Sailor King of Pen: Fountain Pen Royalty?

  • I resisted even trying a King of Pen for years. They're big, they're expensive, and so I just avoided them. Until I didn't. That big orange pen just called to me, and darn it if they aren't some of the best nibs I've ever used. So, what's all the hype about with this pen? Does it pay off? Are they worth getting? Watch and see!

I have a King of Pen. It is from the second year of its release. It has an ebonite body. The nib is outstanding. I didn't expect any give to the nib and was not surprised. But the smoothness of the nib is a joy. Ityt is one that will never leave my collection.

I have heard that due to the nib being very soft the tines spread too much under normal pressure writing, causing the nib to skip in fine and extra fine widths when Sailor tested making KOP nibs in fine and extra fine. I find this a little odd as Montblanc 149s and Pelikan M1000s both offer extra fine nibs which you would think would be comparable to a KOP fine nib.

@@gunnarrbloodaxe223 I had Sailor grind a Broad nib to Extra Fine. There is no splaying of the times. It is far from soft.

Was it a KoP nib? Because they are kinda on the soft side, and I'm not totally sure I've seen a broad one.

Sailor sells their own cleaning kits that have an attachment for their nipples to a syringe for extremely easy cleaning and they work perfectly with the King of Pen. They also sell reinforced cartridges designed for syringe filling which saves us from using the converters.
In my opinion these are the best writing pens on the market. The nib is absolutely unparalleled.

@@inkdependence The Sailor cleaning kit option looks very similar to what Schon makes. I need to get the Schon ones for my Pilots, Platinums, Bocks, and Jowos.

I’ve gushed often enough about the Sailor KoP. It remains one of my absolute favorite and indispensable pens of all time. Mainly, but not solely, owing to the truly sublime one-of-a-kind nib that writes like no other nib in the world. Expensive, certainly inordinately so in the U.S., but gosh I often say that the KoP’s nib alone makes the price totally worth it, all things considered. I own three KoPs, one in black ebonite. I have two Bs and an M for the nibs.
Lastly, I can’t help but feel that a KoP in that Chtulu color would be impossible to resist.
I’d say it’s probably even a cool idea for those keen on Sailor pens and not averse to the KoP’s size, to forgo buying any of the regular Sailor PGs/Slims/1911 and save up for a KoP instead.
Neat, fun review as always. The brief sight of the cat alone made my day. 🙂

Lovely pens, but I am going to keep believing that they are too big for my hand. I do like their looks, though. I do like a nib with bounce, though.
I do like the Nose-al transitions and the appearance of Himself in person.

I was unwilling buy a KOP, entirely because of the converter, but I happened to find a guy in Australia that made and sold on eBay refillable cartridges for the KOP that take advantage of all the available space and hold about 2.4 mls of ink. It cost, however, about $50 US including shipping and tax, but I got one anyway. Then I bought the least expensive KOP I could find, a black with gold trim 1911 (Profit) model to see if I like the nib and feed, and yes, it's a very good writer. I don't mind the Medium nib, although I may get it reground some day. It is, as you say, wet and responsive, and a pleasure to use.
Unfortunately, that guy doesn't seem to be selling those refillable cartridges any more, at least not on eBay. I'm glad I got one of them while the were available. There is a threaded end and you fill it with a syringe through that hole.

Great review: I so respect "King of 'Pen'" ((no "s," which I have NEVER, NEVER, NEVER seen it officially called, as Brian G. so horribly mispronounces!)) It really annoys when some just so inappropriately deviate. C'mon Goulet, get with the program. Anyway... lol... But back to this awesome review. Love your collection of Sailors.... Sailor is my brand, and yes, my King of Pen is at the top within my collection. The nib is a joy with which to write, and that incredible "bounce" it is so possessed makes for pleasurable hours of just but nothing else but scribbling absolutely nothing in particular... and is definitely wet. So worth the price of admission... Thanks Mike. Always love your content. Stay safe. Keep it coming.

Yeah, I've never heard it called the King of Pens, either. It could be a translation thing, but there's something distinctive about the odd grammar on that name that I really like.

Since I got my KoP earlier this year I seem to have quit buying pens. Instead, I want to get rid of my other 49 pens. What is the point of using a pen that isn't the King?
