The Role of Diet vs. Exercise in the Obesity Epidemic

  • When it comes to obesity, which is more important: diet vs. exercise? Can weight be lost without exercise? The common explanations for the cause of the obesity epidemic put forward by the food industry and policymakers, such as inactivity or a lack of willpower, are not only wrong, but actively harmful fallacies.

When I sat down to write How Not to Diet (nutritionfacts.org/how-not-to...) I knew this “what triggered the obesity epidemic” was going to be a big question I had to face. Was it inactivity-just kids sitting around playing video games? Was it genetic? Was it epigenetic-something turning our fat genes on? Or was it just the food? Were we eating more fat all of the sudden, more carbs? More processed foods? Or were we just eating more period, because of bigger serving sizes or just snacking more? Inquiring minds wanted to know.
This is the first in an 11-video series to answer this question, which I originally released in a 2-hour webinar earlier this year. If you can’t wait and want to get all of the videos at once, check out the webinar digital download here (drgreger.org/collections/down....

@Peter Rabitt I might have misunderstood your premise (not being sarcastic) - do you think a high carbohydrate diet and running are bad combinations for good health? I know the Kenyan diet is approx 76% carbohydrate (folks like Kipchoge). I guess you believe good quality carbs are a key aspect of a healthy diet as you're posting on this channel.

@Peter Rabitt I thought so, me too. I run approximately 50 to 70 mpw (well I did before the lock down) and I operate so much on a WFPB diet with good quality carbs. I clearly feel less inflammatory aggrevation that manifests as injuries or colds, flu. I tried the keto thing a few years back and kept finding myself needing to go and lay down from a lack of energy.

@vv n Appreciate it. It is still bothersome how this is simply not first-line treatment plan in this country. It becomes a problem at the education level ultimately because this is not taught in med schools. It is taught sparingly in chiropractic school (where I went), but even then I had to further my education with a Master's in Nutrition to really feel comfortable with it. Until there is a curriculum change I fear this will not happen.

Go Vegan, eat more plants and vegetables and get some exercise daily.

Bike to work, school or for fun. Time to get the kids out of the mini van and on to a bicycle.

A couple of years ago I used to train kickboxing. It was the most intense training I have done. It was about 2 hours each training, and when it was over I was soaked in sweat. I calculated that one session was about 1200 calories burnt.
The same amount of calories can easily be consumed by consuming pizza with soda.
So let's say you eat fast food three times a day. Would you be able to do intensive workout 6 hours a day to compensate? I guess the answer is no for most people.

In my limited experience the easiest way to lose weight is through consistent low level exercise over an extended period of time, you know kind of like what hunter gatherers did, the modern lifestyle with excessive sedentaryness has always appeared to me to be 90% of the problem. I guess when they do research they’d be hard pressed to find a comparison group...

I have another 40 to go, but exercise was never the issue, because I've always been a fairly active person, walking tens of thousands of steps per day every single day. I only started strength training recently, and it's related to the diet, but not for the express purpose of burning excess calories, either.
