  • The X-Men Krakoan era is winding down and group editor Jordan White is addressing many of the cool elements set-up by Jonathan Hickman. According to White, they ignored everything that got people hooked in the first place because there were no long-term plans. This week White addressed key moments like Reed Richards whispering to Charles Xavier, the key Magneto retrieved from the ocean and all those redacted entires in House of X Powers of X. Many of which were portrayed as pivotal moments for the stories ahead. Wes and Dok recount many of the missed opportunities created during HoX/PoX and the early days of Krakoa. X-Men ignored everything cool Hickman set up in House of X Powers of X.

It never occurred to me that Hickman’s X-Men was meant to be the sequel to his Avengers run until recently. To think of what could’ve been if he was allowed to stay on is such a bummer.

Never has a series needed so desperately to get back to basics. This was already the case when Hickman took over, and I was disappointed to see he strayed further away from the basics than anyone ever had before, in the space of just 1 issue! Wouldn’t it be great to have the Xavier school in Westchester (and not Central Park or f--ing Limbo!!!) open for business again, teaching new mutants how to control their powers and policing mutants who misbehave, and doing what they can to get on with the ordinary folks of the world? It worked for the movies, it worked for the cartoon and it used to work just fine for the comics. Marvel comics seem determined to never get back there though.

I’m not sold it was just a few years. From my perspective Hickman’s run was a resurgence of X-Men, not a continuation of a glorious era for X-Men. So imo it’s more like X-Men had a chance to get back to former glory with Hickman, but instead was washed down the gutter. But then again, I don’t consider my self an X-Men fan anymore for a long time by now, so I may be a tinsy-winsy bit jaded here.

Cause I had the idea that Xavier before everyone died made one final copy of everyone. So a thousand years in the future the 5 mutants who eventually conquered the homo-novossima human find the bodies of the 5 in suspended animation and they resurrect the entire nation in the future. And that’s like the end of the story basically. Of course I had more but it’s sad we never follow up on this.

Turns out, the X-23 in the Vault didn't die, she aged 100 years and took on the monicker Talon. So she was the real X-23 actually. Then, Talon died. The real X-23 is dead! Nobody cares. Wolverine was soooo worried about X-23 being in peril in the Sabretooth War, but, she was a clone! A clone of a clone but still. But no, Marvel choose just moving on with all this shit and can't understand that you cannot make these corrupted characters play the heroes again. There's no more a single one moral person in that team anymore. While Marvel don't erase this dumb fanfic out the main 616 canon I never will read a new X-Men book again. The franchise is dead to me. The great message that Krakoa Era is leaving to us is that all the hate and prejudice in toward mutantkind always was justified because all them can be dangerous and homicidal individuals like Magneto.

Wow. The Krakoa era really IS the Lost of comic books. That is probably the single best way to describe what happened. Even in spite of all of the things Hickman tinkered with to set up his new status quo, you will never convince me that it couldn't have been one of the most interesting X-Men stories ever and the best thing the franchise has had since Remender's Uncanny X-Force if Hickman would have just written his own self contained and self-directed story like he did for every other book he's written for Marvel. MAYBE his grand collaborative idea for the line could have worked if he was surrounded by more competant and intelligent talent (only the work of a handful of them were worth anyone's time imo), but nope. They just wanted to bring Hickman in for the eyes and the sales pick-me-up so they could go right back to doing a different shade of the same aimless, stupid bullshit they were already doing before he showed up. I will always love HOX/POX for all of the cool ideas it set up, but the Krakoa era of X-Men and Hickman's tenure on the franchise will probably go down as one of the biggest wastes of potential in modern comic book history. Only the derailment of the DC Rebirth roadmap even compares imo, but even DC at least got 2-2.5 years of mostly decent comics out of it.

What's sad is Hickman is a high concept author that always executes and delivers on his concept. You can tell he was setting up something for the ages, that he really wanted to leave his stamp on X-men and have it go down as one of the all-time great X-men arcs.
But the company is run by greedy parasites. They latched onto the Hickman X-men, sucked it's blood, and left it weakened until Hickman gave up and left. They took and co-opted and subverted and used his history of well-received work to sucker both Hickman and the fans. They blew it.

You know, it's things like this that should be Marvel What Ifs. These ridiculous What If Miles or Venom were other heroes books are pointless. But something like this, an alternate Krakoan era where Hickman saw it to the end, would be a gangbuster miniseries What If.

Hickman should have stayed. He set up some great things with his run only for the other writers to shit on his work. That's why they don't need to change writers during a saga. Take pages out of Manga and keep a person on the whole saga and let them finish their story.

Storm having BP’s child… or any of the X-Men evolving and showing age, would’ve been nice. It’s weird that so few of the mutants have had kids… ESPECIALLY since Krakoa made it a law, and Most Storm and BP fans want them back together. Next time, just let Hickman cook.

That law was made on the fly by a character who was rerewritten to have always had mommy issues following a taunt made by his mother.
That plotline was done for shock value and had little to no interesting follow up as the consequences of that law were slipped under the rug after AXE vaporised the island where all the abandoned babies born from it (and whose parents are all faceless nobodies might I add) stayed behind.

The problem with Krakoa is that... There was no conflict. And that's ignoring the fact that Hickman killed the X-Men in universe. If you go read the process of how they 'resurrect' Mutants you'll quickly find out that these aren't actually the real ones, they're copies using imprinted memories from a backup hard drive. Hickman clearly didn't want to write X-Men. Back on topic, what WAS the threat that these cloned things faced? It just felt aimless and pointless, nothing Hickman created worked beyond saying 'This is the status quo'. The Hollywood Hacks fumbled the ball because none of the setup worked for any sort of story telling.

I personally wouldn't but if people are still interested in anything about this era,
Don't read everything after HoX/PoX and stop at Inferno.
If you only want to read things Hickman partook in writing, take breaks for X of Sword and, if it already took away most of your motivation, read online summaries.
And most importantly, do NOT buy any of these books : Pirate them or you'll go bankrupt AND be disappointed.
Wes and Dok mentioned the early one-shots that were at $5 each starring characters like Storm and Nightcrawler which ended up neither mattering or having these characters as the main ones in the books.
They weren't even exaggerating when they said Nightcrawler was pretty much guest-starring in a book with his name and face on the cover.

Yeah, and they waaaaay overused the Resurrection Protocols. It just totally cheapened the meaning of any deaths in the X-Universe. I think that it was Hickman’s way of just answering the cliche of why everyone keeps returning from death , but other writers used it as a crutch .

There's like 4-5 good issues of the Hickman X-Men title. The rest were bad or just filler nonsense to tie into whatever dumb crossover idea one of his charity hires proposed before they voted him off the island. And none of the "mysteries" he ever introduced were paid off at all. I would like to believe that he had some sort of plan for most or all of them, but it seemed like any time anyone else even poked around with any of those mysteries, they all got poisoned in a way that they were now unusable.
