    I will never forget this fragment of this documentary. He played a few bars of Rachmaninoff's second concerto, whereas he never played it in public or recorded it. But he did record the third concerto three times. Rachmaninoff said Horowitz played the third one better than he did himself.

    Vladimir Horowitz was my great-grand uncle. I was told I met him once when I was very little (early 1970s), but I don't remember. Thanks for posting this.

    They call them "the last two romantics" - in 20 century Rachmaninoff and Horowitz were the same as in the 19-th were Chopin and Liszt

    She was the daughter of Toscanini, and was an accomplished musician in her own right.

      This is from the movie the last Romantic in which she says that she only got her fathers profile and not his musical greatness. She may have been good but we can't really tell because she never played professionally or anything because she did not want the pressure of the high standard her father set.

    I love how Horowitz looks to the casual observer (who isn't familiar with him) in his later years like a decrepit old man, but then he blows your mind with the beauty and delicacy of his playing.

    Rachmaninov was deeply influenced by middle eastern/Andalusian themes in his work, those double harmonic minor scales come up a lot

      Also he modulates from Minor to Phrygian (flamenco scale) in a couple of moments of the 1st and 2nd Symphonies which to the western ear may sound similar to the Double Harmonic. I truly love that touch.

    I could be wrong and maybe he was incredibly difficult but he always comes across to me as a nice person...which you really dont expect...he seems to have such little ego despite knowing what he was...not my favorite pianist but he was certainly amazing..

    There is a video of Princess Diana and Charles doing a state visit in Australia during the 80s and going to a conservatory where they ask if Diana can play the piano. And she sits down and plays this exact same part of Rach#2 as Horowitz here
