France’s Romain Cannone has had the Games of his life by beating world champion Hungary’s Gergeley Siklosi in the final of the men’s individual épée at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. The 24-year-old rank outsider, who was making his Olympic debut, took command of the contest from the start by going 2-0 up before world ranked number one, Siklósi, scored a point. The final result was 15-10.

To make this achievement even more amazing, look at the world rankings of the people he beat: he beat 9th ranked Limardo, 7th ranked Verwijlen, 2nd ranked Bida, 3rd ranked Reizlin, and finally 1st ranked Siklosi. He could not have had a more difficult route, and yet he pulled it off. He beat the entire World Top 3 in a row.

Wow what an accomplishment talk about a Cinderella story
@@user-co4pf5dg4b please shut up
He went to my club. he wasn’t supposed to go, the guy who was third on list didn’t pass the drug test so cannone went instead. Also he never got any international medals, so winning the Olympics was a pretty big step
I don’t know much about fencing but Cannone seems very feisty. He’s quick, jumpy, nimble, cat-like, maybe a little more unpredictable? Fascinating to watch
Visit our channel. Here we show the reviews of the Combined Games on Kydarting. A new kind of sport invented this year.
yep, Cannone’s style is very soft, elegant and fast, there are fencer like him, Minobe or Mohamed Elsayed and other fencer that have a different style like Pizzo. Firstly it depends by the grip that they use, Cannone use french grip
Yeah, he’s so quick and he can lunge pretty far. That would explain how he beat all the top three best fencers.
@@zedasy738 So much more to cannone’s play than him being quick, such an intelligent competitor
His prediction is insane
I just love how they came out to Imperial March. There's actually a lightsaber form in Star Wars very reminiscent of fencing.
You the other way around…they designed some lightsabers after real…well sabers…
Count dooku used fencing I think 😁

I just came from that video
Form 2: Makashi. The sith even invented a device called the 'light foil' which was used specifically for fencing.
Match begins at 7:45
They dance and touch tips until 8:33 ballet 😂🤣
thx
Thanks
i love that little move Cannone does where he tucks himself into a little ball and goes for the legs, makes him a much smaller target and takes advantage of his opponent's sturdier build and height.
Ducking makes your hand closer to their feet as well, it’s much easier to go for leg touch whilst ducking. The down side is that you’re very committed then.
just watch a Korean drama related to fencing now im here, kinda fun to watch because the footwork somehow similar to Karate
Na hee do 😂
Na hee do and ko yu rim 😂
Lol me too
Yup same
wkwkwk me too
The first hit is so nice. It almost looked effortless
Amazing come-from-nothing story aside, Cannone's style was so exciting to watch. Quick movement and outside-the-box tactics. Even just watching his footwork alone and comparing it to his opponent's -- it's as if he's a rabbit or something.
I thought he was a insect especially with his mask
10:37 is the single most innovative play I’ve seen in sports history
i belive this technique is called just ducking lol i dont watch a lot of fencing but i belive its not common but sometimes used
@@enzojules4735 Fair lol. I basically see fencers duck, whether I’m playing or watching, so it was definitely a surprise
it's the meanest timed counterattack I've ever seen is what it is
balling up and going for the chest is pretty common fare in foil where it's a counterattacking strategy and it's more effective because target's only the chest... pulling it off here was ballsy
@@joephilips7265 in france we call this "petit bonhomme" translate in english "litlle guy"
Gergely Siklosi made the greatest Olympic entrance ever
Everytime I watch fencing I'm surprised how short the match is, 3 bouts of 3min and 15 points happens so fast, 16min total with time-offs. I wish there was more
You should watch foil and sabre, they’re often done in the first 3 minutes
@@UnkleRiceYo sabre just jump at each other, first hit wins. Epee/foil are far better to watch.
Just watch whole tournament it lasts for like 5 hours
@@beanspud88😂
Wait.... Did they just play the Darth Vader theme from start wars?!?!?!?
It's customary in fencing to do so
It is?
I believe that is called The Imperial March. While lightsaber duels may be the most iconic fencing exhibition of our age, I consider this to be beneath the dignity of the Olympics.
cringe
yes start wars
10:37 is sooooo cool 🔥
22:29 Coach over here sounding like the Werehog losing a life.
Anyway, while I was rooting for Siklosi (due to the green color of his helmet), Cannone did an impressive job, here. His style can best be described as aggressive and lightning-fast, and the fact that he won a Gold Medal at his *first* Olympic Games is an incredible feat!
Thank you for uploading. I'm waiting for foil fencing.
Sammeeee
Hear, hear! I was at work every time fencing was on, so this is the first I'm seeing of any of it.

i watch twenty five twenty one and suddenly got curious and here i am ! 😂
11:26 this is the only time I've seen someone catch Cannone in timing on his footwork. Incredibly impressive from Siklosi.
Hope Tokyo 2020 will inspire many to become athletes. 🇯🇵
Rio 2016 inspiried me. So it can happend

London 2012 inspired me
Bruh I have nowhere to learn fencing with.

Kitchen knives?
Seems like Siklosi kind of lost his touch near the end. Rushing his touches, lunging from too far away or without proper preparation. Obviously, incredible performances from both of them though. Certainly two of the best in the world.
Wondering if it's fatigue but probably not given level of competition
@@thecheekychinaman6713 Oh, fatigue is definitely a possibility. The days leading up to the finals is incredibly stressful. Not just physically, but mentally too. Nerves, weariness from continuous concentration, and of course muscle exhaustion all play huge parts, especially towards the end of a competition.
Visit our channel. Here we show the reviews of the Combined Games on Kydarting. A new kind of sport invented this year.
Funny thing was that Cannone was a replacement opponent for Daniel Jenent who failed a drug test (Cannone had also never won a medal in international tournaments before this too)
@Micah Eiber Things aren't always that simple, conditioning is a thing. There are guys way bigger than you who are faster, can run longer periods of time than you.
I thought Darth Vader would appear from the dark with his lightsaber and started to slay every other competitor
Real sword fight 🤺: takes a few seconds
Movie main fight scene🍿: takes a few minutes
Anime main fight scene: takes 50 to a hundred episodes
That’s not a real sword fight it’s a sport
@@labibhasan3239 But could you beat them, if it was life and death. I would say no. I spent 2 or 3 hours at the dojo 6 days a week for a decade and they are so much faster than me. The rapier is probably the ultimate melee weapon, and these men are masters of their craft.
Thank you very much Olympic Channel. Been waiting for this. Please upload the rest, thank you.
10:46 that was a very impressive doge he did
I think this year's Olympics has been an eye opener for us Indians as we Indians always used to focus on studies first and ignore sports....now sports culture is developing 🎂

Who’s here after watching Twenty five twenty one? 😂❤️
These athletes are so talented! i could only dream to get to this level..
What a wonderful match. Romain is a beast. The footwork and leaping dagger is a gift from his ancestors. Enjoyed.
This is my first time watching fencing,. though I don't know much about it, I think I really enjoy this game,🥰🥰
Who else here watching fencing for the first like me 🤔🤔
None
Me!!! Watching because I’m trynna learn fencing and realized that it’s such a cool sport!
It's so cringe
Épée is my favorite kind of fencing. It can get so spectacular.
Legends actually played the imperial march in the background
That was incredible much love from Ghana
I love how nerdy our sport is- Olympic final and Star Wars is playing in the background 😂😂
Matt Easton of Scholagladatoria needs to watch this. He keeps going on about how epee's short timeout duration means that epee fencers will somehow charge towards each other recklessly and end up doing double hits, were it not for the short timeouts. Yet most of the hits here were not reckless, and clean, unlike other fencing weapons...
Had my first epee tournament today, not exactly the Olympics but still fun
Video starts at 7:30
Hero
Do you know why there was such a long delay?
This is why I love being an epee fencer!
it’s amazing how hungarian fencer’s successful hits are on the same spot🔥
Would you please upload the men individual foils quarter final in between Cheung Ka Long of Hong Kong and the ROC fencer ? 15-14. Thanks so much 🙏

Whoever decided that the Imperial March would be the walkout music deserves a beverage of their choice
That first flick hand hit was crazy
Cannone's movement is awesome!
just here after watching Twenty-Five Twenty-One
Sameee na hee dooo
it's really funny that the official olympics fencing finals have imperial march cut aways
Why is the cameraman so focused on that watch ._.
Judges really testing the contestants patience lol
Amazing match. I hope I get see Cannone compete again in his homeland.
A fencer's eye view camera would be amazing if they could implement a camera light enough it wouldn't have much of an impact on the match
Sana maka qualify din philippine athletes sa fencing🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
Are we just going to ignore the imperial march playing in the break?
I'm here after watch kdrama🤗
The french keep flying off the stage😂
now cannone is a world champion and world rank number 1
Any reason for the imperial music that's playing or that just a normal thing in Olympic Fencing?
the reason is that Japan is strange
@@krszam4112 japan respects the memes
It's grand and regal & the world is a theater for the accomplished . . . something like that - you know, Imperial🔱
No it’s normal it hapened offen, when I was competiting we had that kind of music for entry
Énorme le canonier
Oh… I miss épée fencing so much! :(
Then? Whats stopping you from redoing it
Would you recommend starting with foil or épée fencing? Beginner who has to decide, thank you!!!
@bellahu5331 i'd say foil. It really helps for precision and movement. Epee is more fun on my opinion though
How much has the equipment gear have been upgraded. Had watched 25 21 and was amazed by the upgrade over the time
it was about time they went wireless
As always ¡Vive la France! The best in the west!

I can't even the Darth Vader theme song played to introduced the fencer , that so cool. I wanna be introduced with that song too hahaha.
Cannone working those ankles and toes
Idk fencing, but it looks like Canonne was struggling because of reach? So then he used evasive footwork and split second timing to get points?
Olahraga ini membutuhkan konsentrasi dan gerakan yang sangat cepat. permainan yang bagus.
Had to slow down the vid to half speed to spot some of the hits. Very nice.

Bro is that Star Wars music ?
This dodge is beautiful 10:46
10:57 just leaving this here so I can listen to this absolutely perfect sound on repeat
I'm here after watch twenty five twenty one
Me watching this after watching k-drama ‘Twenty Five-Twenty One’ 😃
Wow Olympic strips are bougie I’m used to fencing on a leash. It must feel so light to not have any restriction
Wireless boxes are quite common now. Personally I still prefer wired. Wireless always seems to go wrong when I use it.
@@genericcommenter1267 idk why but, wired just has a charm to it
Great sport.🛡️🤖💯

Stay for the imperial march then jump through equipment issues to 7:30
I wanna see the light Sabre discipline.
get back to your studies, you phony!
It actually exists
Can we get the Badminton Men's Doubles Bronze medal match please? Tq :)
Fencing used to be a boring sport, at least to me. But now we have LED and wireless technology. What a great time we live in.

I like how there is a Star Wars theme playing in the backround
Here because of Na Hee Do
Has it always been star wars theme music??
I used to fence Foil. I once held an Épée, and almost dropped it because I was not ready for the weight.

that was so out of place
Very elegant
I have a question, can u throw ur sword on fencing? I dont know so much about this sport but every time i watch a combat I always wonder it
No. The fencing blade is connected by wire to the end cord, you would probably break it and plus I’m pretty sure it’s against the rules
@Pablo= You cannot throw your sword, it’s against the rules (and besides it would make you helpless if your throw were parried).
However there are two sorts of handles for épée ; the first is “poignée droite” (straight handle) in which you can change the position of your hand on the handle ; the second is “poignée crosse” (contoured handle) in which your fingers are in a grip over the contours of the handle.
With a “poignée crosse” you have more strength when you beat your opponent’s blade or oppose his beat, but the “allonge” of your épée (i.e. elongation from your chest to the point of the sword) can’t be modified.
With a “poignée droite”, you can shift you hand on the handle so that the “allonge” can be increased or decreased by a few centimeters (but obviously there are no contours, so your grip of the handle has less strength).
It is a matter if choice for fencers to use what handle suits them best. The more ‘physical-minded’ prefer the “poignée crosse” and the more ‘tactical minded’ prefer the “poignée droite” which can give a few critical centimeters of “allonge”.
But anyway, a “poignée droite” fencer will only change the position of his hand on the handle during a preparation phase, or during a lull in the assault. Within an action, the hand will keep a firm grip on the handle!
-- •
I’m not very well versed on the subject but I’m pretty sure throwing the weapon is not allowed. In any case it would be disadvantageous as you would be vulnerable while attempting to recover your weapon and stance
Awesome music
