    I think creatures should be able to "feel" what's directly underneath them without having to use their eye... Basically their body acts like a secondary sensory organ. That way they could utilize their eye for looking around them more

      Yes! It doesn't make alot of sense for a ceature to see what's going on a couple meters in front of it and not directly underneath them. Sensory detection is a must.

      exactly... if you think about it, nearly half of your senses are contact senses (touch, taste, heat/cold, pain) and second half are ranged senses (sight, hearing, smell and partially heat/cold detection). More primitive the creature, bigger preference for the contact senses).

    One thing that might be an interesting feature would be automatic temperature variances, so some winters would be mild, others especially harsh, etc.

    I suggest a camouflage effect where creatures on a color they almost match, fighting is less effective on the creature.
    Also, on fertile soil, certain plants should grow. There should be a few kinds of plants, plants should give extra food, and different species should evolve to get more mass from a certain plant, or from soil fertilized through fighting or dying creatures. (Which should be a separate type of fertilization in my opinion) by adding new food sources (maybe a water-based food source and aquatic creatures too), biodiversity should hopefully skyrocket.

      That might be something that happens naturally if the creatures evolve to look in front of themselves. If a creatures color matches a terrain type they would be less likely to be attacked.

      Nah, that would 1. take up too much computer power (as far as I know) so you couldn't simulate as many years anymore, and also that would take away the simpleness of the game to a point where it's pretty confusing to look at

      Adding carnivores, that naturally would not eat plants, but gain power by successfull kill, would naturally fix problem of creatures not willing to watch enviroment. With that, creatures would also have to learn path finding to avoid areas, where they would be cornered or slowed, while they are being chased, and/or find a way to protect themselves (poisonous meat anyone?), and after that, predators would have to have some kind of priorities which spieces they like to attack more, and which are not worth chasing.

    If you introduced predation or rapidly fatal tiles they would need to expand their vision in order to avoid them. While the predators would need vision to hunt effectively.

      Or not a "one point 'eye' " but something more like an actual eye, where the creature sees the first thing that crosses a certain field of view (I would suggest three lines for that in the simulator to keep it simple). So if the next creature (or stone) is one meter away in the direction that this "vision line" faces, is blue then it gives a certain input based on its colour.
      Also, to imitate the blurriness that comes in the real world when you look at stuff hundreds of meters away, he could automatically multiply that input by the sigmoid funcition times the distance, so the further things are away, the less certain the creature can be of its colour.

    cary you should make it so that if 3-4 rocks are on the same tile then it should become a land tile and there should be flooding so that the land changes and maybe add earthquakes to generate more rocks to restart the rock circle

    if the probability of two 'cells' mating was inversely proportional to the distance between the two genomes, speciation events might occur, instead of one global cell population. That might also help with the overpopulation problem.

      Good idea, although if the outcome is a baby whose neural network is the middle between both parents, if these parents' neural networks worked completely differnent, the baby would die soon anyway.
      The only thing that is necessary for evolution to evolve creautures who are less likely to mate differet species, is that creatures can know what colour (basically representative of the species) the other creature is. I solved that problem by replacing the single "vision point" with a "vision line", which gives the creature the colour of the next object (stone or creature) that is in that line. Also I would add a sigmoid function proportional to the distance that this object is to the creature, so that the further away it is, the "blurrier" the "picture" gets for the creature and the less certain the colour is. I would actually want 3 of these vision lines, to create something like a field of view
      For the ground sensing, I would just add one indicator that ONLY senses the colour of the ground, and also 3 others whose distance the creature can vary, which work just like the vision points that are already in place.
      BTW I also wrote a lot more (I think very good) ideas in the comment I wrote 1 hour ago, but I don't want to copy n paste everything here

      Gabriel Ferraro I wasn't saying he said that, I was making an example of the accent. And it's not the effeminate that's wrong, it's the obnoxious voice that rubs me the wrong way. Also, who said I was offended? It's just annoying. I'm not telling him to stop, just that, personally, I dislike it. Is that so wrong? It's not him I dislike, only his voice. No matter his reason for talking like that, it just feels like he is going "HEY! I'M GAY! HEAR HOW GAY I AM! COOL, HUH?" Even if that isn't the case.
      But eh, I can't help how he sounds and I can't help how I think. So I just tried to ignore it. It's hard, but I was able to block out the accent to watch the videos.

    You should add a specialization trait to the guys. So they could specialize in hunting down other guys making that more energy efficient but they have a increased cost to eat grass. Then you would end up with predator and producer species instead of one homogeneous species that acts one way.

    I love your recordings, I am not most likely the first and the only one to see that the movement throughout all the generations process is to go clock wise, even though some variations of it occur.     Awesome vid, can't wait for the next one. For the rocks, you could have them be more difficult to move in water for the creatures, as well as drift to the nearest land (or rather white land, to avoid build up on coast) (speed of drift determined by size of rock). Perhaps also, give them a sink time value, for sinking as you mentioned (which could also influence drift speed), so that when in water, sink_time += size/some_const (sinks faster when larger), and if sink_time > size then destroy the rock (visible size = size - sink_time). Along with this, you could randomly generate rocks on land (you may want to restrict the amount of rocks that exist). I wonder if ever rocks would be used by creatures tactically for some purpose, that would be cool.

    Dam man, the skill it must take to make something this complex. I'm not a programmer but to make a functioning brain (however simple) is extremely difficult no matter how u do it

      If you created the creature itself, yes, you would need extremely much trial n error. But luckily that's just what evolution is doing, so what Carykh did is "just" typing in useful information that evolutoin can use

    There are some ideas:
    Inputs:
    3 eyes (2 in front 1 in back) with Red,Green,Blue,Proximity sensor in every eye
    sound sensor (responds to amount of other agents around this agent)
    smell sensor (responds to amount of movement around this agent)
    food sensor (how much food is at the feet of this agent?)
    health sensor (how healthy is this agent?)
    clock sensors (2, fluctuate in activity over time in different frequencies)
    hearing sensor (used to listen to other agents' shouting)
    blood sensor (a bot can judge health of the bot ahead of it)
    Outputs:
    amount of Red,Green,Blue to emit
    boost (used to travel much faster, but at a cost of a lot of food)
    sound multiplier: bots can be very noisy, or very silent and sneaky through this.
    give actuator: when turned on, this bot is willing to share its health with others

    How about you add a rule that creatures always have to spend energy to get their body temperature to 1deg? This way in winter they will probably move less and use the fat they saved from summer to survive. Without that rule they will just kinda run in
    constant circles which is boring. BTW since accelerating also causes them to lose energy by unwantedly increasing their body temperature, that could also mean they move MORE in winter but that's just speculation
    And here's the even more fun part: In real life, every warm object emmits heat radiation, so how about you also add that, so that if another creature is close to another one (like 50% of lost heat/radius^2), both are able to survive much more easily, which will likely cause tribes to rise up.
    Thinking about tribes (and after reading The Selfish Gene) I figured it would be absolutely necessary to give the creatures some sense of how closely related another creature is related to them. As far as I know, this can be done by measuring the difference in the skin colour between a different creature and its own one.
    And here's how I want to do that: You give the creature not one "vision point" (you also don't just "see" what is at one single point one meter below and two meters ahead of you, you see what's closest in front of you) with a certain radius which they can see, but an entire line, so that their input gives them the colour of the closest object in that direction. To give them the opportunity for some kind of field of vew, you couls give them not one such line, but 3 of them, and mutations control how those are arranged. These three lines would be a normal input, BUT the further the closest object is away, the less certain the input is (sigmoid function). Of course the creatures would also have to know how far away the object in this vision line is, so that should be another input.
    Of course it would be incredibly confusing to have like 1500 lines of vision on the map, so you could maybe make it so that these lines blurr away after a few meters or even less.
    Those 3 lines were for stones and other creatues, but of course they als need vision of the ground, so I think they should get one input of the ground directly below them (they're gonna want that anyway) and another 3 that they can place as single points - of the kind that you have the vision input right now- so they can also see the ground.
    Also if the creatures can see who'se related how closely, you might even see some "altruism" (The Selfish Gene explains that perfectly, but for that to happen it definetly needs to see whose related)
    Another feature I would really like to see is communication. How about you let creatures emmit signals - which are simply one or two nodes that every other creature inside a certain radius gets as an input in its own brain; one frame delay of course. This signal is simply a number - which can be taken directly from another node or as a combination of different nodes.
    This communication could for example enable group "hunting" (I so wanna see that) or much more efficient "farming" , because creatures can indicate how much food is left where they have just been.
    Also you could make it so that the temperature changes slower the closer the tile is to water (just as in real life)
    And I'm not sure if this is already in place, but do "heavy" creatures move slower (through both more friction and more energy going into acceleration) than light creatures?
    BTW, did you give the creatures a sensor input of when they are being attacked? That would be extremely important
    All these features that I mentioned here would probably be able to lead to very complex behaviours, but I am worried that it might not be able to happen, when the neural network mostly only consists of the input nodes. How about you add some more in between? I mean otherwise the creatures' behaviour will never get more complex than single circles going after food and in case it finds a creature of another race it kills that or something. But not much more than that, only with additional neurons tribes could possibly evolve, I think
    I guess that just was enough ideas for an entire weeks of programming :D

    This is very cool! I think you could help them with there ability to see by giving them maybe four "eyes" that are in fixed locations. One looking where they are, one that is one block ahead and one on each side. They can still evolve sight as they need to develop the NN to use the information.

    Hello! I love your simulator! it has so much potential!
    One thing you could add is a long view and a short view. we humans don't see only our feet nor only 100 meters away.
    this will help the creatures avoid oceans and more actively seek food.

    Have you considered putting food source in the ocean? I think it would be interesting to see if certain creatures evolve to take on the high risk high reward.

    Being able to see where you are is a pretty big advantage. Maybe if you made one "vision source" that was always directly under a creature and one that could move, they would develop external senses more. (And even a blind creature knows if it's walking on grass, rocks, or water.)

    My theory for the flashing colours to indicate birth: The creatures had evolved to form an axon between the Colo(u)r input nodes and the birth output nodes. So, they have to modify the colour value in order to get their preferred birth value and then flash in order to stabilise it.
    Colour(52) -----> Birth(-345)
    Cycle goes to
    Colour(61) -----> Birth(122)
    Flash to stabilise and find 1

    Perhaps adding hazards throughout the world will encourage vision. If the creatures can't see the hazards, they won't be able to avoid them.

    Have you thought about simulating seasons, and their effect on how much 'food' can be gotten from the environment? Especially if the seasons are in opposite cycles on the northern and southern halves of the world.
