Dell Optiplex 7020 CPU Cooler Upgrade

  • I purchased a cheap Dell Optiplex off eBay for $73 including tax and shipping. Problem was, it only had a Core i3 4130 in it, which includes a CPU cooler with a max TDP of only 65 watts. I am upgrading to an 80 watt Xeon E3-1271 v3 (which is basically an i7 4790 without onboard graphics). Obviously, this will require a CPU heatsink/fan upgrade. I didn't see any good videos dealing specifically with this subject, so I decided to make my own. This method should work with any of the following models:
    Optiplex 3020, 7020, 9020
    Optiplex 3010, 7010, 9010
    Optiplex 390, 790, 990
    Basically, any cooler with a 92mm fan will fit inside these cases.
    Amazon Affiliate links for CPU coolers with 92mm fans:
    Cooler Master Hyper T2: amzn.to/2GFV3vl
    Cooler Master Hyper TX3 (cooler used in this video, 3rd party seller): amzn.to/327QHp1
    Arctic Freezer 7 X Compact CPU Cooler: amzn.to/327eBRo
    Enermax ETS-N30 II Compact CPU Cooler: amzn.to/3jTEDOf
    Scythe Katana 5 Air CPU Cooler 92mm: amzn.to/2F7AFTs
    If you use any of these in an Optiplex, please comment with success stories. Also, if you find any broken links, please let me know and I will remove them.

    There are a couple tips worth mentioning in regards to these modifications too.
    The first being, that once the aftermarket heatsink is installed, along with the 92mm Dell fan, there is a noticeable air gap between the heatsink and the fan itself which is especially obvious when viewed from above. Placing a piece of electrical tape over that gap to close it helps eliminate blowout pressure, and ensures more air is forced THROUGH the heatsink rather than trying to find a way to bleed out the sides. For people like myself who have 9020 Optiplex's with 4790K's in them, the extra insurance of air being forced through the heatsink is always a positive thing. Since as we all know, Haswell chips love to run hot anyway.
    The second tip being that once this project is completed, you will end up with two spare cooling fans left over. Which if you have a upgraded PSU like myself, it's not hard to get a 4-pin to molex adapter, and mount either/both of the spare fans at the front of the case. Thus allowing additional air to be pulled in to feed the 'push' fan on the cooler. This assumes you want a neutral pressure system inside the case, verses allowing the PSU and rear exhaust fan to create a negate pressure environment in the case. Admittedly, you will loose all fan speed control over it, as it is a 'dumb' fan being powered directly by the PSU. So it will be running at it's maximum speed, which is why I'd only recommend this with the Cooler Master fan, as it will be quieter than the stock Dell fan. But irregardless, modern cooling fans are pretty quiet even under full load. So it shouldn't be too distracting, and is a inexpensive way to add even more cooling to the system. Especially if you have a powerful GPU dumping it's heat into the case as well.
    Hopefully this information is useful to at least someone. Great video too. No distracting music or ADHD inspiring editing. Just straight to the point. A much needed breath of fresh air in the tech side of the CZcams community.

      @@EscoTech I would really like to thank you for the tips as I just did this same mod, but just a bit more advanced.
      I used a Vetroo v3 cooler because of a tip a Amazon reviewer said, "if you have a 9020 opt, you can directly mount the bracket with M3 x 20mm bolts and some washers". ps from me, get wide M3 washers. Then I used two [TL- C9B] fans for matching cooling performance and some adapter cables (dell F.U. for the property fans). Finally after some paper cuts and a drop of MX- 5, I HAD TEMPS IN THE 40c range.
      I also took the CPU fan from the V3 and "float mounted" it to the front grill with a lot of zip ties. It looks really cool with the case closed. But looks really scuffed if you open up the case, but the mounting method is so strong you can pick up the case by the fan more or less.
      Anyway I would like to thank you for your tips and explanations, without them I would probably still be in 85c CPU H3LL.
      Ps, for any one who reads this and trys to do the same thing; there are 3 things that you need to know. 1) to mount a fan using my method you have do as best of a job cable managing possible (mini zip tie mounts are good thing to use). 2) you have to "triple zip tie mount" the fan on the right side. 3( there is not enough space for me to tell you the full instructions on how I did it, but if you can figure out that first part the rest is easier. 3.5( if you don't use some o rings between the fan and the zips it will make it a bit louder, but not as much as using the wrong kind of fan, or the CPU fan off the V3 if you want to use that one. That thing screams in comparison to the other fans that I used, it's louder than my old hard drive.

    Perfect! Honestly the only person who has done a good detailed installation on a cpu cooler on the optiplex. Just for future upgrades they sell a adapter cable for the proprietary pin for the fan to a 4 pin so you can install better fans and control them via motherboard for 8$ i believe. I am in the proccess of doing this to my optiplex as well!

      Thanks, like I mentioned, this is part of a bigger video/project, but I checked around and didn't see anyone else specifically cover a cooler upgrade. That made me think there was a need for this video. I have seen those fan adapter cables, but have never used one. Went the easier route this time, I guess. A better fan would probably help cooling, but the Dell one does OK. Thanks for watching and the feedback, I really appreciate it!

    I also tried to install a Cooler Master Hyper TX3 onto a Dell Optiplex 790 (LGA 1155). I was using the included push pins from the Hyper TX3. The trick is to remove the grey plastic washers around the LGA 1155 holes. They are simply glued onto the motherboard PCB. The plastic washers prevent the push pins from pushing down into the PCB. I did this to save some money from buying an OEM Dell CPU cooler.

    Just a heads up on the 3020, every one of them I've opened up doesn't have the backplate integrated into the socket retention bracket. They instead, have a more typical, removable backplate, so swapping the cooler should be like any after market motherboard. Though, I can't say that's the case for every 3020, just the ones that I've opened.

    • @EscoTech
      @EscoTech  Před 3 lety

      Good to know. I would imagine it's like that for all the 3020's then. It's funny to see the subtle differences Dell did between models in the same generation/line-up. Who makes those decisions? Lol. Thanks for dropping by and keep up the awesome work on your channel!

      @@EscoTech Thanks!
      From what I can tell, the 7020 and 9020 CPU retention bracket can't be swapped to the 3020 since the standoffs are too big for the mounting holes, so I would say it's safe to say that's how all the 3020's are. It would be interesting to know how that decision was made. I'd guess it's just what the supplier had on hand, or something, and they rolled with it?

    Thank you so much. This video is invaluable. I have an Optiplex 7010 MT, and have installed the Antec Earthwatts PSU and the ASUS Nvidia GTX 1050ti in it. I am wondering if I will have enough room for this cooler due to the proximity of the newly added GPU. I have also seen you comment about the OEM CPU cooler in your PC being rated for core i3 only. If I end up buying a Dell OEM cooler instead of the aftermarket one, how would I know whether it's rated for core i3, i5 or i7? Also, would the Coolermaster you've installed here be able to accommodate one of those high rpm Delta fans made for Dell on its side? The only reason I ask is because some of those can go into 4000+ rpm quite easily, and I am wondering if this cooler is structurally sound enough to withstand a high speed fan sitting on its side. I do like your idea of swapping out fans. I have had so much grief with the Dell motherboard and the aftermarket case fans. It wasn't until I bought the Silverstone 92mm fan and a 4 to 5 pin adapter that things are ok again. Dell seems to like the design with fewer but very high rpm fans in their PC's, and their motherboard will complain loudly if there are any deviations from that.

    • @EscoTech
      @EscoTech  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks for the positive feedback! There's nothing fancy about the OEM coolers, it's just the size that is the key as to which processor it was designed for. I'm not sure how visibly obvious it is with this generation, but I know for the Sandy/Ivy Bridge systems, the cooler that came with the i5 and i7 was about twice as tall as the one that came with the i3. I don't know that I have seen or used the higher rpm fans you mentioned, but the tower cooler in this video mounts the fan solidly to the cooler with the plastic brackets. I can't imagine it would have any problems with any fan. The fan I have on this cooler doesn't spin very fast(1500 rpm, maybe), so I also bought a 4 to 5 pin adapter and am going to test out the Coolermaster fan that came with the cooler to see if it makes any difference in temperature. As for space, the cooler should fit fine above the GPU. Good luck with your build!

    Interesting that your temps were so high with the factory cooler. I installed a 4790 in my 3020MT, with the factory cooler, and my max temp while running cinebench 23 was 77 degrees. Idle temps hover in the mid to high 30’s.

    So replace the fan that comes on the cooler with the dell fan, and get the spring, washer, and screws from the old cooler and that’s just about it? (Also I have a 9020 do you think the fan would work in it too, or could I take the old fan from the old cpu cooler?)

    • @EscoTech
      @EscoTech  Před 3 lety +1

      I don't have a 9020 to check, but I think the chassis and CPU fan connectors are the same as the 7020. Keep in mind the stock CPU cooler uses an 80mm fan and the rear case is a 92mm fan. If you can figure out a way to mount the 80mm on a cooler, I can't imagine it'd make much difference than sourcing a 92mm fan, but the 92mm one is probably going to be easier to mount if you decide to use it. Otherwise, there are 5-pin to 4-pin adapters that would allow you to use the fan that comes with the new cooler. As long as the Dell fan header spins it fast enough, that would probably provide the best cooling. Thanks for checking out the video!

    Thank you for the very informative video!
    I upgraded my PC (which has an Optiplex 7020 motherboard) with the very same Hyper TX3 you used in the video, and it works great. Under load the CPU core temperatures are about 10° C lower than they were with the stock cooler (reaching about 70° C rather than 80° C.) I used the original Cooler Master fan using one of those adapter cables to connect a 4-pin PWM fan to the 5-pin Dell motherboard connector, and it worked without issues (no fan error on boot.)
    I'm curious whether you were able to get your Optiplex working using the Xeon E3-1271 v3 CPU. I've experimented with running a Xeon in an Optiplex 9020, and I was not able to get it to boot.

    • @EscoTech
      @EscoTech  Před 3 lety

      That's funny because I also bought a Dell 5 pin fan adapter and have been meaning to do a video comparing the cooling performance between the Dell and CM fans. Glad to hear yours works well.
      As far as the Xeons, I've put a lot of them in Optiplexes and never had an issue. Make sure you update the BIOS. Even though Dell doesn't specifically say it, I'm sure they add CPU microcodes and the e3-1271 v3 is the Haswell refresh, so it might need a new microcode. I have used the e3-1270 v3 in a couple 7020/9020 systems. Also, even though the Xeons use ECC RAM, it's not supported in the Optiplex, so use unregistered RAM. The last thing is to remember that most Xeons don't have onboard video, so be sure you're using an add in GPU when working on them. Good luck and thanks for watching!

      @@EscoTech Good to know, I will keep trying with the Xeons. The one I tried that didn't work was a E3-1246 V3. I do happen to have an E3-1226 V3, I'll see if that works any better. Is there any specific BIOS revision I should be trying? I currently have A18. In the meantime, I've found that Precision T1700 motherboards are a drop-in replacement for the Optiplex 7020/9020, and do seem to work well with the Xeons.
      Also, you might be interested to know that the Hyper TX3 EVO works well using your mounting technique (installed one this morning.) They are not very expensive new (less than $40 on Amazon).
