  • Vintage TOY Paradise - Visiting - The Museum of Brands - In London - Full Tour - Jaw Dropping!
    In today's video we take a look at The Museum of Brands in London.
    What an amazing place this is. The history of UK brands, from the Victorian era right through to today are on show in this enormous museum. The display cases are literally crammed with period books, magazines, chocolates, toys, jigsaws, board games, early radios and TV's, records, food packaging, it's just endless. Items are from the famous Robert Opie collection. I was told this is just a tenth of what he owns!
    If you are in London, you must make a point of visiting. The website to book tickets is right here; museumofbrands.com/
    The Robert Opie Scrapbooks are available here, they are superb; amzn.to/40E4WNC

    Superb video - fascinating collection, which Robert Opie started in 1963 (!). I recommend his 'In Search Of Our Throwaway History' DVD, which you see right at the end of the video. Spotted the 1977 Palitoy Talking Batmobile in the '60s cabinet, I blame the Time Trapper.

      Thanks Andy, I didn't pick up a copy of that dvd but I'd Iike to see it. Yes, the Talking Batmobile stood out a mile. Also the UFO Ed Streker car was in the sixties bit as well but that blended in a bit better.

    Lovely enjoyable video, thank you. What an amazing place! So many memories triggered. I remember a lot of the Festival of Britain stuff from my mum telling me about it, she was there aged about 8. I'm your age so the 70s stuff was very evocative. The missing 80s stuff is probably down to space but talking of the oddest one-offs popping up in unexpected places, I recall seeing costumed Robin of Sherwood dolls in a toy museum in Estonia over 20 years after the series was shown. I'm not sure any visitors except me knew what they were. I have some of the books shown here, like Avengers annuals, and we know from our book collections how ink can fade in natural sunlight, it must take great care to look after even more ephemeral printed packaging... how on Earth he keeps the sealed foodstuffs from going off is anyone's guess - I'd be very worried keeping yoghurts that long!

      @JulesBurt  Před rokem +2

      Thanks Frank. I'd really like to interview Robert and ask him how he started and how he managed to keep so many items in such exceptional condition. It's a truly amazing place and well worth a visit if you get chance.

    Watched the museum of brands episode,noticed a palitoy 1977 palitoy Batmobile in the 60's toy cabinet 😅.
    Also noticed ,the accute lack of Fireball xl5 merchandise,(and only saw 3 stingray bits too),other than an annual and a TV21 Free gift., I could fill a cabinet of it.

    • @JulesBurt
      @JulesBurt  Před 5 měsíci

      It's true, I told them about the Batmobioe being in the wrong cabinet but they just sort of shrugged, like who the hell are you? They have a curator and it's their mistake and they wouldn't be told otherwise 😔

    Thanks for the video Jules, great work , must go next time in London. I think it was the palitoy Batmobile that is 1970s that had been place in with 60s items.

    Its a reason to come to London alone, outstanding selection and so well presented. I read one of his books years ago. There is very little advertising before the late Victorian era (1880s) and thus very little material, maybe Georgian handbills and ads in old papers are usually lines. The rise in lithography and chromo lithography meant that colourful advertisements could start. Plus add on the fact more people became literate after the 1870 Edication act, before that less people read and many people did not have the money to buy commercially made products, another part of the Industrial Revolution. Think about it, until the late 1700s, most people went to markets and bought things raw or made their own.

      A great point and one I'd not considered. It's a fantastic museum and you really do need to see it with your own eyes to fully appreciate all the exhibits.
