As an educator I can vouch for the realism of this scene. Almost every teacher has watched a scene like this unfold, a kid just needs some help but parents at best ignore it or at worst do stuff like this. It's an awful feeling. Joe must have some teachers in the family bc the teacher perspective of the show is almost always spot on.
Usually the parents are embarrassed and try to make up for it somehow. They just need to focus on the real problem at hand.
My sister works for a special needs school and sees parents like this all the time. I think they mean well and want the best for their kid, but they don't realize that they are creating or perpetuating the problem. I thought Joe did a great job proposing a solution, especially considering how close of a relationship he has with the family as a former babysitter.

@donnymcjonny6531 He wasn't, but he has more than a few friends who went on to be teachers, and this is basically Joe looking at the "what ifs" had he followed a similar route. It's pretty adorable, as everything he does seems to be.
In a recent interview he said that he is close friends with a guy who is a middle school choir teacher and just wanted to explore what life would be like if Joe himself never found comedy and became a middle school teacher. He said there are so many of these kinds of people in the world who lead full lives but we never hear about it.

An absolute crying shame that this was cancelled. This show was revolutionary in the way that it was simultaneously surreal and heartwarming without losing ground on either front. I've always been a fan of "weird Adult Swim comedy", and this was the only comedy that I could watch with my 50's era parents and share the same enjoyment. I'd wager that there won't be anything like this show ever again.
Joe, if you're reading this, you made my old man laugh in a way I've never heard him do before, and my folks are seriously debating moving to Marquette. I hope that you keep making stuff like this.

The ending of this episode had me in hysterical tears. The whole show is so sincere and warm, but just self-aware enough so as to not make that sincerity schmaltzy, while simultaneously also not undercutting it. This one was one of my favorites.

I am divorced and my eldest daughter is going exactly through the anger issues I think every teenager has. She lives with her mom, and shares a bedroom with her sister. I have made the same suggestion to her mother but she did not listen to me. In my house, I do not have three bedrooms or a basement, but then the youngest sleeps with me and the oldest in her own bedroom. Just having that space of her own every other weekend has brought some peace to my teen girl. Joe is SPOT ON.

Did you watch the rest of the episode? After her parents calmed down, they tried Joe's idea and it had a positive impact on their daughter. She stopped acting out so much.

She looks more believable like this. Sure there's just some Gothic fashion elements still around but very unusual to have straight up Goths like from the 80's to the 00's.
I WAS a Goth and my god has TV gotten them wrong with a one-to-one association with being depressed, mean and disaffected. It's as dumb as thinking every one into rap is a scowling thug. It's just not true.
