Friday Fun - Synth Jam Korg Minilogue and Mutable Instruments Clouds

- This week in our occasional series where we pair synthesizers, modules or FX for a musical interlude, we use the Mutable Instruments Clouds - we have a special version which our Sonic TALK viewers bought in celebration of our 500th episode and had a custom faceplate made for it. Ours is called Fulsome Clouds. its an interesting unit which allows you to take sounds recorded into the input buffer, and apply granular operations to it, and sending the results into a lovely reverb.
We pair that with the Korg Minilogue - the first affordable analogue poly which we reviewed when it came out. The Minilogue is a surprisingly capable instrument for the money.

You're not old, Nick. You're vintage!!! And. I'm saying this with the deepest admiration!!
I say YES to "not very current " beats !!
The Minilogue and Mutable Instruments Clouds sounded great .
I love those vids where you noodle w/ synths. Soooooooo much better than talking 'bout it in a podcast for an hour. :-)
i really like how you freeze the machines and then play along whats there. its obvious that Clouds delivers for this (thanks to its dedicated freeze button), but you did similar things in other videos too and i really like this approach! its such a really nice way to make so much out of just so little.
dont fear youre out-of-date Nick! you were voted the top-most influencer of MusicRadars Poll in 2017 for a reason. you entertain us, you educate us - and you show your skills in music technology pretty much everytime you put your fingers on any machine that you have on the table. and lets not forget: you explain stuff in a way that we all can follow along - novice and professional alike! not everyone can do this. be proud of your talent and your skills! you are an established person here on CZcams. never forget this ;-)
Man you are amazing also! Beautiful words Over there.
Damn nice Nick, and now you know we all want to hear a friday fun session full of your beats, c'mom do that for us!
3:24 wicked mate. Sounds lovely. Take me to the clouds.
I just wanna say, I wanna hear your out-of-date old man beats.
Robert Humphrey I just want to know what an "old man" beat sounds like. Dude, that beat was hella grumpy! And sick!
Being an out-of-date old man, I can tell you that we consider ourselves amazingly fortunate just to get reasonably steady beats in the cardiac musculature.
sad @@ConwayBob
@@DRZADV -- Just kidding. My heart's fine. ♥️
Yes please. What once was old is new again. You might become he new got beat maker
Clouds is available as a free VST for those with . no modular.
@Chris Lindsay It looks amazing to me! Price is is pretty high but I think worth it. Im not able to spend the money atm. To me it seems like a hardware version of Ableton's Granulator which I am in love with.
Goodness gracious are these lovely sounds. Thank you for sharing, sir!
so rich, so vibey sounding. absolute sound heaven!
minilogue = future classic
i felt this way when I bought it. Loved it ever since. My first real synth!
Just thought about this today. I own this synth for a couple years now I think? And I just realized it really is the jack of all trades, especially for a first synth.
I sold my og and miss it so much that I’m looking at an xd. It really is an instant classic
@@sholz124 Me too :) It's got a great cold-yet-warm sound pallete.
Feels like I'm floating on Fulsome Clouds, very dreamy. Thanks Nick.
Need more minilouge videos. That thing sounds sweet
first vid of yours i've come across. unbelievable man, great stuff
Full of fulsome flavours. Nice to see those beauties in action.
Well you sure sold me on Clouds. I think it and my A4 mk1 would play real nice together. Thanks, Nick!
Jeff Santana plus you should be able to send CV out of your A4, so you can control parameters on Clouds. Opens up a lot of possibilities that way!
Very nicely done! This video makes me miss my Minilogue... but at least I have TWO Clouds! ;)
Old or new it does not matter when it is enjoyable!
One of the best „MI Clouds“ performance so far!!
Beautiful sounds, love these Friday fun videos. Thanks!
As always, lots of fun. Keep them coming!
this is exactly how ive been using vcvrack with my minilogue , ill get you one day eurorack! one day!
Have you gotten into it yet? I'm looking at the Cre8Audio Nifty Case bundle right now.
@@mikeexits 2 years and 2 rackbrutes later xD
It's things like this that inspire me to experiment endlessly. Great demo of the gear.
WE WANT BATT BEATS
*clap clap clapclapclap
Damn I hope you recorded this as a track. It makes me feel a love
Sweet ambient noodlings! Have a fulsome Friday! :D
Nice the Clouds sounds great and just add so much depth.
Another good one, thank you Nick! Some parts of It remind me of JMJ's Oxygene part 3 (with the sustained chord drone and heavy bass underneath).
I love my Minilogue!
Epic atmospheres can be created with this pair! AWESOME Friday Fun! A+++++++++++++++++++
This was beautiful
No beats because I'm old.. LOL ! :D
Being into minimalist, ambient and drone stuff clouds was the firs of three modules I got, and was the reason I bought a eurorack in the first place.
Tnx for inspirational video.
Fantastic sounds.
Would be lovely to listen to a full album someday ;)
Hi Nick,
An ambient album please!
Many Thanks
Everyone xx
Plus 500
Yes! A thousand times yes! I literally came here to post this!
Nick... you should edit your Friday Fun sessions (audio only) so we can download a collection of them. Fade in and out so we have individual tracks. They are full of atmosphere. This one especially.
Glad to see you enjoying the fulsome clouds nick.
Lovely jam.
Made my Friday this, great sounds
The best beats are ancient they are called Euclidean strings. A guy named toussan has a great paper on it.
This is nicks calling! It reminds me of Brian Enos stuff but more intense and beautiful! Great performance Nick! No offense Brian! Peace Christo 🎶🎶🛸🛸👽👏🏻✌🏻🕺🐕🙏👍🏻🔦
Nick, really nice. I don't how you sort all this stuff, I really don't. You do a great thing. Thank you
Clouds is definitely the first module I will buy!
Don't you need a pedal/guitar or instrument module to change the audio signal coming out of the minilogue before you patch it to clouds? To change the signal to a suitable eurorack signal?
Wow love the freeze function
just picked up a cloud.. and while scanning through the many YT demos.. as every NB does the best
Nick, I like your beats. I'm tired of all the samey crap that's saturating every medium these days. You have a following because you are different, don't sell out.
well that was beautiful
Beautiful.
Loving that custom clouds! I could do with some ambient inspiration.
Un furieux must have pour les "lives" malgré les apparences. Ciao tutti ! 😑😀😆
Sounds great. Have the Clouds... all i need now is the Minilogue :P
this is so god damn good
Got a prologue review coming up by any chance? I’d say it definitely IS in the ballpark of the Rev 2 and then some IMHO - what says Nick after a play? ;)
Freaking incredible bud. 👌🏻
Another great combination
There is a harmonium deluxe feeling in this that is intoxicating! You need To release a new cd! Or whatever! Peace 🎶🎶🎶🎶🐕🐕🕺🛸🙏✌🏻👏🏻👍🏻🔦Christo
Awesome demo... its a pity is not 20min long at least... You totally should release some EPs or an album. In the meantime, it would be nice to have your NEUTRON review, Nick!!
8:15 so sick
What a legend
That sounds fantastic
This sounds amazing.
This is wonderful.
Nice. So you can use things like Clouds with external gear right off the bat? I want to build up a small modular rig to use alongside my Octatrack but really don't know where to start... This is neat; being able to process sounds without any other modules.
That is a cute little eurorack.
I recently got my hands on a DIY mutable clouds with parasites installed and tried plugging my korg minilogue into it like on this video but didn’t have the same results. It seems there is not enough gain coming from the minilogue to be loud enough for clouds plus I am guessing the output also needs to be at a correct level to make it usable. How did you have this hooked up? I would greatly appreciate some guidance on this as I really enjoyed the sounds you made with this setup and I would love to know how to set it up myself to get these incredible ambient sounds. You mentioned that the minilogue is going directly into the clouds and out of the clouds into the mix. Is there any other modules involved behind the scenes or adaptors to get the line levels from the minilogue to work?
Beautiful Nick 👌
Hi Nick, love your work. How current need beats to be?
This is great fun!!!
Lovely sounds Nick! Almost a little Vangelis moment there :-) And what a nice gift....
I love fun
This was awesome! I have an MS-20 Mini, but this synth seems to have way more creative potential and possibilities for my taste as a musician. I've got to get me a Minilogue!
Yea it just honestly depends on the artist i love my ms 20 and would never trade it do to all the patch points that only started making sense to me 2 years later once i got into eurorack. So my opinion is if you know your going to get into eurorack keep the ms20 it goes very well with euro and i use it all the time with my clouds module, but if you really just want to play chords i say trade the ms 20 on craigslist for the minilouge they come up all the time !!!
I bought one a year and a half ago and still use it at least once a week.
I love my MS-20 Mini too! It was my first synth and I plan on keeping it. They can be amazing instruments together with their unique differences. I'd have both lol.
Edgar Moreno Thank you! I definitely plan on keeping it.
Hello! Could you tell please, how you connect outputs of clouds with audio-interface?
Really good
@sonicstate I'm new to your channel...and i've never been more fascinated with this level of music before. being a modular virgin. I've done research through watching your uploads on this channel. And i personally feel i'm ready to tackle and experiment with mods. of course i want to start small. and that mod box is it? How can i build a box such as that? what all would i need?
Simple and massive!! ;-)
Mutable Instruments has stopped making Clouds. Too bad, it looks like so much fun.
You can run it on the vcvrack I think they released a software version of it
You can get it as a DIY and people make them and sell them to. Also you can get them secondhand, that's what I did. but it is expected that they will make a sort of replacement as they have done with Braids and make Plaits instead.
I bet you can get very similar results with some creative programming in the Octatrack, like micro sampling Rec/playback, tempo synced LFO etc to create and play back “grains” In a way.....I’m going to go try that right now 🤔
Awesome
Where can i find this small eurorack case Nick has?
Search for Doepfer A-100MC
I love it
Incredible jam! One of my favourites from you man :)
Made me think of the scene in the rain in Blade Runner 2049, this could slot in there no problem!
Sounds very Tycho-esque
Epic!
"Ha, *Fulsome* Clouds, haven't heard of that version, but with that title it seems like it was made in heaven for Nick..... Oh it was literally made specifically for him. Awesome."
omfg! this is the one!
Wow mine does not sound like this at all. Does it always need stereo out to work?
this was other worlds
Love your jams Nick , that part from 8th minute.. beautiful.
MI CLouds can do so much more, you need to make more jams with it, maybe use CV and gate- outs from minibrute 2 or Neutron to modulate Clouds in many ways, and use that attenuator between those connections! Would really love to hear another jam with clouds!
cheers mate, keep up the good work!
PS
Where's sonic talk this week?
Sounds great, Nick! Almost got a Boards of Canada feel this one :)
I have been tempted to buy a minilogue but an SOS review pointed out that it cant be used to control other synths (ie my Neutron) because the midi cc is messed up. Have Korg sorted this out?
I enjoyed this one quite a bit! I would love to do similar stuff with my minilogue, but am still a beginner and generally building up my knowledge base. Are there cheap alternative to the fulsome cloud that can do that of effect/control that isn't too hard to find?
Ableton Granulator. It's free if you have the full version of Ableton (not Lite).
Un furieux must have pour le "live", sans se fier aux apparences !😑😶😉
5:00 Starts to become Blade Runner-esque
“...... I’m old and my beats are not very current ....” hahaha....
Put that on Bandcamp right now with a blurry landscape photo and make yourself $124.00!
I just bought a second hand microclouds clone (because I watched this video hehe), and when I connect my minilogue the same way as in the video all I get is electric ground noise. When I connect my roland tb-3 there is no problem. I am using a 6,3 mm unbalanced jack connector (0,5 m long) plus a 6,3mm to 3,5mm jack adapter (also unbalanced). ¿What can I do to get rid of that noise? ¿different cable and no adaptor at all? ¿Or something else more tricky? BIG THANKS!!
now I wanna hear nicks beats :)
beautiful combo, where we can find this small case please?
It’s the Doepfer A-100MC
Very nice. Ha.
Funny to say that clouds production has been stopped
wow, almost like lorn
Amazing jam! Didn’t knew about Clouds - now I’m upset that it’s discontinued
