The loss of his father is what made hiccup the character we love and we wish we could be. Firm, yet humble, strong, yet friendly, honest, yet steadfast. Everyone hates stoick’s death. I do too. But there’s just something so poetic about how much it impacts Hiccup. Good and bad. This entire scene is both heartbreaking and one of my favourites. (Hear me out, that’s not what I meant) the change that hiccup has is amazing, and it’s so compelling to finally see him become the chief, a responsibility he’s been afraid to have but accepted. It hurts yes, but stoick didn’t die for nothing. This movie may be the darkest of the series, but I think the most heaviest. Actions have consequences. It’s apart of life. But your mistakes don’t define us. what defines us is how we learn from them.
Stoic's death and funeral scene is one of my favourite scenes in animation. You can see all the raw emotion and devastation that Hiccup feels on his face. It's a death that affects both his son and the members of his community and I love what the animators did here. They did a great job. That sort of raw emotion and devastation is barely seen in the Lion King animation (though you do feel the pain and grief of Mufasa's loss on Simba).

Hiccup didn't want to become chief because, in his own words, how could he possibly fill the shoes of someone nicknamed "The Vast?" Well, he couldn't. No one could. You see, Hiccup, after all this time, *still* didn't truly understand: he didn't have to be his father. He couldn't be. The only way for him to be chief, was to be himself. He just didn't realize that he could do it. Until he had to.
