This was really good. Dozens of good bits of info in 30 minutes. Watched it twice.

Thanks for this! Another great tip that I picked up, Cookie, 16:09 - mast foot further forward -> board planes at a slower speed. Been struggling to plane with any control whatsoever. Always feels like I'm just heading straight to the scene of the accident 🫣 Today I put the mast foot forward 2cm from the center and, bingo! Planing under control. Wind came up and I was overpowered as well as knackered, otherwise I might have made it to the footstraps. Next time, hopefully 🤞whenever that will be. I first watched this in early July and today was the first time back on the water. Only ever seems to be windy during the week here - LOL. BTW the previous gem was "sheet out to sheet in". Those two tips plus getting the sail set up well enough to trust it in the shifty and gusty conditions at my local spot have made a world of difference. I'm sticking with my Starboard Go 161, btw. I thought maybe it was too windy for it which is why the nose was skittery but apparently not. It was just me! Could listen to you guys talk all day. My favourite coach and my favourite windsurf adventurer!

      Thank you so much!
Maybe next year you can make it to Vass?! 1 week coaching with me and you’ll be flying! 🤩

@@Cookiesports Yeah, I really should, mate. There's something to be said for the self-discovery approach to learning stuff, but it's a slow and frustrating process with something like windsurfing where there are so many variables to try to control and hence so many things that can prevent you from progressing. I'll start saving my pennies 😉

About getting back upwind after shooting downwind. Imagine being at a gusty smallish lake. Then you shoot downwind for about a minute, and try to go upwind for an hour. This is what it feels for me, would you agree?

Haha! I have an on board test demo of the new ACZ coming out very soon. You’ll see exactly what you’re describing happening, one full speed run, then a few minutes of me working my way back up wind talking about the Sail feeling before going for it again!

Interesting topic! I sail for flow and riding the terrain rather than speed. Your comments on spending time to tune gear is often omitted but it can make a massive difference in the energy to sail and I can improve on that, thanks for the tips. I don't ride with an uphaul as most of my boards are insufficient volume. I also hate the way they can hook on foot straps during waterstarts. Only when foiling do I use an uphaul... cheers! Great podcast.

Thanks for watching. I’ve always got an uphaul… but pulled very tight again the mast to stop it getting in the way- best to have it there encase the wind drops and I need it… or occasionally the sail falls in a way that’s easier to up haul the water start!

I feel better now. 😄.I sail freerace gear - a big sail on a smaller board and my average heart rate for a 1.30-2hr session can be 160-170bpm hitting 192..Good to hear Nils say going fast is more cardio. Sometimes I hardly have the energy to gybe when the heart is at 170+

Great topic and nicely done. I'm always looking to improve on speed. The trouble with going straight downwind in my location is, if the wind is in the wrong direction or too light, I can't be sure how far I went without any watch. I can count out the seconds in my head for a fairly accurate nautical mile with a few landmarks going on a beam reach or close hauled pretty often though.
The ideas about stickiness of the board and mast base farther back for speed are good. I tend to put the mast base in and then only change the boom height and harness line positions only, but maybe I'm missing out on a few knots there.

To become faster I think the best advice is to use the gps. Because often when you are really pushing on the edge and it feels super fast, is not when you are going the fastest. Only with the gps do you see that it was the relatively smooth run that was the fastest.

Landmarks can be a pretty decent gauge too, or seeing if you're going faster or slower than the competition :P

Great podcast, going to watch it more and more. I also have a bit of feedback if you don't mind Cookie.. I think it would be easier on the eyes if you are both in one screen or if you both are equal of size in the screen. I've noticed my eyes and brain is having trouble figuring stuff out ;). It's like you have to watch 2 paintings at the same time. Just my 2 cents. :)

Well, I am most interested in turns for sure, but once I start measuring, I hope to think about speed too. I guess I'm even more interested in early planing, because who wants to slog around for forever just to get 1 or 2 high speed runs?

      🤔
I like just cruising about and playing… but I also enjoy the challenge of going faster. Versatility makes for a better rider! 🤩
