As an American, I notice there were commonalities of racism in the United States vs South Africa. During the height of Jim Crow, black folks were treated like second class citizens to the point where we were treated as subhuman.
During the height of Apartheid, Black South Africans too were also faced with political, social, and economic discrimination.
Of course, not all ski folk are kinfolks, we discern a individual’s character. However, as long as injustice remains, we should work to overcome the inequalities of black people globally.
I hear you. I think we must pose the question, do black people globally want justice and are we willing to do what it takes to achieve it?
In America, there is racial profiling, and in Africa, it is downright tribalism.
Yes Black South Africans were systematically relegated to the lowest class and considered less than human which meant we had no human rights . We were denied citizenship altogether in their own homeland and up until 1994. Back then the apartheid government ruthlessly used execution as a weapon against Black South Africans this included innocent school children and civilians. Failure to carry the "dompas"(stupid pass) often led to arrests and most were executed or lynched their bodies disposed of in unmarked mass graves . Even To this day more mass graves continue to be discovered. The exact number of undiscovered graves is unknown but Each newly discovered mass grave reopens unhealed wounds
Well, to be more specific in America (where it is written) We are considered 3/4 of a man and In South Africa I know their history as well including their all-White TOWN! No matter where you go in this captivity, their evils will be there.
It's a private Afrikaner village, not an all-white town.
Our people have been through hell. I am not willing to be an amnesiac towards that past. I don't move forward without the sacrifice and pain of my ancestors and it shouldn't be dismissed. It doesn't mean carrying hate or hostility towards whites.

Great comment, it made me reflect. For some of us...we do carry hate and hostility, and that's okay too. The older I get the more I learn to respect our (African) diversity and the MANY approaches to the Black/African experience. My default is to dominate "son" every unknown european man that is in my presence. I grew up in Memphis... we called losing to a white dude...in anything "breaking the law". I have always had a hard time dealing with Black/African people who don't have knowledge of self, or the ostrich types or worse.. the apologist... but these days I make an effort to understand them better.
And that over there is the dilemma that many black South Africans tend to have. The debate of treating our counterparts based off of character vs race. The best I can tell you, from my experience, is that it is important to always treat people based off of their individual character however you must always be ready to default to your own race. Sometimes it is hard because you are defaulting to people- of your same colour- who would slit your throat at any given notice but you will, with time, realise that white South Africans especially, ALWAYS default to their race and they are unapologetic for it. These are very deep observations and it is such nuances in reasoning that truly make the South African experience. Anyone black and South African from the most educated professor to car security guards will in one way or another articulate the exact same conflict so you can take comfort in that you are not alone. The only correct answers unfortunately, are those that are correct to you ❤🇿🇦

As a South African who has been learning the american culture and history, it warms my heart to see you in this land of your great ancestors with a sense of belonging to the land despite language barrier and cultural shocks. Watching your videos had solidified that the most powerful aspect of one'self is being connected to who they are. When people talk about xenophobia in the context of South Africa, I get absolutely mad... for the simple reason that those eho screams xenophobia they are not addressing the wrong doing of those who are purported recipients of xenophobia.
Yes, growth is required in every season! Even when we seem to be stagnant, we can still grow. Now that I’m retired, my life is full and I still have things I progressing towards. If we stop growing, that’s when we’re in trouble!❤

Great video Ashley. I can't wait to visit SA very soon, God willing. I think if I happen to like SA, I'd be willing to buy a home there and be part of the community. I'm an African American Muslim, and its awesome to know there's a huge Muslim community there in SA. I also love to play golf and there's a plethora of beautiful golf courses there. I don't have anything holding me back now. My children are grown, my home here in the U.S is paid in full, I dont have any car notes to pay. Im free as a bird in my 40's, Alhomdulilah! (Praise be to God). I can manage my investments from SA easily. Ashley, you're the best! I also love watching my brother Dr. Asad. May God continue to bless you guys and your families. Ameen

Our Christian neighbors/family gets invited for Eid and Muslims neighbors/friends gets invited for Xmas. I don't practice any religion but the respect we have for each others religion is first and foremost. I live so close to a mosque I can recite the call to prayer😅 but I also grew up in the Cape Malay culture. Please excuse me if it sounds like I'm gushing, that's because I am 😂❤I, we, fellow South Africans, we want our brothers and sisters here. 🫶

The workplace wasn’t always kind and supportive, I’ve seen so many people who don’t look like me fail forward, I didn’t have that opportunity. I’ve had to reinvent myself as an entrepreneur. After spending more than a decade in job roles in grants and contracts administration, I’ve reinvented myself as a grant writer, program designer and business automation. I recently got my first grant funded 200,000…not a lot of money but definitely a win for my business summary.

Ashely in Africa , I woke up to this headline by NBC news " White West Virginia couple accused of adopting Black children and forcing them to work ‘as slaves’ " : They adopted 5 children from a local shelter, locked them in a barn with no running water or toilets, fed them enough to keep them alive. Then forced them to work on their farm.

The controlling factions in every nation at different times and places have lied to us all, taught and fostered instability between male and female, between members of family, between ethnicities......... race, religion, culture ............... ideologues that sold us all into what destroys us as people. As far as human skin tones are concerned, there are no black, white, yellow etc. There are different shades of brown, from light brown to darkest brown. Your skin looks light brown to me, and is a common skin colour in South East Asian countries. It's only in the US where they use colours to define a race.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. unfortunately, we have to acknowledge and hold space for the collective experience of those who live in certain parts of the world with darker skin tones. Their past experiences are valid. The positive impact is that their future experiences don’t have to reflect those of their past.
Asians may not define people by skin color, but they certainly discriminate by skin color. Dark-skinned people have historically been discriminated against and considered unattractive in many Asian cultures.
Race is deeper than skin colour now. Someone brown from Malaysia will likely be treated better than someone brown from The US or Africa. Understanding that racial issues is more deep than complexion can bring in the right effort needed to combat. Right now, as long as you identify as Black, the world automatically puts you at the bottom. It's reality. We just wanna change that, however, we need to realize Black racism has been rife since pre-Van Riebeek and Columbus.

Ashley, I do like and appreciate your perspective and views on everything you have said here. It certainly resonates with me in my life experience. You are so correct, and I appreciate what you are doing to help others. I have found that life today demands or requires rare skills and strengths that are not taught in schools, not even in two-parent family homes today, IMO. The ability to find some semblance of truth about whats happening around us and the world community, is strategically being hampered by the very sources that the greater public relies on, looks up to, and trust. This makes it difficult for the average person to "distinguish the signal from the noise," so to speak.

People need statistics before deciding to move to a new place, whether it's within their country or abroad. They look at crime rates, health issues, climate, etc... It's understandable that these statistics might be negative for an entire district or country due to specific problematic areas. However, what people want to know is which specific areas are bad vs which are good.
I’m not sure there is a such things as “bad vs. good.” There are pros and cons to every place. You have to decide which pros and cons you are willing to live with.

It must be such a paradigm shift to live in a place where race is not the predominant characteristic as an individual...i imagine it must be a relief but as you say, a need to grow beyond the things we pick up as part of american acculturation. My wife is from Jamaica and had to adjust dealing with class vs. the overwhelmingly strong focus on race here in the U.S..

Ashley, I would love to see a forum of investors. Many educated African Americans are choosing to take their wealth to Europe, which, of course, is their right, but if subscribers could see that Africa can produce positive financial results, they would be willing to get on board. If you show success stories, folks would be more willing to take a chance on the continent.

The ANC is more diplomatic I'm doing things because they decided to find mutual grounds with its enemies to work things out to benefit all that live, work and play in SA. They became too comfortable when Zuma took office and Corruption with misuse of state resources began slowly in Ramaphosa period faced with huge unemployment, high crime rates that once again divided the nation due to the poor service delivery. Now the ANC has been warned by the voters that if they don't fix the problems off corruption, high unemployment rates and high crime rates the next elections won't be pretty for the ANC losing even higher votes in the next elections. The GNU is just to fix the economy, crime, the ongoing matters of the imbalances that keeps on hunting SA but this time involving all race groups in the decision making process to wholly get results that will Unite the 🌈 nation since they chose to focus on a progressive multicultural society than breaking apart. The lies on a white genocide and those dumb ideologies off dreaming for an independent Cape Town to the whites when there are also blacks there wouldn't work but the idea crushed and vanish in the air. Most importantly getting more results in fixing the imbalances that left a scar to the current SA society this time involving more the whites in the decision making process.
Its a government of 2 parties, DA and ANC. DA is former national party - the apartheid government.

At least from a tourist point of view, I felt a marked difference between those who live in Cape Town and those who live in Johannesburg. You may not be able to notice it the way an outsider notices. By the way, this is not true only for South Africa, even in the country where I live in different cities there is a slightly different mentality.

Who is suffering in south Africa? I ask this question because I live in the U.S and from this side... I see black people suffering over there more than any other race of people. When will they be able to enjoy the riches of their lands like others have enjoyed it.
If you mean "suffering" in the financial sense of the word, then yes, it would be primarily black people. However, some things to consider are the following - black people make up over 90% of the population of South Africa. Within that large percentage are people from every single social class and economic group, ranging from the completely impoverished to the super rich. The black middle class, which has been well-developed in SA and continues growing every year, has already surpassed the white middle class in number (yes, you read that correctly). This clearly shows massive progress, yet many people choose to focus on the impoverished masses as "proof" that there has been little to no progress. What many forget is that SA is still a developing nation economically speaking, and overnight social transformation simply isn't possible within that context. Quality education, free markets, and continued economic growth are the only ways to right the wrongs of the past in any meaningful and/or sustainable manner.
No one can convince me anywhere in Africa is "a better life" than America.
My own experience as a non American and non South African, that based on the places I have traveled to in the U.S, I choose South Africa every time. I don’t know what African countries you have visited, or your experience
