- Hi, in this video we attempt to repair various problems on a 1990s boat, a lovely Princess Riviera 286. This was filmed over 3 days and covers lots of different things.

When cutting a bigger hole in a panel with a different centre you can clamp a sacrificial piece of ply on the back of the panel then drill a new centre hole in it to guide the hole cutter through the panel. I have done it many times and it's quick and leaves a perfect new hole.
As others have said. You need to get the roof lining down and get it dried out. The stuff to use to seal the exterior fittings is Sikaflex. I use this on caravans and it stays flexible. Bathroom sealer goes hard in time. Make sure all the screw holes are full of it as well. Lots of tinkering to be done :)

I have seen this problem before: magnets simply disintegrate in large temperature changes and in a humid environment.
34:34 FYI that microwave will kill any 2.4ghz wireless connection while it's running. He might have to find a better spot if he finds the TV cutting out while preparing food.
After dealing with a leak on a radiator 3 times and trying to bodge it 2 times I would suggest sealing those fans with sealer anyway. Water has the amazing ability to get anywhere it likes and for the cost of a bead of silicon vs fixing the entire roof its worth doing.
I wonder if that white washer was meant to go on the other side of the rubber/neoprene seal, acting as a 'filler' to force a higher pressure seal around the inside when the whole thing's screwed down tightly?
It sounds perfect, almost idyllic but if you are thinking of becoming a boat owner there are plenty of things to consider. They do say that the happiest days of being a boat owner are the day you buy it and the day you sell it.
The copper oxide will have a resistance, yes. But copper oxide on copper also forms a diode! Early rectifiers used layers of them, before we invented silicon, in radios and electronics. So maybe a reverse-biased copper oxide "diode" is causing a voltage drop. The solution is the same either way but I thought you might find it interesting.
I don't know why but the boat videos / thumbnails really work for my brain. "click the boat! click the boat! ..."

I think the white ring is for trim around the vent inside.

The original ZTE 5G router (not most of the ones you get with a cellular service provider's contract) has two SMA aerial ports (I believe they are labeled tx and rx) above the phone port (rj11).
If you crack yours open, you might find a place to solder a connector in there and have external aerials.
I couldn't tell you for sure, but modern Wifi routers use multiple aerials for MIMO beamforming. They create waves that interfere with each other, constructively and destructively, to create points in space where the signal is strongest, and weakest. Takes a ton of maths, but the result is you can re-use the same frequencies at multiple points in space, and they don't interfere, or rather they interfere precisely where the router wants them to. So you can send much more data through the same area of space.
That's been part of Wifi for a few years, since they started coming with multiple aerials on them. It's also part of 5G for the same reason. It does mean, though, that the 5G network is physically tracking everybody, all the time, which I don't like. But if people want more bandwidth that's one way of using it more efficiently.
So both aerials are rx and tx, just located apart in space by a precise amount.
FYI, those are not iron filings, its rust that broke off after , well, something rusted. As for the vents, you are going to have problems, did you notice that you just put the screws in , without any sealant. It will leak from the screw holes for sure, I would get some marine sealant, not silicone. It is not leaking from the middle. I would use something like 3M 5200, pressure some into the screw holes before reinstalling the screws.
Use grease on wires to prevent corrosion in humid environments.
To seal against water, clean the area with alcohol and apply silicone in a tube, close tightly.
Replace old pointer meters with cheap LED voltmeters.

15:39 water is tracking through the screws , silicone in the screw holes before fitting the screws also silicone all surfaces before assembly (all surfaces thin coat) experience has taught me seal even if you don't think it needs it
ALWAYS use marine grade sealant even if whatever you are installing has a gasket on it. There is no such thing as too much sealant on boat parts!
As a caravanner rather than a boater, I would def have used Sikaflex on those vents - a sponge seal will absorb water and leak. The ceiling liner should be removed asap. Needing washers to hold it up says its rotten there. You might get away with cleaning and drying, but hoping it will dry out is not the way to go as the wood will continue to rot.

@@greenaum as I mentioned, I'm no boater, but caravans suffer similar water ingress issues. If possible, it would be wise to remove at least a section to see whats going on behind. Damp is iceberg like - by the time it shows, you are only seeing 10% of the problem, the rest is lurking waiting to shock you. Its invariably much worse than you think...but I hope it not for your sake!
@@chrisnewbold9876 Not my boat, dude! I haven't got a boat, but my mate once did. He started to "renovate" it by punching out the windows, ripping off the roof, and basically taking the top half off the thing leaving not much more than the fibreglass and it's pitiful 30 year old engine (originally meant for a car). Then the problem was looking at this devastated wreck and fabricating a new top-half, which was a lot harder than it looked, so he sold the boat for buttons to someone with actual woodwork skills. Was fun while it lasted though!

At 16:29 Looks like an old screw hole on the right, just above that philips screw head, may be letting in water. This corresponds to the wet spot on the headlining you pointed to earlier. Maybe the black seal for that vent is not quite covering the hole, as it is right on the edge.

That silver thing below the distributor is the oil pressure sending unit.
Not only the negatives strip behing the electric panel is worrying me but also (and even more) the big spots of black mold besides it. Also, at 12:38 it is pretty well visible there is a gap between the deck and the hatch they placed there. Someone clearly forgot to put in some silicone kit. And it looks like there is a lot of mold above the inside ceiling of the ship. Looks like there are a lot of hidden problems on this ship and I'm not too sure about how fixable they are. Looks like there has been leaking water for a very long time.
Boats, electric and water are a perfect combination
I have the same router and it's advisable to mount it near to a window. When signal is strong all the LED's are white

My Mate Vince is a Ship Mate.
Vince. Don't put the router near the microwave. That thing works almost in the same freq as wifi. The moment you turn on the microwave, the tv will disconnect. If you want an external antenna, get something like the huawei b2368.
Be careful that boat is full of black mold inside and outside from what I see on the video!
Massive thumbs for so many fixes.
Noticed a small window in the front cabin half way from the bow to where the router is, maybe you could get a good signal by that window.
Lining will need to come down and the mould treated as this isnt healthy.
Silver thing in the engine bay may be a fuel pump?
Sicoflex the vents to the boat to make sure its a full 100% seal, I also noticed a few screws that sat outside of the vents where water could get in.
The busbar, obviously has corrosion on it and should be sanded back for a good connection as do all the the connections, but I would also check the connection of what the busbar earths to.
Thanks Emma, moving the router to that next window will not only take it away from the sink, but also the microwave so I think that could be the potential new home for it.
Do you think if the leak is permanently fixed and above the lining is allowed to dry naturally that the mold will survive? I wonder if the dampness has gone if it will multiply or just die????
@@Mymatevince Boats are generally damp places. Even breathing in the cabin will produce moisture. I would assume though that once the leak is sorted then the dampness will eventually dry out and leave a slightly warped lining. The dry mould will still be there but the spores would still be not healthy. I am not an expert on fungi but would think it would need to be sprayed with a mould killer and or bleach and scrubbed away while wearing a mask. I would guess though that if the mould is left behind the lining and the lining is not moved that it would be a minimal risk.
@@Mymatevince Just read up on the matter and dry dead mould isnt dead, its just dormant and still has spores. Needs an anti fungal treatment.

On the part when you are looking at the 2 engines , the round cylinders screwed into the back of the engines by the distributors look like oil pressure senders ? Only need one wire on each of them and earth through the engine.

Thank you Chris. The cause of the iron fillings is still a bit of a mystery. It was full of them, so strange!
Did you consider trying compressed air on the gauges to blow the filings out?

Vince the boat lives in a salt air environment, the corrosion is something that is going to happen day in day out, the only way to stop it is to use a dielectic grease or better still inox MX3 anti-corrosion spray on all contacts.
Re: Iron Filings: Could you have blown them out with a compressor or vacuum? A stronger magnet?

That mating surface around the vents is terrible. You need to run silicone sealer into the screw holes and under the screw heads or water will track down the screws.

I'm wondering about the fan vent, does the black rubber piece remove? if so I'm wondering if the white piece should go behind the black rubber seal and not in front?
For future reference, if you'd secured a piece of wood behind that panel (using the existing screw holes), you could have used a hole saw.

If so, they are well over 10 years old.

My advice is take down the head linings and clean the backing and the roof. The rest without doing this you may get a very strong smell and it is quite a strange smell. From personal experience. Peter T Wales UK.
Hard agree. That degree of mould is not something to let sit around, even if it dries out - _any_ amount of water is enough to get it reactivated and throwing spores, and then it's all in the cushions and a smell and allergy nightmare.

That is 100% correct. The 350 CID (cubic inch displacement) would be a 5.7 liter. ASE GM certified mechanic here, love Chevys. Anyway I'm actually surprised they didn't run the 350's in that boat, a lot better engine than the 305, but still better than the Mercruiser IMO. Have a great weekend.
All those connectors look creepy. If I had my own boat, I would redo all the wires with shrink socks.
The shrink socks hadn't been shrunk lol. A bodged job for sure.
Great video Vince. One thing I noticed is I think old screwholes around the new fan on the outside of the boat, maybe the old ones had a larger bezel or something. I would definitely put silicone over those holes just to be sure.
We’ve just had fibre broadband fitted and are only getting 70 megabits a second!
At 27.20 I am pretty sure those are actually air filters and the ‘flame arrestor’ angle refers to the crankcase breather tube that is fed into the filter casing . Basically you wash these filter outs in diesel fuel periodically.
they are not air filters they are marine spark arrestors. Boats don't have air filters like cars. Your are right that the hose is a crankcase vent hose going into the spark arrestor.

Great video but, I'd be so worried about how much black mold that's in that boat. Especially behind that panel, he was working on and around the air vents underneath the white headliner.
He need to use a antimicrobial cleaner because just spraying bleach doesn't kill the mold but only turns it white.

Comment - The AC meter should read zero from a true DC source. Maybe there is some (a lot of) ripple on the DC line?

Maybe the meter has a built in bridge rectifier, in which case the DC would just pass through it, giving the correct reading,
With the hole saw. Put the size of the current hole and the bigger new size both on the drill attachment and it will center itself and allow you to cut the bigger size 👍
Unfortunately, the centres of the old and new holes weren’t in the same spot, so that wouldn’t work. Good idea in general, though.
If there is water leaking through the solar vents then it’s possible that the fan motor is corroded so it needs a bit of help to get going. A spray of WD-40 wouldn’t go amiss.

Really weird Gary, I'm waiting for the comments section to work it out but so far it is still a mystery. I thought maybe it was friction wearing away the magnet, but this seems unlikely. The units were quite well sealed as well so if someone was grinding nearby it wouldn't enter the units 🤔

I may be wrong but I think it may be an anti dieseling solenoid, cuts the fuel to the carbs when the ignition is turned off.
I wonder if a magnetic tape eraser (de-magnetizer) would have worked on those magnetic filings.

It's a bit of a mystery that both those meters were full of iron filings. I've never seen that before, no idea how that could have happened!

I believe you are having a serious moisture problem in the electrics cabinet. Problem with corrosion will return.
I think those meters have disintegrating magnets - that rubbish looks like ceramic magnet debris. Why that has happened I have no idea.
I'm sure you could get some digital guages, as an upgrade and enhancement.
Blow out the gauge with compressed air.
