Technically the most efficient keyboard layout we use today is Stenography. Basically it types by syllables instead of letters, allowing you to type a full word in 1-2 keystrokes instead of 5-10. This is the format people use to type court transcripts in real time because it's just that much faster when you learn it

The funny thing is, the QWERTY keyboard was designed specifically to slow people tf down. The type writers mechanical bits couldn't keep up with typing speed and it would cause the machines to jam. So they made an intentionally fucky design so people would slow down and cause less jams.
No jokes.
There are better keyboard layouts, but most of the world has now spent decades using QWERTY and the effort and cost of changing everything over, retraining people and replacing all the keyboards and things just isn't considered worth it.
It's really up to habit. Keyboards for german speakers have QWETRZ instead of QWERTY and even though I type a lot in english I prefer using the german version keyboard :)
@@ChiaraW There is travel time between keys. Some layouts reduce that by a lot.
QWERTY is an intentionally ineffecient layou that forces a lot of unnecessary finger movement.
But yeah, swap a 120wpm typer from a QWERTY to a 'better' design and you will get a much, much slower typing speed. Muscle memory is a powerful thing. :D
The problem wasn't typing speed itself, but issues that arose from hitting two keys simultaneously as a result of that speed. Specifically concerning common letter pairs, such as "st" and "th."
If their hammers are directly next to each other, hitting that letter pair, would cause a jam. Thus the misconception about typing speed as being the reason is born. The QWERTY solution, wasn't to slow down typing as a whole, but specifically designed to slow down common letter pairings.
Just to make things even clearer: 216 words per minute, is the current world record, for typing speed, which was achieved on an Electric Typewriter, which means QWERTY layout. Speed of typing, as a whole, was not affected at all. If we only look at people who are alive today, 212 words per minute, would then hold the record. Both accomplished on a QWERTY keyboard.
@@deathsheir2035 Wait until these people hear about Stenography, and above 300 words per minute... although I doubt anyone could read it, though, it's a bit special. And I don't think anyone uses it except in courts.

I prefer the QWERTY keyboard. In the warehouse I work in all the forklifts are equipped with computers but half of them are old ones with QWERTY keyboards and the other half are newer ones with alphabetical keyboards and I hate switching back and forth all the time.

As someone with 76 and a half hours and counting in Monkeytype (and probably somewhere around a cumulative 24 extra hours on other typing sites) instead of doing useful things like homework, I relate to this too hard. And all I have to show for it is terrible accuracy and being able to type 10 randomly generated words at a maximum of 207 WPM so far. Also I've regressed in recent months because that's just how learning curves be.
