Gangubai's daughter speaks to outlook

  • Up the flight of stairs in a dingy building in Gully No. 14 in Kamathipura, if you turn to your right, a passageway appears. Under the reddish glow, the bust of Gangubai cast in marble appears. An epitaph is there. Not much. Estd. 1981 by Sasa Ratna alias Aunty Family. It isn’t really a replica of hers if you compare with the photo that hangs in her adopted daughter’s one-room tenement in the twelfth lane.
Babbi is one of the many children Gangubai adopted. Across from Babbi’s room is Gangubai’s former living quarters, which is now a small factory.
Babbi says Gangubai Kathiawadi didn’t represent the real Gangubai.
For instance, there was no Ramnik Lal, she says.

Its sad how Gangubai initially wanted to be an actress but was, I assume, forced into becoming a sex worker due to circumstances and now after her death, she has a movie on her life which the privileged upper class ppl profit off of it. On the brighter side tho, to be able to hear her story is great and inspiring.

Why do you always think it that way abt them earning profit!! They could have made some other story or some other movie to earn profits but they chose to show the Gangubai side world to the world. Tbh before this movie, many of us didn't even know who she was. After the makers made the movie, kam se kam we know the legend now. Don't always blame Bollywood. When it's doing good, appreciate it. Hollywood ko support karte ho har dam but at least when Bollywood is trying to bring a change to it's movies perspective, try to respect it and encourage them, instead of being a Kangana, who is only making comments to make controversies.

@@rridhi8614 thats why i said on the brighter side we heard abt her and got to know her story and rightfully so what she did is commendable and deserves to be known. It's not really black and white, its not abt bollywood is good or bad, right or wrong and I acknowledge that. But also I do think that Gangubai's unfilled dreams and then afterwards a movie being made on her is ironic and deserves to be talked about too.
Also it makes us question right that who knows how many of struggling actress from lower or middle class families were not able to achieve what they wanted and probably were forced into the same as Gangubai.

If what this lady is saying is true, then why does gangubai's (adopted or not) grand daughter Bharti is saying that she didn't run brothel and also she was not from the kamathipura red light area. We know that she was forced into this thing, as she wanted to be an actor. But, Bharti was saying that this was untrue and she never became a sex worker. Her story of a social worker was indeed true as we've witnessed that in the movie as well. But, Bharti was not accepting the thing of gangubai being a madam of brothel, else the social worker thing was right.
We don't know who is saying right, who is saying wrong. But, whether she was a sex worker or not, she did alot of things for her people there and so that's what is commendable. We should respect them irrespective of their occupation.

International countries ppl watch forget . Not to make issues for diverting citizens during elections time. Plz citizen’s focus on the vote ballot box not on so called created filmy stories. Hijab and now gangubhai Muddas are only keeping citizens of our country busy from not knowing what is actually happening in our country?

The movie is a cinematic portrayal of a real story....She fought for the rights of prostitutes despite being a victim of the system herself..sx workers kind of ppl society looks down upon....Nobody looks out for sx workers or helps them cos its looked at as a taboo...Even our govt doesnt do anything..She was a woman and she cudnt do anything single-handedly without opposition in an area that was ruled by men hence she had to take help of the ones in charge, that were related to the mafia..There's nothin wrong with that.It was for a good cause.
