The main reason you had WW1 was because of Colonialism which dragged other countries into it. War I began after the assassination of Austrian archduke Franz Ferdinand by South Slav nationalist Gavrilo Princip on June 28, 1914. Now what had that got to do with anything only that the Serbs wanted to be free of Austrian/ Hungarian dominance and there was the fear that they would get the protection of Russia. WW11 started as a result of Hitler wanting to expand his power over all of Europe. Again countries in Africa and the Middle East were drawn into to this war as they were under the Colonial powers of France, England, Italy(Lybia), so poor countries in Afria and the Middle East were drawn into a war which devitated the Middle East..an it's results still does as a result of decisions made after WW11.
Going back to EU conception being all about European Peace, what did the EC do about the War in Northern Ireland from the 1970ies, very little and without John Hume and George Mitchell this war would be still going.
Did not the EU encourage the breakup of former Yugoslavia by neglecting to get involved diplomatically in solving the difficulties which Tito managed to do for many decades. Sadly the lack of diplomacy here resulted in the slaughter that went on in Bosnia...There was the rush to prevent Yugoslavia slipping into an alliance with with Russia, that is why the EU started courting Slavonia and Slovakia rather than being patient and get all of Yugoslavia to join as a country.
Now you still have Kosovo which is in no mans land State wise..and nothing being done about it. So it annoys me when EU lectures say EU founding was about Peace...No, it was about keeping Russia in it's place, all the rest is about economics...Keeping well-paid jobs in Europe and having the poorer countries make our clothes, shoes and electronic gadgets etc turning a blind eye on the working conditions of the workers in China etc....I am not against the idea of a United Europe I am against the idea of an unelected Commission having more of less the driving seat...
