  • It's set to be the biggest road construction project since the M25. A huge tunnel between Kent and Essex which should alleviate congestion on the Dartford Crossing. But environmentalists say it will create more traffic and pollution. Charlotte Wright reports.

      A few things need to be addressed here. a) two 5 lane tunnels will be cost prohibitive, it won't happen. b) it will be a DBFO, the idea being only the people who use the tunnel are the ones who should pay for it. Your Mk1 punter who lives in Leeds and only takes their car to the Tesco superstore shouldn't have to pay for a tunnel 140 miles away that only you use and has no direct benefit to them.
      Or do you want your income tax to go up by 6% to pay for the M4 Severn Crossing and the M6 Toll Road which I doubt you have ever seen, let alone frequent on a daily basis

      When the M25 was build they only made 3 lanes, 25 years later they increased it to 4, the upgrade cost more than the original construction and is a dogs dinner smart highway. Build it big now so it is future proof.
      The congestion in this area is beyond belief, 200 people slept in Ikea a few months ago as the bridge was closed! A high percentage of our GDP comes from the south east so when we have blockages the whole country is loosing money.

    @rxss6154 Před 5 lety +12

    Tbh it seems a little strange, when they got rid of the barriers thats when all the accidents started happening. Once something happens on the QE2 bridge the WHOLE network shuts down in Thurrock. A 15 minute drive from Grays to South Ockendon can take me well over 2-3 hours if their has been a serious accident on the bridge. Buses are cancelled and on one day i had to start my GCSE exams half hour later to allow enough time for students to come in. But why did this all happen once they got rid of the barriers and not before?
    Also, why we don’t want another crossing is because we was all told that once we paid the cost of the QE2 bridge off though the tolls it would be free to use, well the bridge got sold to a French company and we’re still paying for it!
    Pollution is already record high round Thurrock and the state of the towns we live in, we need that money invested elsewhere instead of on another bridge/crossing. But apparently there is no magic money tree according to Theresa May and her government.

    • @karlosbricks2413
      @karlosbricks2413 Před 5 lety +1

      well everyone knows a country that has its own currency does have a magic money tree, it's a matter of keeping inflation in check, I'll be honest, Motorways and roads everywhere are a mess, I got 2 punctures last year despite only racking up 4000 miles (all on paved roads), money spent to help the road network is probably useful, and to be frank, the ''local'' who want the road to be elsewhere really aren't solving anything as the next town along getting traffic is still congestion.The QE2 is congested so I can see why they would build another crossing, but yeah, selling to a private company is really not the way to go!

    • @rxss6154
      @rxss6154 Před 5 lety

      KarlosBricks true, the roads are awful, but why can’t that money be build in investing whats already there and THEN build something. I hope you claimed off the council for the damages to your car.
      Its like the A13, they spent months re-doing the whole thing and they put the speed limit to 50 mph when there is no need to.
      Us “locals” all know what going to happen with the crossing, we get all of the traffic trying to cross the river which then raises pollution, considering Thurrock is a deprived area. Yes it might bring economical boost but many companies around this area don’t rely on the bridge because traffic can be diverted either though one of the tunnels or people just go to the blackwall tunnel. To be honest it hurts the economy a little bit because when there is an accident either on the A13 or QE2 lakeside shopping centre is gridlocked and can take anywhere up to 4-5 hours to get out the place. Most people are opposed to the idea because of what the QE2 was like “it will be free after its paid for” “it will take a few years to pay it back then its free!” But its not. We’ve heard it all before and we was lied to, thats why we are suspicious of having another crossing in our area.
      Definitely true about the money though, however the government decides to put the money into the wrong things half the time

    • @karlosbricks2413
      @karlosbricks2413 Před 5 lety

      Fair enough, The whole situation with austerity and pretty much all transport south of birmingham is a mess, I take your point with the tolls, Governments have always been lax with keeping up promises. And I get your point on the congestion, Trouble is normally if there's a good alternative people will take it and give up driving for the other means such as trains, trouble is none of that other infrasture or price is very good so building more motorways will just increase the cars on the road, which is understandably bad for the local towns.
      If the government invested more in railway infrastructure and perhaps encouraging businesses to set up shop in slightly less busy cities, that could be good, but with Brexit I really doubt any of that will happen for the foreseeable future.
      Is the A13 50 limit camera enforced? because from experience with Glasgow I know that the blanket 50 limit is ignored by pretty well everyone, in fact your more likely to cause a crash going at 50 than 70 with the speeds everyone (cabbies, coppers, just about every driver) does.

    • @rxss6154
      @rxss6154 Před 5 lety

      KarlosBricks I completely agree, the government wants us all to change to electric cars but there is no infrastructure for it. My parents are way more than happy to buy an electric car but 1, my dad drives over to Kent for work and does about 30 miles a day commute so the rang in an electric car isn’t economical unless he buys a Tesla which costs £80,000 plus the £500+ a year extra road tax. We also live in a flat and the nearest charging station is in the town centre, however if that breaks he has to go to the other town. We can’t change at home and 2 if we wanted to drive long distance we would constantly have to stop to charge up.
      Especially with trains what you have said, for a season ticket from my station to Fenchurch street in London (c2c Line) it costs nearly £2,000 just for 1 year. Plus parking costs an extra £900 for a season ticket. Nearly £3,000 just to get to work for a year. Its more economical for me as a student getting into outer london (Romford) to just drive my Corsa, i get 38.9 MPG (town driving) so i rarely fill up and its only £30 a year tax.
      Unfortunately the A13 is all average speed cameras. It starts all the way from Dagenham and stops just before the Grays turn off, after that, its all national speed limits. Many people failed their test (including me) down the A13. I personally think we just should have an autobhan like Germany where its unlimited speeds down certain parts of the motorway. Speed cameras are just another “fine” for driving tbh.
      The A13 was a mess today unironically, loads of buses was cancelled and pretty much everywhere was gridlocked.
      I heard Birmingham done the “20 is plenty” campaign and converted 30 roads to 20, hows that holding up? Good thing about Thurrock is there is hardly any 20 roads, its mostly in estates or really build up areas.

    • @kd84afc
      @kd84afc Před 5 lety

      Can’t fix it with its current budget if £125 billion annually, that’s £10.3 billion per month it costs the tax payer! An extra £6 billion wouldn’t make a dent ! The NHS is a money pit, needs a major restructuring not pointless money thrown at it, when that money can used in other areas

    • @kd84afc
      @kd84afc Před 5 lety

      @David Bennett unfortunately people seem money is always the answer, £6 billion wouldn't run the NHS for a month in its current form. What the NHS needs is a complete restructuring, get rid of so many none clinical staff and stop the use of PFI contracts that cost the NHS billions. London as needed anotber river crossing for years and it needs doing ASAP. Money well spent

    They do need another tunnel though as in high winds they close the queen elizabeth bridge off and use the tunnel instead heading north from kent to essex you use the tunnel but coming south from essex to kent its over that bridge and if thats shut and theres an accident in the tunnel its a big detour to the blackwall tunnel which is then shut due to an accident so woolwich ferey well thats ok unless its night or early morning then no that's shut as well. It took me 5 hours to get from grays in essex back to hastings because of this mess via a detour round the north and south circular so yes another tunnel is needed that would of saved me at least 3 hours driving time which i would of happily paid £1.50 to use instead of an extra 3 hours driving and petrol costs.

    Better and more affordable public transport links should be utilised to remove a portion of the traffic. This area of Kent has train stations running once every half hour and the same can be said for the buses.
    This is an area with ever increasing pollution levels, but the government seems to have little care for this fact and its impact on public health.
    However, I don't directly oppose this concept, but it definitely feels like it lacks a lot of foresight for the region.
