  • Oil pressure keeps going up and down. Not sure if screen is clogged in oil pan or oil pressure switch is bad. If any one had this problem please let me know what you did to fix it thank you. #dodges #dodgeRam #oilpressure (UPDATE .. ended up replacing motor. The oil pan was full of sludge and chunks kept breaking off and blocking the screen on oil pump.

    Oil pressure sensor next to the oil filter. Mech told me when they go bad.....they either stand straight up or lay flat. Plan to replace that sensor AND change the oil/filter tomorrow. Hopefully the same easy fix works for you. Bought my 2003 today.

    I have a Dodge Dakota 4.7 V8 had check gauges light and oil pressure would go down making it scary. It turned out being the oil pressure switch 13$ item. Easy to change on my dodge, most dodges have the pressure switch right around the oil filter. Start with the cheapest and easiest job.

    I know this is 3 years old but was probably oil pressure sensor or low oil. Also occasionally, it can actually be the cluster itself. My ex girlfriend had an 06 ram and the tachometer was going all over at idle. Would literally range from 600rpm down to literally a sliver above 0. Like 20rpm on the tach. No change in engine smoothness or sound. Ended up being a bad cluster at only about 75k miles.

    Make sure you have the right oil filter. I had the same issue. Started with a royal purple but ended up with the Mopar 899 oik filter since it has a larger diameter it helped with oil flow

    Your oil pressure switch is bad. But that only gives you a pressure reading. It doesnt affect the motor operation if the guage is malfunctioning. Any engine noise you hear has nothing to do with the malfunctioning switch

    I have a 2003 Dodge Ram 5.9L Pickup and the gauge does the same thing. I have had the system flushed, oil pan removed and cleaned, changed oil pump, sensor. I am still getting the up and down when I idle, but as long as I'm "driving", it seems to be okay. A friend said if I had the "sending unit" replaced. He said that this unit sends "mechanically read" info to the oil electrical sensor. I had taken it to a Dodge dealer before this info, to get it fixed, they said I "needed" a new motor. I don't hear any noises in the engine, even when the gauge is going nuts. I guess I need to get a good shop to try this. AAAHHHH!!!!

    Mine doing same thing after a complete upper end rebuild. But mines not making any type of noise when it drops. Goes up and stays when your pressing on accelerator. Just found out it's main bearing issues and motor has A,B, or C crank bearings. Motor doesn't have a standard size bearing. Ring gear area on crank gives what bearing goes in each journal.

    • @fierceeagle2003
      @fierceeagle2003  Před 8 měsíci

      Heavy sludge build up in the motor. 4.7's are known for major sludge build up if proper maintenance is not done. Person before me didn't do oil changes and used regular oil instead of full synthetic. Unfortunately for me I lost oil pressure and the motor was completely sludged. Hope that helps.

  • @dannychildree346
    @dannychildree346 Před 5 lety +4

    Lucas is too thick. It is putting too much pressure on those bearings. Those engines are machined so tight that it leaves no room for error. I lost an 04 ram 5.7 for that same reason. Maybe I am wrong but I'm just saying from experience. I've never had trouble with my 03 but I use penzoil platinum 5/30.

    Right behind the throttle body. Hard to get to. If it had no oil pressure it would lock up very quickly. Have the same truck and I drove it like that for months knowing it was just the sending unit aka oil pressure switch

  • @chrisricks6736
    @chrisricks6736 Před 4 lety +7

    you said it was a clogged oil pan? Never heard of it. An oil pan is the container that holds the oil. It may get sludge but it cannot be clogged. Perhaps your pickup tube picked up some sludge? I stumbled on your video because i'm having the same issue, minus the noise. I recently changed the oil and used lucas stabilizer for the first time, due to using slightly thinner synthetic oil. Seems fine under throttle however at a stop light, the pressure will drop and throw the check engine warning. I'm thinking it's the pressure sensor on mine. I'll change it today and see if it solves the issue.
