Lol... I was 13 dancing a pointe solo. I did a cambré back, and my tutu strap snapped leaving me totally exposed in front of the entire competition audience. Mortifying. I kept dancing (holding up my tutu) until someone stopped my music and said I could come back later to try again 😂☠️

A girl who was doing the harlequin in nutcracker actually had a black and white costume and the black legwarmers were part of it. We didn’t get to have a costume rehearsal so she couldn’t have known...one of the leg warmers started falling down during the performance and it was actually scary because it got to the point where it was covering the box of her pointe shoes. Luckily, she was a smart girl and managed to kick them off into the wings during a jump I think. Nobody from the audience noticed but everyone backstage including my ballet teacher were scared and horrified. She could’ve seriously injured herself if she slipped on pointe.

Ballroom dancer here! I have a few... two are mine, one is my ex partner's.
1: I was dating my dance partner at the time and we got into a HUGE argument in the wings about something unrelated to dancing. I was so pissed I forgot the routine. It was supposed to be a sensual rumba. Luckily, in ballroom you can follow your partner and improvise. People who didn't know didn't know, but people who knew us could tell we'd had a screaming match backstage.
2: My partner and I were dancing quickstep at a pretty big showcase in a well-known theater. For context, if a woman forgets her part she can follow and fake; this doesn't work as well for the guy since he's tub lead, but he could improvise. My partner entirely forgot the choreography and the stage was too small to improvise. I had to whisper every step into his ear and we were slightly late on every step.
1: Before the partner from story 1 started dancing with me, he danced with another girl who preferred to just wear embellished bra tops for Latin
He forgot to take his watch off at a competition, and it got caught on a tassel on her bra without either of them knowing. When he opened his arm, her bra ripped off 😳

I live in a small town and we where doing a charity concert. one of the dancers hurt her ankle the day before the show and was unable to dance so we had to completely re arrange all the formations, we had something that was half decent by the time we had to go on stage. to set the scene the room was filled with old ladies. The act before us went off stage the curtains closed at the lights went out and where meant to come back on when the curtains opened. THEY DIDN'T. we performed our entire tap dance in the dark on an extremely slippery stage, apart from it being dark the dance went perfectly. 2 of the boys in this dance where doing a dance of their own right after and had a 30 second quick change (the time it took for the mc to introduce them) they started to get changed when we heard over the mc that the old ladies where demanding that we did it again, so they got back in the costume for the group dance they sorted out the lights and we went to go on stage. after many issues with the music starting and stopping or glitching out completely we finally went on. as we where coming on stage I trod on the curtain at the back of the room and fell flat on my bum, I got up and continued to dance only for our music to stop half way through I became so flustered that I went to the old formation at times. we completed the rest of the dance with only the noises of our shoes. after we came off stage the owner of another local studio came up to me saying I was the reason that the lights went out and the music didn't work all because I fell over. happy ending my dance teacher shouted everyone lunch at the fanciest local restaurant to thank us for handling the situation so maturely.

On the very last night we were all on stage taking our bows, and me being the youngest was right at the end of the line, and the curtain came down on my head. I was so embarrassed, but the audience thought it was really cute and I got a few cheers from the crowd!

I once got to the theatre and realised I’d left the shoes I needed for Act 1 at home. Had to drive home and got back to the theatre, literally ran through stage door as overture was ending. Still had to do hair and make-up and get into costume and be on stage for the opening of act 1 scene 2. Got on stage in costume, with fake lashes and lipstick, hair not done as per my character but at least with a hasty ribbon tied, with said shoes on. Had to run back to dressing room between a scene to curl my hair and finish make up. Stage manager was NOT impressed. And that was the performance my agent came to watch. And I ran through the parking lot towards the stage door as she was running from her car to the theatre door and she saw me sans make-up, costume and hair 30 seconds before the theatre doors closed. AND I got a speeding fine for my rushed drive back home for the stupid shoes.

I was 8 years old and we had to do a recital as butterflies. The costume creator failed in understanding a group of 5-9-year-olds should not have chiffon wings on a leotard and antenna headbands. Why? It does sound cute - until they do the first time doing a turn and get entangled with everyone else wings. lol, the dance called for us to go under someone's arms and then turn and do it again with someone else. Let's just say the dance was a scream for the audience and the choreagrapher chased the costumer across the theater with a piece of chiffon & one of the headbands and made them experience it. lol

The rest of us were ready onstage waiting for her and the tech crew started the music and opening the curtain before the girl with the quick change was ready. Top 3:
    3) In dress rehearsal, in a dance where we were wearing street shoes, mine came off on a kick and hit the girl in front of me in the back of the head. For the performance, she insisted on checking my laces before we went on stage LOL
    2) In a group dance, the music cut out part way through. Someone in the group started counting out loud and we kept going. When the music came back on, we were still on the music!
    1) I was in a ballet that was only two people, me and a partner, and there were 2 quick changes in it for the girl. We performed it successfully many times. The second quick change was literally just back in to the first costume to come back on stage for the last 30 seconds of the piece, do like 2 steps, pose and then take the bows. I missed the cue and I just stormed out of the wings and back to the dressing room, I was so mad at myself, and left my partner on stage to take the curtain call alone! The stage manager had to come find me and drag me back to the stage to bow. I didn't want to at all, I was so embarrassed and mad at myself for missing it.

I went to a school where the finale of each show, the dancers of the entire school would all do one big dance. So the oldest group would get on stage and start the dance, and as the dance evolved, the younger groups would come in until everyone was on stage. So once you get on, you don't come off, which meant that as the song would progress, the choreography would be easier and easier, as the levels of those coming on stage would be lower. Each group would form a row and the the 4 year olds would be in the first row and everyone would be doing the same choreography which meant that us teenagers at the time would be doing the same boring waves or whatever the 4 year olds where doing. My class got bored and literally stopped dancing. The problem was, do I stop or do I continue, as at one point I was the only one in my row that did not stop. And when they stopped dancing, they didn't assume a nice position to stay in, instead they were slouched and really looked annoyed.

Once I was at a dance show and one of the older girls was doing a duet with a boy. We only had an hour left before it started and they were rehearsing the dance backstage. He threw her in a lift and she was supposed to land on two feet but then she slipped, sprained her ankle and got her hair stuck in one of the buttons on his shirt. Long story short she went to hospital and I had to replace her in the dance as I picked up choreography really fast but that meant I only had a 40 second change from my contemporary number. she came back from the hospital and picked up my leotard for the duet because she thought it was hers. We had to send the next number on and try find my leo. Luckily we went on stage at the end and we got first place for the over 12’s ballerina duet partners. As a result of this, they moved me into a more technical group at the studio and I went in more older and harder performances. I also got a solo against one of the older dancers and I came 2nd whilst she came 3rd. They were so proud of me that I became the head dancer in all the upcoming group performances. All I can say from this day is ty to the girl who broke her ankle. 😂

My favourite is this one - very classical, slow, melancholic Sylphide-like mood to Jean Sibelius' "Valse Triste" - the stage in blue light, all of us in romantic white tutus, and I had the solo part.
It was our turn directly after the break and I remember I saw the children playing on stage as the curtains were down, although they weren't allowed to, but before someone could get them off, they dropped something, don't know any more what.
I forgot about them and concentrated for my solo. I did a long sequence of bourres en pointe and ended up in front of the group and prepared for a great arabesque turn. To my misfortune, I managed to hit exactly the spot where the children dropped - whatever they dropped - during the break, so halfway round my turn, I felt my foot - en pointe - slipping away, so before I could even panick I catched my fall by dropping out of the pose - which didn't look very romantic :D
To make things worse, I got instantly mad for a second and lost it - and shouted a big loud "SCHEIßE" right into the Audience (that's german for "shit" ) - OK I managed to go on with the coreography in a second afterwards and pull myself back together, but this was maybe the best way to completely destroy the nice calm and romantic mood of the whole piece :D
That's now more than 25 years ago but I still have to laugh about that.
My second favourite one was during a pas the trois - more modern piece on Elvis Presley songs but en pointe and it was a lot of fun. There were three groups with each a boy and two girls on stage and my group was on one side - suddendly I realised that the other girl from my group was too early on the music - and I tried to tell her as unremarkably to the audience as possible that she has to slow down a bit - while I did a slow soutenu. Unfortunately, I concentrated so much on trying to tell her that I wandered off, towards the curtain, and - as I finished the turn, everything was pitch black because I managed to wrap myself up in that damned thing :D - my tutu must have come too close, so it sticked to the fabric and dragged the curtain with it, all around me.
That stuff might be embarrasing when it happens, but now, I still have to laugh about that and myself - shit happens, just take it easy ...

I was in a short dance that was so simple that I didn't take it very seriously. That was the only time I blacked out on stage for two steps. It was a group dance so I picked it up quickly. Big lesson for me: always take it seriously and concentrate even if I feel the dance is "too easy".

Once the music stopped about 2/3 of the way through the Snow in the nutcracker and we just kept going kind of humming it to ourselves. On one hand I'm super proud of us for still being super together and in sync and not stopping, but it was also super awkward because the silence meant you could hear all the noise and buzzers from the volleyball game in the gym next door to the auditorium

I was put into a Cinderella show ONE WEEK before opening night because someone dropped out last minute. I had three rehearsals to learn everything and it was going so well, until the last night when they filmed the show and I got the timing wrong, so while the entire corps was running to a line in the middle off the stage, I ran to the back of the stage ready for some grand jetes and just stood there in the corner facing the back wall for a solid 10 seconds as if I was a toddler being punished 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I managed to nip off stage and join the far end of the line, I was meant to be in the middle, so when you watch back the DVD, they just did a really awkward zoom on the first two dancers so they couldn't tell I wasn't there, so embarrassing!

  • @anne-catherineeimer-ruegg9882

My worst stage story has to be when I was in a group number that was super synchronous and geometric. I must have practised it a 1000 times and hadn't gotten it wrong for weeks. However, the number started off with a double turn and I somehow (to this das I don't know how I even managed that) turned the opposite direction of everybody else. It is the weirdest thing when you turn and everybody's faces turn towards you. The worst part was it being a double turn so I knew it would happen again. My brain stopped working for the rest of the number as I was embarassed like never before, but luckily my body remembered the choreography and the rest went well xD

I was a soldier and Arabin corps in The Nutcracker last year. In my studios Arabian, there are eight girls in the corps, four on one side, four on the other. And we hold these really long scarves that go all the way across the stage. My friend, and the girl who held the scarf with me, were in the second row. Our costumes have these coins all over them and they have head pieces made out of the same faux coins. When we went to our knees to bring the scarf to the ground, one of the coins was in just the right place to stab my knee. It hurt so bad that I got up to early making my friend think it was time to get up. At the same time my friends sleeve got cought on her headpiece that was bobby pinned to her head, and she couldn't get her sleeve off, so she ripped her headpiece off bobby pins and all! Not to mention it was Friday the 13th! So yeah that's my story hope you enjoyed :)

We kept dancing, but then heard yelling from the wings to come off. Music is still off. Then it came on like 16 counts earlier and we tried to nonchalantly walk back out and took it from where the music was playing.

1 - We had sticks in a dance and had a little bit where we'd sword fight and during the concert one of the sticks snapped in half and flew across the stage. These weren't flimsy either they were proper strong pieces of wood.
2 - During a musical I was in we had three on stage injuries: A dislocated knee (to one of the main characters), a dislocated hip (to featured ensemble) and a sprained ankle (featured dancer) and all the injuries happened in consecutive performances.
3 - I had a tap duet and my entrance was run on and jump. During the performances when I landed the jump I just fell over

    Late comment.
I'm not a ballet dancer (used to for like a year when I was six).
I do classical Indian dance (bharatanatyam).
We wear these anklets with bells around our ankles (kinda like those Christmas bells) when performing so we can hear our beats clearly when dancing, otherwise it's hard for us to hear it onstage with the blasting music and audience reactions, etc.
During my first solo debut performance, and during the biggest dance piece (which was 25 minutes long non-stop), the anklet on my right foot came so loose in the beginning of the 2nd half of the long dance, it'd practically fallen off. And the thing is, I only noticed it in the last 5 minutes of the dance, so I had to dance around it and make sure not to step on the loose ribbons otherwise I'd trip flat. My mom, teacher, grandparents were horrified and worried that I'd injure myself. Somehow, I made it through the whole piece without anything happening.
And we tied the anklets much more tighter for the rest of the show lol.

This is musical theatre rather than dance per se, but I know an actress whose pants fell down during a number where the character was standing on a chair, AND in a heavy rubber mask so she couldn't see! :O :O :O And it was an ensemble number so she couldn't just improvise and make a thing out of it; she had to pretend it hadn't happened and keep going while trying not to trip.
