Sonic 2 was a movie that was way better than it deserved to be. I don't know how they did it, but it is probably one of the best video game movie adaptations we've ever seen. So how did they do? Well let's discuss it as we tackle the scene that best represents Sonic as a franchise with a location that's practically an in-game level. All the while tackling a story plot we've seen multiple times, but perhaps in one of the best ways. This is the scene that encapsulates everything this movie represents, this is the scene that CHANGED Sonic 2...

can you do a review on the iron giant?
For forgot mention the drowning music that was put in the scene

Sonic fact: One of the reasons Sonic can't swim is that the design team and other staff mistakenly thought hedgehogs couldn't swim.
Yuji Naka
My one major gripe with this movie was that, Sonic was shown that he hated water… but he loves taking Bubble Baths? Why?
@@cloudshines812 I mean you're not at risk at drowning in a bubble bath. At least not a big risk.
Well Sonic (in the movie) spent most of his life in green hills and always on land, he probably never learned to swim
and he's afraid of being drowned underwater, I mean, who doesn't lol
Far from the actual reason why he can't swim, I also like to think that somehow the water traps within his quills and it weighs him down.
Knuckles had the best lines in this movie
“My revenge will come when you least expect it, fox”
“How dare you attack me in my hour of sorrow!”
“I understand nothing of what you just said”
@Tinder in real life 🅥 buzz off, bot
"Oh, they are stairs."
"Dot, dot, dot."
"Ah, my victory chariot!"
“Sonic! I’ve been told that they have Sprinkles!”
I’m so glad they didn’t just make Knuckles a complete joke like they easily could’ve, but instead chose to actually make him layered and add personal tension between him and Sonic adding and building upon the first movie’s set up and here meeting it’s pay off, I seriously hope this is the wake up call that Knuckles the Echidna isn’t a meathead and he’ll finally be an emotional badass again
Yeah, they kept just a LIL of his stupidness but a TON and I mean A TON of his badass
@@Yozhi2 I wouldn't say its stupidness I think it's more of not knowing that much about earth
@@petergriffinsbrother2499 yeah
@Kian exactly! Knuckles isn't stupid he is just Naive and gullible. He trusts easily due to his own way of being and expecting that loyalty to exist in others.
With the previous writers of the games finally being casted away, SEGA finally decided that the previous writer of the IDW series actually knows and loves the series for he was there since the beginning, grew up with the games, and whatnot. He’s actually the writer for the new game: Frontiers which actually looks more hopeful. Granted, they still have Roger as Sonic, but hopefully the new writer will actually allow him to fully embrace the role like he did in the Boom tv series, none of that “oh well kids like stupid jokes so let’s throw as many of them in the game as possible and make it to where there’s no tension in any scene whatsoever as for if there were any it’s immediately ruined because of said jokes.” (You can tell I honestly hate the story from Colors onward due to the bad writing and the writers themselves literally admitting to only watching AMVs and reading Wikipedia when they were hired on).
I'm so glad they did Knuckles justice. I expect them to nail Shadow, too.
@Kian That’s what I’m saying but people keep saying I don’t know what I’m talking about and that I’m just a butt hurt Adventure fan. I’m not saying it’s impossible to do I’m just trying to say it’s not gonna be 1 to 1 with the game’s cannon like people would like it to be.
@@tjz3158 I mean your right. They rearranged and edited the source material and made it into something new. Something fresh. With the way the movies have been structured, the following won't be the same.
But isn't that the fun? Taking something people love and adding a little twist to your liking? People seem to really like it, and it's appealing to the newer generations as well as pleasing the older ones. Remodeling a story by adding a spin.
That's the beauty of the Sonic movies. As far as I know, no one has reimagined the source material to fit the liking of most people, write a decent/good story, and make the characters accurate/make them the best that they have been in a while. It's literally making an au and making it into a movie franchise. Feel free to disagree, but the Sonic movies are pretty great to me.
@Kian Direction for him from the writers in a podcast is more of the vengeful emotionally damaged characterization from his debut. Because it's obvious they're doing a more loosely based SA2 story, which they said they're taking inspiration from after playing the game.
But it's pretty true that it's really hard to nail Shadow's character, generally. SA2 and Sonic 06 nailed it his character.
I demand they adapt Shadow the Hedgehog, if only to pull the story's potential that was buried beneath the dev team's "mile wide, inch deep" approach.
Fun fact: When Sonic tries to swim out of the labyrinth after saving Knuckles, if you listen carefully, you can hear the Classic Sonic drowning theme.
oooo ill have to see it again
Really?
@@skintgirafde320 yeah, it's subtle though. kind of a blink and you'll miss it thing.
Seriously? Why didn't they make it easy to hear? It's a bummer I didn't notice it at first.
Knuckles in this movie is by far his best interpretation.
@Kian nah it's more natural that he leans more to the tribalistic side
Yeah, and he is gullible but not stupid. I hate how he is portrayed as a moron nowadays. Kinda wish he had more of the og mischievous side to him but overall I love this version of him
Damn you clearly never played any Sonic games
@Kian unterschlupfplätzchenutensilien
@Kian True, I adore him in this Movie. But I also Love him in Adventure 1, 2, and the Sonic OVA Movie!
I really like that sonic in the movies can't swim. In every games where sonic has to do something with water, he is underwater
It’s crazy to think that one of the most thought out and passion project for a video game movie was sonic. The game that seems the least suitable for a movie adaptation. Funny enough other video games that seem easy to make into a movie have failed so hard to accomplish with the little blue hedgehog had
I like to think that the taser eggman attempts to use to betray knuckles is a reference to how in Sonic 3, Eggman electrocutes knuckles when he tries to take the master emerald. Also not sure why Dazz said Sonic games never had escape from catastrophe sequences. Sonic literally has so many of them. Running from the GUN truck in City Escape, running from falling scrap in Final Rush, running from a fire tornado in Crisis City, and so much more.
That movie was so freaking good!!! Can’t wait for the 3rd movie

Especially the Knuckles spin-off series which is coming out sometime next year.🥊
This movie is proof that the people behind the movie can easily make an unleashed or 06 interpretation and get 90% (if not, all) of the audience to like it.
You're absolutely right, stranger. The moment I saw the first one, I honestly was itching for an 06 storyline, and I hope we'll eventually get one a few movies down the line! 06 had so much potential when you try to look past the flaws, since they've got a pretty solid premise. A cap to Shadow's character arc in the form of literally fighting off his own inner demons, an epic battle against a mad sun god, the themes of bottling up emotions and Sonic helping Elise through her problems...
Could you imagine what Solaris would look like in stunning CGI? A huge, wispy bird-god who rumbles the whole theatre with his roar, bonus points if they even sample it from NASA recordings of the real sun.
Do tell if you've got any other ideas, I'd love to hear em, especially how you'd want to see an Unleashed plotline.
Oh god I hope they put Memphis Tennessee in the movie...he would be freaking awesome to see him animated. Oh god imagine seeing him AGAIN 😲😲
@@nuggs5509 Imagine the wispy physics from the smoke! Might just learn how to animate in CGI to make that happen...
@@AvalonAnthros AHHHHHH yeeees! That would be a dream come true ☺️
Actually the Labyrinth zone wasn't entirely green screened in fact most of it was actually real except for the water of course the director confirmed it in a Twitter post
Also here's a Easter egg that I heard
When Knuckles starts to swim away from Sonic if you listen closely in the movie you can here the first 4 seconds of the Drowning music
It sucks they didn't do the full theme but maybe in 3
A thing I love in the water part of this sequence; I love that the music is a remaster of the old drowning music but into orchestra
Sonic’s fear of swimming is most definitely established by the rowboat scene with Tom. He falls into the water and yells “I can’t swim!!” with very real fear in his voice. 👌🏼
Fun Fact: When Sonic almost drowns, the drowning jingle subtly splays
Yo who else guessed the plot of Sonic 3 before the end credit cutscene

The reason sonic may hesitate to use his full speed is because his chaos energy, the source of his speed as explained in the movie and comics, drains extremely quickly when using his max speed. Which is also why he ran out of juice when baiting robotnik to chase him with the death egg robot.
A GAME MOVIE ADAPTATION WAS REALLY GOOD?!?!?! IT’S A MIRACLE
I love this movie because of the nods to the best sonic era - the 90's - and how well they handle the story and genuinely told a good story and didn't use this movie for a quick buck like they could have.
10:34 well the Chaotix have already been established as movie canon, they made a cameo in the Pre-Quill comics
True dat! And it's honestly kinda surprising.
I always loved Sonic Heroes for having "running from catastrophe" sequences at the end of every act 2
"Sonic the Hedgehog" (2020) is an adaption of "Sonic X: Ep.1-13 - New World Saga" (2003).
"Sonic the Hedgehog 2" (2022) is an adaption of "Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles" (1994).
"Sonic the Hedgehog 3" (2024) is confirmed to be an adaption of both "Sonic Adventure 2" (2001) & "Shadow the Hedgehog" (2005).
This is how to adapt a videogame by actually get the characters & the world right and adapt the storylines from the source material in a new unique fun way.
This is how you don't get the 90s live-action Mario movie or something boring like the Warcraft movie.
I also viewed these films as adaptations of their own games. Sonic 1 only having Sonic and Eggman as main game characters just like the original game, and Sonic 2 having borrowing heavy beats and plot points from both Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 the games.
Now with Sonic 3, Shadow and G.U.N. Being confirmed, we can expect an adaptation of Adventure 2
@@cloudshines812
The producers did confirm the 3rd film is an adaption of both SA2 & the Shadow game.
While the 2nd film is obviously S3&K while not being specifically stated but the 1st is speculation on my part but I think the plot is most in common with the New World Saga (Ep.1-13) from Sonic X. Sonic gets transported from the animal world to the human world and gets adopted by humans while being terrorised by Eggman.
@NES
I confused SA2's release year with SA1's release year which came you in 1998 in Japan (& 1999 in the USA).
@Kian It's obvious they're gonna look into that cause they made some references to it in two films. They really take all the things fans love and use it to fit into the plot without shoved in fan service without substance.
One thing I would love to point out is when Sonic is underwater, there is a small snippet in the music that has the drowning theme from Sonic 1
My guy, I've watched this scene over 100 times, and I see new things each time. Like Knuckles grabbing Sonic's wrist and he kicks him off, and the 4 attack combo on the stairs was so GOD!!!
Sonic 2 was great when they focussed on the sonic tropes. My fav parts were with the labyrinth and the giant eggman robot. Almost everything before felt as fluff or unecessary plot. I want to see sonic getting hit by a trap and accidentally drop his bag of rings so he goes to quickly grab them up before continuing on a giant airship
Like the First Movie,I Love All of the Scenes in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and I'm Looking Forward to see Sonic 3,Also Fun Fact, the Glow on Sonic,Tails, and Knuckles made a Appearance in the Adventure Games and Heroes Differentiate the Characters.
The third one is gonna be amazing when they play live and learn at the final fight
I really enjoyed both Tails and Knuckles in this movie. They were well rounded and were not one note. The trio were hilarious in their interactions
Sonic's inability to swim was well established in Sonic 2, so you were right to reference it. I don't know if it played any role in the first film, offhand, but Sonic almost drowned while fishing with Tom in their first scene. Then came the running on water scene, then the near drowning in the temple after Eggman got away with the Master Emerald, so yeah, the rule of three is faithfully observed. It's in the movie just enough to feel natural without dragging everything down.
Taser isn’t all that awkward, remember in Sonic 3&K when Knuckles tried to stop him, he electrocuted him off his egg mobile while stealing the Master Emerald
8:41 I think the "using a bubble to regain breath underwater" wasn't copied in other movies possibly because it was deemed to unrealistic. It kind of feels like one of those things that only really work as a game mechanic.
Fun trivia, a lot of the temple was actually stage props. Minimal green screen according to the director's commentary.
Absolutely one of the best fight scenes this decade, if you ask me. Hopefully Sonic vs Shadow will be even better.
This movie does a good job of illustrating how Knuckles is not a total dumbass, just kind of stupid with logic. He’s like a dnd character with high wisdom and low intelligence.
I still need to watch this movie.
Then why did you watched this video?
I don't see the issue with Iblis considering Sonic has always fought demons and gods. That's a staple. Iblis and Mephiles are no different.
And Sonic using a sword is not only aesthetically badass, but it could be a really good gameplay mechanic if refined more.
So I'm not seeing what's "weird" about it.
1:24 He's even had a best friend who's big final form was literally made out of temples.
And the cherry on top of that is as Sonic tries to resurface, but fails, there's a slight hint of the drowning theme.
So. if you want to also look at another amazing nod to the classics in this movie, and in the first one. This is the first movie that we see sonic do the spindash in. during this part of the movie there are several moments when sonic will rev up in a ball and blast away (Complete with the spindash sound effect!). He never did that in the first movie. there he only ever rolls into a ball. either while being still, or from already existing momentum. Which is exactly how it went down in sonic 1 to sonic 2
true this scene was epicc

One thing I liked in this film was the Death Egg Robot
I don't know if it was called that, but I'm calling it that
I was able to look at it and think "yeah that looks like it would be a Boss in one of the games
Fun fact: The temple scene was actually a practical set, not green screen!
Really? Wow. That must have cost a lot to do. To build an actual Sonic level like that in real life is insane
I think the best part about the scene outside of the fight, was Sonic’s reasoning for saving Knuckles in the aftermath of the fight. Recalling what Tom told him earlier and how both Knuckles and Eggman were his responsibility, and his interaction with Knuckles earlier in the mountains on how both lost their old families on the same day.
“Being a hero isn’t just about saving lives. It’s about taking responsibility for the people around you.”
2:29 whats cool about this master emerald shrine is that it looks very similar in shape to the one from sonic adventure
Never played any traditional Sonic games. But, I loved these films. Can't wait for more from that universe.
I think the sonic. Movies work so well because sonic doesn't realy have a story
Yo Dazz, You missed the part where the drowning music was playing but for like a few seconds.👂
6:26 There’s probably a good reason for that. The majority of Labyrinth Zone was made with physical sets as opposed to being all CG.
I knew the pfp and channel art was new, but couldn't put my finger on it until lookin' at a vid from a few months ago. I like the realistic art a lot, Dazz!
That one second where he taps the death egg robot with his shoe to knock it over is also a reference to the opening cinematic from 06.
Wonderful video loved every second
Personally, my favorite part of the movie is the part where team sonic is developing the plan to take down the death egg robot, and Super sonics transformation.
Sonic behind the water fall where you just see his eyes and the glow kinda reminds me of when sonic turned into dark sonic, in Sonic X
8:48 Ice age: Collision Drift has an air bubble scene
That's true and that's exactly what Sonic reminded me of when he ran across the ocean it reminded me of when Dash did it in Incredibles and I forgot it was in Frozen II
Super awesome video
Can you do a “The Scene That CHANGED Hotel Transylvania…” video at some point?
Personl I thought the scene where we see Knuckles' father was what changed the Sonic franchise, you know because of the whole Penders case and certain creative restrictions.
7:58 D-does he knows that Prision Island and City Escape is a thing?
A remix of the drowning theme is in that scene though it is a little quiet
5:25 lmfao 😂🫣
4:28 And with that middle screen, Knuckles only should be charging from the left. Sony only from the right.
It still amazes that it came out only 2 years after the first but it's actually better!
The one thing I wish that they did during the water scene where Sonic saves Knuckles is add the terrifying drowning theme from Sonic 1 even if it's quiet in the background it would have added so much.
It actually is in there, and it is indeed very quiet. Listen at around 1:00 in the score for that scene and you’ll hear it.
czcams.com/video/3qcegBAPtTg/video.html
1:19 Yep, that’s definitely Lost World alright.
Literally in 06 sonic gave the advice to run from your problems
It would normally be taken that way, I think. But remember, for Sonic, running is equivalent to taking action. His fighting style is reliant on his speed. So when he says "If you can worry, you can run" (or something to that effect, can't remember the exact line), he's basically saying, "If you're capable of expending the energy to panic, you're capable of doing something about it." Sonic runs toward threats, not away from them.
Now to sit back and wait for whoever voices Shadow in 3...
Best movie
0:19 *nice*
The scene also played the music from Ant-Man & The Wasp.
Really? I thought it was Tom Holland's Spider-Man.🔴🔵
@@jwroot That's only when Knuckles shows up in the house, it played like a evil version of Holland's Spider-Man theme. lol
Epic Sonic video
fun fact: a chunk the labyrinth was actually made practically, so robotnik, maybe sonic & knuckles was (kinda) really running down an actual set
How come we don’t see live action dazz as much anymore
the labyrinth set and the mushroom planet is actually real! only the far away stuff is green screen
You are awesome 😎
You missed the drowning theme after knuckles swam away
They did, but it lasted four seconds from the jiggles.
Actually, the comic that came with the movie had the chaotix’s cameo during the knuckles portion
God, I really hope the people writing the flash movie watched this one and took notes.
Let's not forget to mention about the upcoming Sonic Netflix TV show that will release at the end of this year!
this has a lot of "my collage professor said my report needed 400 more words" energy.
"Iblis."
(Shows Mephiles)
Knuckles. Knuckles changed sonic 2. In a good way
tbh i thought this video was gonna be about the original storyboard where knuckles was about to just accept death by drowning lol
A lot of the temple hallways were actual sets
You should make a scene review of the “running up that hill scene” from stranger things
Wow!
This is the reason why no one's found my sisters body yet
Sonic movie 2 is the best movie!
Everyone who made this put a lot of effort into it.
The temple run scene made me feel like I was watching someone play through the Jungle Joyride stage
Edit: I also really wouldn’t mind seeing a werehog version of this Sonic
Well this was interesting
What made me want to watch this video even more is it said

5:27 what made you feel you had to show this WHYYY?!?!?
Cool 😎
Yes sonic
It was so weird hearing the best part of the ant man and the wasp ost in this scene
Not sure if this is a great video of references to sonic ngl, for example he you referred to iblis with a picture of mephiles, referred to pyramid cave to a temple even though it’s an eggman base, saying sonic 3 will be one more 2d representation even though the main source of marketing is going to be shadow etc.
Nice to know they made sonic unleashed relevant by using the ENTIRE temple designs from the game 😄
We can all just agree that Sonic Movie 2 is basically every sonic fan’s dream
