe Burning?

As Bryan said, one viewing is not enough--increases in value upon each subsequent view. I didn't like it, in particular, the first time, but was drawn to give it another chance, not unlike The Caine Mutiny or To Sir with Love or Outlaw Josey Wales. Some movies, it takes a little time to let them sink in, and this is one of them. Don't give up on it.

All the music is by Quincey Jones EXCEPT the theme song “In The Heat of The Night” by Ray Charles! I think you forgot to mention that bit ^^

Quincy Jones put it together, but used various artists. Fowl Owl on the Prowl was by the Little Willies.
