What a captivating title
Really bad timing for Disney to release that movie after Netflix‘s „Nyad“, that is basically the same story (different time and also based on a true story) but with better actors.
Not even remotely the same story.
On the one hand, swimming 21 miles, especially in the ocean, is an incredible feat that 99% of people - men or women - are simply not capable of.
On the other hand, women's swimming events were added to the Olympics in 1912. Gertrude Ederle participated in the 1924 Olympics where she won a gold medal in the relay swim and bronze medals in both 100m and 400m women's freestyle individual races. Then in 1925 she swam 22 miles across New York Harbor, from Battery Park to Sandy Hook. So when she swam across the English Channel in 1926 it shouldn't have been surprising that she succeeded.
It will be interesting to see if the movie ignores preceding events for the sake of making her more of an underdog.
It's Disney. I fully expect it to be nothing more than "every woman alive can do it and men are rubbish" at every opportunity. I'm just surprised they didn't make her African to boot.
I am looking forward to seeing this. It looks like it might be good.

I hope some people realize this is a live action biopic that Disney is releasing in theaters, as opposed to a remake that seemed to be all Disney would want to theatrically release

We just had a "swimmers movie" release about an older woman that was appealing and a real biopic of the great feat of this woman. Now, Disney is showing their basically the same movie with the person they are trying to make a star after the unfortunate star wars films she was in. Too bad this didn't come out first but Disney seems to always be second best...like the Star Wars francise which they totally botched the second time around. I'll pass on this one and most Disney films until management is changed....they are after all over 70 and have to resurrect others hits to be relevant now.

Oh, so it’s NYAD but a less impressive distance
It's a film about the defining marathon swim of the sport (a swim that Nyad attempted three times and never lasted more than a few hours). A film about a true hero of the sport who, unlike Nyad, actually was an olympic champion. Yeah, Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi are great documentary film makers, but I'd skip Nyad and hold out for this one.
