Hm me too, but it's not "what" happened to her as much as "how" it happened to her. Even as a fave character I think she going crazy was foreshadowed to say the least... and I actually like it. But... NOOT the way they did it, they turned her into a mad little girl who got upset cuz her friends didn't like her anymore so she burned a city down. It was just dumb and lazy.

@@TianaT4 I agree. She was such an amazing character and her ending was written like shit. Her story arch could have been good. GOT was always supposed to be about grey morality but she straight up turned into an evil villain. Her character could have been a great representation of the horrors of war and the use of WOMD (Dragons). She won't have burned the entire city down, but civilians would have been killed in the cross fire. She would have killed fleeing soldiers and even prisoners of war. Her finally arc would have been not going truly crazy, but called crazy because she fell into Noble cause corruption. This would have been a contrast to the other noble character, Jon Snow, who would have kept his morals throughout war.
But hey. I understand. The producers were tired. They were ready to move on. So they did the most lazy and terrible writing possible and cramped three seasons worth of content in to one so they can move on to... oh that's right... no where.

The Starks at least they were happy at one point of their lives, Dany was always running and being abused by her brother...then she just got some months happy with Drogo to be left with nothing again.
She just wanted to belong...she didn't belong to Essos and thought Westeros would be her home, but it really wasn't. Noticing how everyone truly hated or feared her in Westeros must've been heartwreaking

Yeah, It was because the screenwriters were men, so they see women as weaker sex after all. They can't understand that not all women are emotionally unstable and don’t desire only just to be loved in life. Such a strong woman like Deanerys would never lost her sanity and integrity because Jon Snow doesn’t love her anymore. She experienced too much to go mad because of death of her friend and loss of lover. There were impressive women in history who proves that woman don’t need man by her side to be strong, complete and powerful.

@@hypothesa Danny going mad was actually always part of George R R Marten's plan, even though he didn't finish the books he gave them basically an outline and some samples of what he had intended to do. I think it actually makes complete sense that she went mad, there was foreshadowing throughout the series for it, especially that her father was The Mad King, and that she steadily went from calm and methodical to aggressive and temperamental as she gained power. I think between the points you mentioned, Varys' betrayal, the loss of 2 dragons (which were basically her children), and partly that there seemed to be a genetic disposition to mental instability from incest (her parents were also siblings), it was the logical conclusion.
ALL THAT SAID, the delivery in the show was horrendous. I get that the idea was that so much would just push her into eventually snapping, but the last season just skipped from main event to main event to main event in a way that there was no time for us as the audience to feel the coming storm. It didn't feel justified in any way and it was frankly just sloppy writing. It doesn't matter how good a story actually is, if you deliver it the wrong way it's not going to impact as intended.

@@lancenwokeji6349 she spent an amount of her childhood living in a house with a red door, which became the symbol of home for her, so when she dreamt about going to Westeros she imagined that all doors would be red. The red keep is a literal metaphor for her dream of a home, but she never felt at home in Westeros like she thought that she would, the more time she spent there, the further she strayed away from her real self. What was meant to be her home and everything she had done to make that dream come true was shattered day by day. So she gave up on that desire to make it her home when she felt that it would never be a home to her and abandoned herself right in the moment when she realized her dream wouldnt come true, thus painting the red door black and giving herself up in that moment in pursuit of another, more realistic dream, aka liberating the whole world from tyrants like Cersei.

  • @stefanomodonesi
    @stefanomodonesi Před 2 lety +603

More than 2 years after the end of GoT, it's possible to analyze the entire series in a more objective and measured way.
It's true that there were some clues (about Daenerys' "dark" ending) from the first season, however using books's logic by George Martin, it's impossible not to notice how at some point in the TV series the characters were totally changed from how they are written in the books.
For example we have Tyrion who after murdering his father and strangling his lover (and raping a prostitute, but this only in the books) suddenly becomes the best and most moralistic character of the whole show: yes, just the one who in the second season has not hesitated for a moment to use the Wildfire to destroy Stannis' fleet, burning thousands alive, including Ser Davos' son.
And that's because on the show the showrunners had chosen Tyrion to get their voice on the moral of their story.
While in the books Tyrion is actually selfish, cunning, calculating and ... vengeful !!! ... This evidently did not interest the showrunners.
And it's easy enough to see how after the end of the fourth season (the last one that followed the books quite faithfully) this story was no longer Martin's but something else.
And it's not difficult to understand that D&D were writing the last few seasons completely ignoring the path indicated by Martin and instead following their very personal idea on the characters created by George.
You can clearly see how those two were deeply inspired by Breaking Bad when they envisioned their ending, and how they planned Daenerys' path to make her look like Anakin Skywalker's transformation into Darth Vader.
Apparently they thought that by creating the female version of Anakin Skywalker, Disney would pave the way for a new Star Wars trilogy ...
But things, as we all know, did not go exactly like this: you can't think of doing a job well if your head is somewhere else.
If you want to do GoT well, you have to study Martin's books and add complexity and intrigue, you can't trivialize the plot that way and add a gorgeous ending ... but that was that of another TV series, that has nothing to do with the one you are working on.
The result of this mixture could only be a big and stupid mess.
And the rush to finish the show by accelerating the development of the story only made the final result even worse.
GoT will go down in history as the show with the most interesting and captivating storyline in TV history, but also as the one with the absolute worst ending ... a stupid, hasty ending that doesn't do justice to the show's first good seasons.

May I ask: what is the path indicated by Martin in your opinion?

    • @stefanomodonesi
      @stefanomodonesi Před 2 lety +21

@@Cliohna If you mean what Martin is likely to do in the books ... well, I think Daenerys will have a tragic ending, but she will never be the Dany-Hitler that we saw on the show.
Perhaps the designated hero will be Jon, since in Martin's books it is almost always the male character who accompanies the reader to the moral of the whole story (although the more badass characters in Martin's books are predominantly female, and ASOIAF does not except for nothing).
I'm afraid Bran will be King in the books too (but in what way and what it's all to see) ... and in my opinion he could also be the one who wrote ASOIAF (after all ASOIAF is written in various POVs, and Bran is the is the only one who can know what's going on inside a person's head, as he can go in and see people's past and present).
In the book Fire & Blood, George seems to me to have changed the name of Jaehaerys I first daughter to Daenerys I (while in "The World of Ice and Fire" the name of the first born was different), so I assume that Martin wanted us to understand that maybe Daenerys will die in the war against the Others to save Westeros (as Daenerys I died of a disease called "Shivers").
Here is what you need to know about Daenerys I Targaryen:
      awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Daenerys_Targaryen_(daughter_of_Jaehaerys_I)
This is not to say that Daenerys won't set King's Landing on fire, but if she does, it sure won't be her ending, and the reasons why that might be more of a mistake (remember the Wildfire below the city) than a deliberate thing.
Either way Martin is a cheat, and he could change everything to make the story less predictable.
So let's get ready for everything ... and until the books are out, I think everything is still plausible (except his happy ending ... that I think is 0.0000001% probable, because Martin is notoriously a sadist, and he loves to kill the characters readers are most fond of, plus love stories always end quite badly in his books).

I honestly think Dany was always meant to end mad, even in George's story. To end up killing everyone in King's Landing, no matter their status. Just that D&D made it in the worst possible way possible and here we are.

People forgot how good she was and don't understand that all the pain make her that way. Then she found a man that she loved and he could not love her back because they were related. She saved more lives than she take. And how many people wanted to kill her. Thanks to Emilia Clarke that she brought this character to life. A lot of pain can turn into a madness.

Actually, Jon was madly in love with Dany. But being raised a Stark it was not honorable to bed his aunt. This story is being repeated now in House of Dragons between Daemon (uncle) and Rhaenyra (niece). And, because there has been some time between these two for some chemistry, fans are shipping them hard.
Just because Jon refused to sleep with Dany did not mean he didn't love her. He continued to love her deeply and tried to keep his own feelings in check by remaining away from her. If not he was tempted -he wanted her.
When Jon killed Dany he became a "broken man." It was touching when Tyrion showed compassion and touched his should for a few moments. Jon will never be the same again. So, his ending was not so wonderful either.

She lost brother because she killed him (indirectly, but she watched the scene with pleasure). She lost husband because she killed him. Her friends were true, that's why they tried to stop her from committing more attrocities, like crucifying hundreds of people, burning alive soldiers who surrendered, or turning the biggest city in Westeros into ashes and slaughtering everyone inside. She betrayed her brother who was promised the crown. She betrayed her other brother whose real identity would make him the rightful heir.

I dare to say melting your brother's head with liquid gold is quite cruel. Suffocating your husband or burning alive the witch who brought him back because you wanted it, despite her warnings. Executing and burning alive surrendered soldiers. Crucifying hundreds of civilians. Killing all the masters and becoming the master yourself. Executing your advisor because he tried to stop your from committing more attrocities. Lying about the true identity of your step brother, the rightul heir, and manipulating him in order to keep power. Oh, and that moment when you decide to burn the whole city to ashes, while your soldiers slaughter everyone on the ground, because why not. And never had the guts to do it with your own hands.

The more i think about it, the more and more it makes sense she burned it all. From her very start she's been liberating slaves and changing things by changing the very way the people lived. And she's done it thru death. She burned all the khals. She burned the owner of the unsullied. She saw how much the north didn't accept her. The people of kings landing would never accept her. And ultimately if jhon wouldn't join her he'd become an enemy and she'd kill him too. The problem is danny always had one only plan getting her throne that was her birthright. But in the process of getting it she realised what the true game of thrones was. And like they said "when you play the game of thrones there is no second best, you win or you die"

    • @sensuscommunis2526

You forgot she killed her own brother - the first heir to the throne (although not directly). She then killed her husband (suffocated him), who was brought back to live by a witch (whom she killed, too), despite clear warnings she shouldn't, after he was wounded in the fight started because of her (depraved warriors of their spoils). She crucified hundreds of innocent people for the sins of the few nobles. She killed the masters and then became the master herself. On multiple occasions she executed enemy soldiers by burning them alive, despite they were already beaten, unarmed and surrendered. She executed her own advisor who tried to stop her from committing more such attrocities. She burned the whole city to the ground. And she manipulated her another brother, the rightful heir, so that she can keep the power for herself. She's Hitler (they even share the passion for burning people), just with better PR.
