  • This is an 8-minute "Slice" or variation from Lesson 4 of our new women's self-defense program, Women Empowered 2.0. The complete lesson is 62 minutes long and there are 20 lessons in total!
For the first time ever, you can get certified to teach the Women Empowered program anywhere in the world! In the past, in order for someone to be considered for instructor certification in the Women Empowered program, they had to own or operate a professional martial arts school. We have since realized that in order for this program to reach women everywhere, we had to eliminate this entry barrier. Women Empowered 2.0 was designed from the ground up with this objective in mind, such that any person who successfully completes the curriculum and achieves a score of 95 or higher on the Pink Belt Test will be invited to participate in the Women Empowered Instructor Certification Program (WE ICP). Those who graduate from the WE ICP will be certified and authorized to teach Women Empowered anywhere in the world, for profit or not! Our goal is to have certified instructors in every city around the world so that Women Empowered is being offered in every fitness studio, college campus, church, military base and beyond. There are women all over the world haven't yet found jiu-jitsu, and with your help, jiu-jitsu will find them!

When I was attacked by a man I did not allow him to know my strength. I knew he would overcome me at my strongest point, so I became quite limp, this reduced the pressure he placed on my arms with his grip so they did not hurt as much. He became concentrated on his next move and at that point I struck and wriggled my arms free, pulled hair and punched as hard as I could. I started yelling and he kicked me very hard in the shin and I nearly collapsed and he thought he had me but at that point I smashed him very hard in the nose. I was lucky because at this point some men arrived and helped me. I don't like fighting at all, I am not a fighter but I was not going to allow him to do what he wanted. These techniques are useful to know, also that you can fight people stronger if you keep calm and if you believe in yourself.

I’m always suspicious of these self defense techniques. Most of them don’t work without a lot of cooperation. I was hopeful yet skeptical about this. I was willing to give out a shot because of the Gracie name. I showed this video to my 14 year old daughter then had her try it against me. I am 6’4” and about 250 pounds. After a single view of the video she was able to break free from my grasp easily. I was NOT being cooperative. I was holding hard and trying to not let go. I am 120 pounds, 5’1’’ tall, 16 year old girl and I did this move against an about 6 foot tall, 150 pound coach and did the move easily. I didn’t believe him at first because I thought he was helping me since it seemed too easy but he called another guy from the class about the same height and weight and I did it on him and I knew he was not helping me and I still got out. Yeah whats also horrible is that its hard even if if they arent strong (yes there are instances where ppl weaker than you assault you yet its hard to do stuff abt it) but they are your close aquaintainces/friends which causes ppl to be shocked and freeze since it was unexpected and hesitate because its easier to hit a random creep than a loved one/friend thats a creep (thats why interpersonal relationship violence is so scary).
Or pulling this in public in front of aquaintainces in a way thats not visible to them but known to victim only subtly because even tho its said to scream etc most ppl are too embarassed to say a thing till it escalates especially if ppl surrounding you/your society seems like/is full of victim blamers/shamers than helpful and its not even a matter of strength any more, which is why even men are vulnerable to sexual assaults.
And thats why its not a physical/sexual violation alone but also a violation of trust, psychological + verbal, reputational and emotional violation and makes it hard to trust any one that touches you and sometimes even talks to you.
And may be one of the rare ways to recover that trust is to meet as many good people as we can and find healthier relationships even if our trust might have been broken by people we trusted. But also learn psychological+verbal+textual+emotional+ physical defense (not just one), understand your own and criminals psychology and use the information and awareness to your advantage. And there are myriads of resources online to learn from.
And if all else including online self help fails you can always ask for help from a therapist. And believe you will get through this, not right away but as you learn, change psychologically/physically and in time emotional wounds may reduce.

If you only do it once or twice it’s not going to work, you have to practice a lot so it’s like second nature to you, so that it becomes a reflex because in a stressful situation you probably won’t remember to do this. I mean most people would just scream and flail around. If you’re panicking you can’t pull it off so you have to stay calm. I was raised in a martial arts oriented family with 2 brothers who had 2nd and 3rd degree black belts. Besides their coaching, I belonged to a dojo and trained in martial arts for 4 years before having to stop when I became pregnant with my first child. I lived and breathed karate my entire life, and won many awards & trophies in both sparring and Kata, at tournaments (besides getting my butt kicked on a regular basis by my brothers. Lol).
Fast forward 10 years and I was unfortunately married to what turned out to be a very abusive man. He exploded one day, locked me in a bedroom and sucker-punched me across the face. I tried to fight back, but NONE of the martial arts techniques I was taught over the years worked. None of them.
He had me on the floor in the position described in this video. I couldn't move or try the technique suggested, simply because he had his weight shifted back and was basically "sitting" down on my hips. I was powerless.
When someone is a lot stronger than you are, and they surprise you with the first hit (which can be really disorienting and painful), sometimes all that training just doesn't work. At least it didn't for me.
It's been years since I left him (I had to pack up and leave in one day while he was out of town for business). I took basically the clothes on my back my dog. I'm still afraid to be in another relationship.

To me, when someone (usually a man attacking a woman) attacks another I no longer view them as a man or woman, but of dark energy.
Unfortunately, most women are sheltered by loved ones and are not taught how to confront this dark energy through self defense. Remember everyone, by not teaching women in your life how to protect herself you are only enabling the dark energy. No fear...do not live in fear. Learn techniques and how to use and utilize the necessary tools to take care of yourself.

As my martial arts instructor once told me ..''if you don't shoot you're always gonna miss'' I'd rather try and fail than just lay there and let someone choke me out or knock me out. Love the Gracie self defence tutorials, my instructor swears by them and I've tried them and they work. We do stress tests in our class, where we see what works against someone really trying to pin us or choke us and these moves are great. If you can't free yourself in under six seconds then you really need to look at a different move to suite you and physical capabilities.....

Putting up a fight, getting in any “dirty” moves that really hurt, screaming, and falling back on simple but effective reflexive positions to protect your neck, head, and vital organs can all tilt the odds in favor of surviving/stopping the assault. It’s similar to wearing a seatbelt AND having air bags, AND having a car with a crumple zone. The more layers if protection you have, the better.

Assuming a rapist would put you in no pain is idiocy, suppose he started twisting her wrists almost to the breaking point would she still be able to get out? Before you say yes you must acknowledge that pain can easily send the person in pain into a state of panic. When you start to panic you stop thinking. In this situation during a state of panic the brain would most likely resort to trying to free the arms. The only way that this would truly work is if they were trained is some form of combat which most people are not.
I believe you would be better off biting the shit out of his arm. He can’t use both of his hands to pin your wrists and immobilize your head at the same time. Then when he releases your wrist go for his eyes or dick most likely the dick as it is easily injured with one hand.

Wrestling with brother 9 years older than me as a child [if pinned on this position I got the spit dribble and retract treatment] so I developed a very effective counter.
Bring your leg up and kick them in the back of the head repeatedly. Just the side on your foot can still be effective if you're wearing footwear, or you just keep hammering again and again.
And if you're really flexible, you can get the side of the face or loop your foot around so you can get it in front of their neck or face and start levering.
And if they're down to low on your body to reach your leg up, just keep kneeing their ass, and you might get lucky and be able to get your leg between theirs and either lever them off or go for the crotch.
Being 7 vs a 16 year old, I was a lot smaller, you can bring your legs into play and just use their power while their hands are effectively neutralized since they are committed to pinning you.
BTW I'm now bigger than my brother 😉.

i did a self defense class back when i was in shape. they taught all sorts of breaks and stuff. they paired me off with someone close to my size and did so with everyone else.
then a pair of girls next to us asked me to try and pin them. because i was by far the biggest person there.
i put them in a hold and they break out.
they then asked me to do full force. it did not work out at all. even the instructor couldn't break out using the techniques.
so if in trouble and the technique doesn't work try not to panic and try to find a fleshy bit you can jam a finger, a foot into to cause them to loosen their grip a little and go from there. and if you break free, hit a joint or soft spot then leg it.. hit and git. dont look back dont slow down till you are in safety.

a fighting heart can be silenced with enough demoralization.
A Better idea is for women to learn (not self defense) but... HOW TO DEFEND YOURSELF and how to kick to the shit out of anyone who touches them
(you want girl power, YOU NEED TO USE POWER) (as well as BE A GIRL)
I know women that are very effective at protecting themselves
i also know woman that make excuses for not having to learn how to defend themselves
i suppose it comes down to the woman,
but hey.. if we're going to discuss what does a woman do in these situations,
you really can't rely on help from others around you or police (if you get it.. Great, but don't rely on it)
you need to rely on yourself, like everything else in life

Fair enough although consider a few things (Now.. I've been married for 20 years LOL, ok and in those 20 glorious years :P i have learned a few things about women and myself, one of those is that WE DO NOT THINK ALIKE.
So here is the part where i tell you that is isn't logical and it'll likely be the part where you tell me that it is :P)
      1. You said "To Everyone in the comments "
in my interpretation, when i combine that with the context of the video, it's not really saying "Only to the people who have already been traumatized"
      2. it's good that you're not telling them that the way to defend themselves is to realize they are strong...
Because i've done martial arts since i was 8 and i'm now 49 and i know that approach doesn't work.
i also don't like guys that rape women and if i was there i'd kick the shit out of him within an inch of his life and then when he was helpless i'd led the girl who he put on the ground kick the shit out of him for as long as he saw fit.
so yeah , i don't like guys that bash girls
and i know this approach doesn't work
and this video, Honestly (no offense to the creators) is bloody useless
      3. This video gives the impression that what they are doing REALLY WORKS,
IT DOESN'T and it will be a rude shock for anyone who thinks it will
      4. i remember back in the 70s when we used to say
They can do something to our bodies or hurt us but they can't touch our spirit or our heart
well... you give it 30 odd years and you start to understand that you can actually can break a person physically and emotionally and spiritually and in anyway that matters IF YOU KNOW HOW
Being strong physically and mentally is important, but it's a question of how strong you are
you can get to a point where nothing affects you (i have personally done this) it's not easy, and it takes a lot of practice (maybe 3 years) but it can be done
My advice to those who have gone through this
Your advice was to be strong and it was more emotional
(i suppose since you are appealing to a female audience largely, you are more qualified to make the call)
My advice however (if your advice didn't resonate with them) would be....
Understand that life is a sequence of events
Understand that you can only control what you can control and the things that you can't control you should not worry about because it only makes it worse
When life does shit things to you you need to be accepting of those things and move forward
Also... i'm not talking out of my arse either
      I've never been raped, but
      - I have had serious illness and i still have it and will always have it
      - I have literally had half my face burned off TO THE BONE
then had to spend (as a child) 2 years in a completely dark room in a children's hospital (now, you can't tell me that doesn't psychologically affect a person)
      - and a tonne of other stuff as well
      - Just recently .. My father passed away
      Life is like this
      it's a sequence of events
YOU NEED TO LEARN TO DEAL WITH DIFFERENT EVENTS IN LIFE
so that you don't break down
Quick side story about feeling helpless
a few decades ago, my mum comes home and tells me she was on a train
and a young bloke (at a train station in a very violent neighbourhood) stole her bag and threatened her with a knife
I was young, i was angry at this and felt helpless since i was well trained and if i was with my mum he'd have been on the wrong side of the scenario.
      but i couldn't help her,
She described the guy to me
i didn't know him off the bat
then ... 2 weeks later approx
i'm on a train (it's the same station) and he's done the same thing to this 80 year old lady (what a piece of shit!) i thought to myself
he was like 5 train seats down from me
i got up and got his attention (with the intent for him to point the knife away from the old lady and point it towards me as i knew absolutely what i would do )
He did point it at me
(The seat opposite the lady was empty)
i broke his arm, threw him into the seat
and as his hands went down onto the seat to break his fall (and becauase i realized this was the same guy that did it to my mum)
i took his knife from him and inserted it into the back of his hand so it came out the other side and pinned his hand to the seat
I left him pinned to the seat and... Basically to figure out how the fuck he would now remove the knife from his own hand
in my mind... FUCK HIM !!!
he picks on old ladies for money
i went to the comfort the old lady
at the next station i told the guy to fuck off and get off the train, He did (with the knife still in his hand)
      again... FUCK HIM
i have no regrets at all of this, but what happened to my mum could have been worse (thankfully it wasn't)
My advice to all women who have gone through this (just like i told the old lady)
If your'e ok now, then IT'S OK
Plan for these things in the future
Learn to accept life and do not hold onto this stuff
The statistical probability of a guy doing this stuff to a women is very low in reality
      BUT IT DOES HAPPEN
      Be Prepared
Do not watch Mickey Mouse you tube video's that fill you with false hope, because you'll get hurt again
Go to a professional martial arts school
      and train seriously
if you train hard enough you'll find that people just won't attack you anymore (Because it's obvious that you can defend yourself)
      that would be my advice
but hey, i'm a guy, maybe you can relate to them better
