HTTYD is actually pretty accurate here. Stoick was a viking. Vikings were burnt on these ships, that was their funeral for different reasons: some believed, that the dead would cross with the ship into the afterlive, some other believed that this way would prevent the undeads of coming back.

Watch the scene again, and there's another heartwarming blink and you'll miss it moment:
After Hiccup lets his arrow fly, all of the others are looking to ASTRID for direction, and only release their arrows after she does. It's a subtle but powerful way to show the cast acknowledging that, without his father, ASTRID is the one closest to hiccup and is his second in command. Not Gobber, not Valka, not Snotlout.

The whole instance feels a lot like the Lion King. Disney was praised for facing death head on with a loved character in that movie, and DreamWorks was praised for this scene.
The key in both is that, unlike many characters that are killed off in the prologue, The Lion King and HTTYD allowed us to get to know the characters and love them before they died, making the scenes all the more impactful.

This scene is why How to Train Your Dragon 2 is my favorite movie of all time. People say it is the worst of the three, but the choices that were made in the movie were the choices that made the 3rd movie great. This movie has the most charter development we see in Hiccup. Stoick's death caused Hiccup to become the leader he was born to be. Kind, but stern, humble yet curious, awkward yet eager, loving but determined, a chief and yet a friend. Aye, this is the kind of person I would follow to the edges of the earth. The likes of which would make the great Ragnar Lothbrok proud A true son of the old ways. A true son of the North. This scene is really sad but I also think it adds a realistic effect to the film that Disney is rarely "man" enough to approach- the fact that real life doesn't have the fairy tale resurrection of the loved, lost character. Full respect to Disney, but DreamWorks scored higher with HTTYD than 90% of Disney movies. A beautiful trilogy

Stoick’s Death in How to Train your Dragon 2 is still the saddest death in any animated film/show for me personally, because I became so emotional invested in his character over the years. I saw the first movie and all of the Dragons: Riders of Berk episodes and watched his character progress from hating dragons to having one of his own. Then I saw the second movie 4 years later and watched him reunite with his wife after he thought he had lost her forever. He was so happy that his family was finally back together again, then moments later he died trying to protect what he had just gotten back. And on top of that Drago forced Toothless to kill him, and Stoick had accepted Toothless into his family and the last thing he saw was him jumping in front of a blast protecting his only son from dying to his best friend… That broke me. He was a great man, a warrior, a chieftain, a father, a friend.

I swear, had I not watched the Dragons tv show, this would not have hurt as much. Through the show you really saw Stoick's development as he embraced being a Dragon rider and his further development as Hiccup's father. When he said goodbye to Thornado, I cried. So, when this happened, me, my dad, and my mom all balled our eyes out. I don't care what people say, the shows are canon in my book that further develops not just Stoick, but all the background characters that makes the movies better because you know these characters inside and out.

I don't understand how they can't be canon. 5 years passed between the 2 movies so a lot can happen in the meantime. Maybe it's just because of the cruddy animation.

This movie had me bawling my eyes out, since it was very much a part of my childhood. All my life I’ve been that kid who was obsessed with dragons, and seeing Hiccup struggle and struggle and finally succeed in getting even the most devout Dragonslayer to love them too was just beautiful.
When Stoic died I had this grim acceptance of: “This is what needs to be done for Hiccup to move forwards.”
But then I heard Gobber’s speech and saw the boat to Valhalla and it was just waterfalls for me.

These films are incredibly personal and important to me, so I went into this very guarded, very much of the mindset "you better not screw around man, this isn't something I will tolerate" and you knocked it out of the freaking park.
