Owning the Triumph Tiger 900 GT Low (LRH): Views from a New Rider

- This is more of an owner's perspectives than a formal review of the Triumph Tiger 900 GT Low. With the entire city on lockdown once again, I finally found the opportunity to make a feature about my hardworking and dependable steed that has safely brought me to all the lovely places that I've so far managed to share with you in this channel - my Triumph Tiger 900 GT (LRH). At this point, I've owned my Tiger for about 9 months now, and I've ridden it through a number of road conditions and paths. With this background, I would like to share my experiences and views about my bike in this video. I also address one specific question: Is it friendly to new riders?
P.S. For those who may be wondering, the ground clearance of my Tiger 900 GT Low (LRH) is 6.5 inches with 15 full clockwise turns on the rear spring preload adjustment (resulting in around half an inch increase in height). This means that a fully minimized rear preload position would have around 6 inches of ground clearance.

Very nice review. Yes I'm calling it a review even if you don't because it was extremely well thought out and you have included all the information a new rider needs from the perspective of an owner. Well done. Like you I'm 5' 5" 1/2 and have an inseam of 30 in, but I can flatfoot my GT pro with the low seat option. If I wear my Daytona M-Star GTX boots I can flatfoot my GT pro with the standard seat (on the low setting). Did you try a standard GT with the low seat?
Oh wow! The dealer did tell me months after I got my GT that they eventually tried the same thing that you did, which was to use the adjustable seat on the regular GT / GT Pro, and that it indeed brought the seat height to a more manageable level, without sacrificing ground clearance. This was after I purchased my GT model, but it was still good to know that this was something others can do. It's really helpful to know that it works well for a 30 inch inseam, so this is an option I can consider if I eventually upgrade to the Pro version. Thanks a lot for your very kind comments. Just bought the 2023 tiger LRH. Im 5'1".... its a great bike. Dont see myself getting another for a very very long time.

Thank you for your thorough review of the 900 low. I’m 5’6” and have sat on the bike and really felt comfortable on it. For us shorter individuals I just wish there were more options for us in the adventure class of motorcycles.

Were you able to flat foot it? I am 5’4” with 28” inseam.
@@RR9sf Yes, I am able to flatfoot the bike with slightly bent knees. I have a 30 inch inseam so I think you'd have no problem.
I seen a video with a beginner girl rider that had her Tiger Adventure lowered for her height & it was super nice bike plus allowed her to ride with her husband 👍 I’m not trying to sell you a Triumph but they give the most options & are very nicely optioned out for anyones wants or needs.
Can’t find that in other manufacturers 😢

Thanks so much for your very informative "review" and personal experience with the 900 GT Low! I am a little over 5'7" with a 31" inseam and have been riding a Yamaha Super Tenere (1200cc) for the last year. I have the seat in the low position, at about 33.5. With "sag," I can usually only flat-foot one foot at stops. I have found this bike to be top heavy and challenging to push when parking it - as I cannot straddle it I have to roll it into place - and have dropped it doing this. I am selling this bike and am considering the Triumph 900 GT or the 800XRX, as well as the BMW F700GS. I appreciated your showing the adjustable seat for the 900. This helps a lot! I recently also started looking at the GS line in case I eventually want to transition to the heavier ADVs and I was surprised at the accessible height and balance of the 1250 GS. Another mid-sized ADV bike that I was recently impressed with is the KTM 790 adventure, which is super light and easily manageable even with its 830-850 mm seat height. Good luck in your search and it would be great if you can share what you eventually decide on. Ride safe 👍

You call yourself a new rider but you have developed a good sense of discipline and confidence on many different terrains! I am also a ‘new rider’ who currently owns a Ducati scrambler icon and a thruxton rs (I had to have it) and am thinking about buying a tiger 900 low for longer rides and adventures. Thanks to your thoughtful and thorough video, I am one step closer. I do not need to keep up with the gsx1200 folks. I just want warm hands (I know it’s extra!) and cruise control. And the ability to feel ready for a highway!

I think the Tiger 900 is able to hold its own out there on the road, and it's really quite light. Although I did have a problem when I loaded my topbox with camping gear and went offroad 😅... that was a lesson learned for me.
Remember expert to novice, it’s all trial & error 💯 I’ve been riding sense 5 & I still learning lol, and 3 time world Champ in class.
Theses new bikes are so amazing 😳🤗I’ve stuck to basics first, comfort comfort comfort, then quality, & options. That way you feel like you’re one with the bike, and not on a bucking bronco 😂

Thank you. I’m 5-6 and also got my first bike 3 years ago. T100. . It’s not comfy for long distances and can’t go on gravel . I’ve been looking around for a adv that I fit on . I’m def gonna check this out.
Thanks for your comment. 👍 The bike has certainly increased my confidence in riding ADV bikes, and I've used it to try out offroad tracks as well. It's not as capable offroad as other ADV bikes (given its road bias), but I think it can handle the occasional trails. Good luck with your search.

Excellent video. I am 5’7” with a 29.5 inseam. I’m also 72 years old. I am currently riding a BMW 1250 RT because I’m doing long distance touring. Greetings from Manila! I'm really happy that the video has been of some help. What amazes me the most is how Triumph succeeded in making the bike feel so light, and how they managed to put much of the weight at the bottom. This also gave me more room to load my bike with stuff for long hauls. For example, I just bought the top box... I earlier feared its impact on "top heaviness" but I actually almost don't feel anything. Ride safe!
A great informative video which I would love to have watched prior to purchasing my Tiger 900 GT Pro two months ago. I absolutely agree with you, the bike inspires confidence in shorter riders like us. I’m 5ft 6 and also around 30” inseam. Even thought I have the standard GT Pro seat on its lowest setting Of 810mm and find this more than acceptable for an adventure bike which I had never considered prior to test riding the Tiger, I had always assumed adventure bikes were too big. I wish you many more happy and safe enjoyable miles on your Tiger and thank you for the video!!!

I was actually considering whether the Tiger GT Pro would be a good next progression for me (after fully enjoying my LRH for a couple of more years of course 😊 ), especially after others (spacecoasttactical and Ron Pirie) gave encouraging comments about it, as yourself. I have also been reading about other ADVs like the F 850 GS, and I also tested the 1250 GS (before eventually choosing the Tiger 900 GT LRH), These were all amazing bikes, but I simply had an inexplicable sense of extra confidence with the Tigers. Another factor that finally sealed the deal for me was actually beyond the bike itself, and more into the dealership - since Triumph just entered the Philippine market, as opposed to the other brands, I actually felt that I was investing into a brand (or a company) that would progress with me (despite the concomitant risks of an initially thin after-market selection). Also remember tires will give much options on what type of riding you will me doing.
Standard tires are street.
The suspension has all modes you can ever think of on the GT Pro or just get the Adventure model🥳
The GT Pro indeed has more options than the regular GT and I believe more riding modes. I also agree on the type of tires... I changed mine last year to Scorpion STRs and they made a big difference when I took the bike offroad. 👍

Thanks so much for your kind comments. It's exciting that you're about to buy your 1st adventure bike. I think most brands are good in their own way, pero as an ADV beginner my 1st consideration was height and weight. At that time the Tiger 900GT Low was one of the most accessible bike out there. Youre also bound to drop it, esp if you take it offroad, so you may want to consider buying brand new and 2nd hand. Good luck!

Great video. Thank you so much. I'm picking up a 900 Tiger GT Pro next week. I'm 5' 5" with a 28 inch inseam. I sat on the 900 LRH model that you reviewed and it felt great. I found a GP Pro for sale with only 984 miles on it. Perfect condition. Since it was a private sale within the state (Arizona), I didn't have to pay sales tax, and as a private sale there was no freight, setup charge, etc. that a dealer would add. Since I need to low ride height of the LRH model, I'm investing in the LRH seat, and a set of Lust Racing lowering links. These two mods bring the GT Pro down to the same ride height as your LRH model. Thank you again for an excellent video.

Nice review. I'm am looking at this same bike. I'm riding a MT-09 now but I want to get off road a lot more being we live in Bataan. Many dirt roads and mountain terrain.

I am seriously considering buying a second Tiger to keep in Mindoro for my travels there after I retire next year.
I am 5'6" with 29" inside leg and like a previous comment, I found that the standard GT Pro was fine for me (I'm in UK) with low seat height and Daytona M-Star GTX boots.
I am very much looking forward to returning to your amazing country again (after living in Puerto Galera for a year). I have travelled to more than 20 countries in the world now and Philippines people and countryside is my favourite .

Thank you. I took a normal 900 out and im 5ft 5 on a triumph demo. I dropped it! Ive bought a low ride height and had to pay the excess for the damage😢 lookong foreard to getting my 900 in caspian blue in teo weeks..
Oh no... I hope you weren't hurt yourself and that the damage to the demo bike wasn't that big/costly. I remember I dropped my Tiger (even with the low height) during the first week of taking it out to a long ride (and without first putting the crash bars). Lesson learned the hard way for me. I've seen at least one video where the owner said she preferred the red over the blue color, but I personally prefer the caspian blue. It seems way cooler. By the way, I recently took my Street Scrambler offroad and so I'll be soon releasing a video comparing the performance of the Tiger 900 GT vs the Scrambler 900, in case you were wondering how these two relate (at least offroad). @MotoFaith alas it cost me 1000 quid because the tank was 💔... and a sore twisted back.
Oh man... that was a pricey lesson, but at least it was just a sore back that could easily heal. By the way, I was wondering why you chose the Tiger instead of say the GS or even the KTM 790 Adventure. These were the 3 adventure bikes I was considering at one point.
@MotoFaith love. Never had a triumph fail me. I've had a street triple, a trident 660 and now a tiger. Buy British.
Great video. I like that you covered the few negatives as well as the positives. I have a Tiger 800 XRx Low and I'm seriously considering upgrading. I just need to see if I'm comfortable on the regular GT with the low seat or if I need the low 900.
Thanks a lot for your comment Mike! 👍 The GT Low has been a great workhorse so far. The only thing for me offroad is that I still find the triple engine a bit too responsive even on offroad mode (as opposed to a twin) and so I just need to be a bit more gentle on the throttle. I also had a tiger 800 XRX low which I loved and could touch the ground very comfortably with my 28 inch inseam. I sold it because I do ride canyons very aggressively and got a little sketchy scraping the pigs. I purchased a tiger 900 GT pro regular height and put a low seat on it. Great bike.
Excellent review. Clear & concise. "...like a scooter "....really? But that definitely is a description that'll get people like curious! And not in a negative way. The better they handle, lower in height n weight the better they are.
I am 5'-7" with a 31 inch seam; & ride a 2021 GSA R1250 LOW. Its a good bike. But the more I look at the tiger 900 the more I think its a better bike. I had the GSA R1200 low before this....so I do have experience on the BMWs....they are great bikes....but not necessarily the best out there. 😉
Thanks for the great and detailed comment. 👍The GS1250's boxer engine seems to give it a lower center of gravity than the Tiger, even if it's heavier (especially the GSA). To be honest, I think the boxer's twin engine is more forgiving than the Tiger's triple offroad, coz the triple seems to be more sensitive on the throttle response (which doesn't seem to change even on offroad mode). But all taken, I'm still enjoying my Tiger 900 two years on... ride safe!
Excellent overview of the Tiger 900 GT Low. What's the longest ride you've done? Did you have an fatigue? I'm shopping for a new bike for longer ridding adventures. Three things on my wish list are cruise control, very comfy seat and good wind protection from the windshield. Hoping you have time to comment. Thanks!
Thanks a lot for your comment and questions Richard. The longest continuous ride I did was 400++ kms, which was around 5 hrs (no stops at all) and 6 hrs (with a dinner break). I did not experience any unusual fatigue with the Tiger. The seat is comfortable (although not as comfy as the GS 1250) and the Tiger has cruise control. Im impressed by the windshield, because it does a great job deflecting the wind and insects (especially riding at night). In fact, I can sometimes keep my visor up in lower speeds. Great review, plus your country looks amazing! I'm thinking of getting a tiger 1200 for the power and shaft drive, but the weight is the issue as much as the height.. A low seat version would be beneficial. 👍
Hi Barry thanks a lot for your really kind comments, and also for sharing your thoughts about the Tiger 1200. To be honest, I have myself reached some kind of crossroad... I feel that I am ready to further upgrade, and the 1200 did come to mind. However, I was informed that, even with the low seat, it would still be higher than even the Rally Pro. Plus, I feel that I don't need the added power anyway. I am now fiddling with the idea of getting a Rally Pro with a low seat option. I tried it and it's quite manageable for me, even if it is taller than the GT Low. I still love my GT though, and so I'm currently at the stage of uncertainty...
@@MotoFaith interesting..! I think it depends on what kind of terrain you want to ride in, and whether the rally pro would give you more capability over the GT. I recently watched a review of both bikes side by side, and it seemed the pro,with its longer travel suspension and extra engine mode (off road pro I think, which allows you to turn off the traction and abs completely) would be the better bike if you do a lot of off road. I want a bike more as a long distance mostly road tourer with luggage, and very little dirt riding.. So the bigger engine would be an advantage! Your GT is already a fantastic bike though! 🙂

You hit the nail on the head, because I was thinking of the Rally more due to its off road characteristics, but you're also right that I do not foresee myself going on lots of extreme dirt tracks anyway. I'll keep you posted in this thread on my decision. Do keep me posted as well on whether you eventually get the Tiger 1200... would love to hear your initial thoughts about the bike 👍

Thanks a lot for your kind comment! 🙏 I think the only way to switch both headlights is to put it on high beam... i.e. the left light is dedicated for high beam.

I’ve tried many bikes, Triumph & BMW 900’s are very close to each other, but the biggest thing I’ve felt was weight.
Lighter bikes are much easier to control on & off the road.
As for comfort the Triumph is the Cadillac, of all them 🤗💯

And you can pipe the Triumph and gain much power if you really need it 😂 but I can’t see needing much more here in the Philippines 😂

Hahaha! Nailed it right there on the traffic! Seriously though, I had the same consideration when I chose the Tiger 900 over the GS 1250 here in the Philippines. I felt that the triple 888cc of the Tiger gave me more than sufficient power to get around, and even to overtake vehicles in provincial roads. My friends ride the GS 1250 and I am able to maintain a similar pace with them when we take long rides around the country. Also, I like that Triumph's presence in the Philippines is consistently increasing... I took a risk purchasing their 1st showroom Tiger more than 2 years ago, because I wasn't sure if their first shop would do well enough, and so I'm happy to still be with them as they expand locally.

What most people don’t realize that weight per Hp & Torque have huge factor on speed.
So with you being light weight & good power, your able to hang with 1250cc bikes & be more nimble around town without having to carry all that weight 💪🤗
Well done bro. Really nice video. Totally honest, no nonsence, practical and realistic. I have an 850 sport and have experienced all that you mentioned, except differentiating the buzz on the bars. Also,I have the reqular seat in low position (810 mm). But I would have preferred a low seat...only now I will have to purchase it as an accessory after market from Triumph (a cheap money making trick. They refused to give it on purchase). I've been wondering how the overall experience of the 850 sport is, as compared to the GT, because they're practically the same body and engine (with some differences in modes and features). It's also interesting to know that the dealer refused to sell you (replace) the low seat upon purchase of the unit, because our dealer here in Manila mentioned a couple of times that they could offer that optional seat upon purchase (or maybe I understood them wrong). I'm glad to meet another Tiger rider here! Ride safe my friend!
very nice video.i have same bike not LRH (since triumph dont sell LRH in india) so i bought a low seat and bike is with low position adjustment 790 mm.i am 5 feet 5 inch so tip toeing now.going to lower bike by 32 mm with lust racing lowering link then it will become like yours.

Thanks a lot, I'm glad that you like the video! As for tires, I switched the stock tires with the Scorpion STRs, I find them to be more capable offroad (like whenever I go motocamping) and still very good on pavement... although I heard that they have a shorter lifespan.

They're actually constant and only appear to be flashing. I was told that the flickering effect is caused by the non-alignment of lights' electric frequency with my camera's recording frames per second.
I appreciate your thorough and honest review. As a 5'4 rider coming from a ninja1000 with 820mm seat height and a himalayan, would you recommend the low version or the pro version for me?
Hi Joman, I think the GT Pro has an 820mm minimum seat height and so you might be comfortable with it, as its similar to your ninja. I would've gotten a Pro or Rally myself if I had a few more years' experience at the time I got my GT (though Im still quite happy with my current LRH). In a worst scenario, I think you can still buy a low seat height for your GT Pro to shave of some more mm. All the best in your selection... ride safe 👍

Thanks a lot! 👍 A fully minimized rear preload position will give you around 6 inches. This clearance will increase as you increase the preload. For example, my ground clearance is now around 6.5 inches.
An excellent review, very helpful as it covers so many important aspects. I have a similar height, thinking of upgrading to Tiger 850 from Z900. What's the seat height in LRH version ?
Thanks Rajiv! I'm glad you found it useful. The lowest seat height of the LRH is 29.9 I think, and it can reach around 31 inches.

Hi, thanks for your question. 👍 The ground clearance with the lowest setting of the rear suspension is around 6 inches. I've adjusted it upwards so it's now around 6.5 inches. My house has a high transition from my parking to the street (almost like a curb), and I've had no problems with the bike.

@@HW-kf7hi Great! I just wanted to add that the bars reach really close to the gear shifter and break pedal, so it leaves little space for your feet. Also, despite Outback's video that shows the bike being dragged and the bars catching all the hits, I actually dropped my bike once on the right side, and the brake pedal actually still touched the ground... causing it to be dented. It wasn't a major dent, but I just thought you should know.

Hello! Do you know the ground clearence of the GT LRH? I read about people who say they scrape the pegs on almost every turn and that you have to be very carefull when leaning. Did this ever happen to you?
Thanks for the question. I haven't had that experience, but my skid plate did hit the ground in a particularly rough trail. Based on my own measurement, the ground clearance is around 6 to 6.5 inches. I think it's around the same as the Scrambler 900.
That’s rubbish I’ve had mine banked over and certainly no scraping some just make these comments as there not a fan of low ride heights but take it from an owner who’s ridden both it’s perfect for the shorter rider and u sacrifice very little
So, it was a good review especially for short people. 5'7" . Has this bike been to Baguio yet and if so did it make it up the mountain with little effort? Given another choice would you consider the 850 with a low seat?
Thanks for your comment Owen! I haven't ridden it to Baguio, but I rode it through the twisty mountain roads around that area and through Sierra Madre, so I guess similar conditions... inclines, loose asphalt and potholes caused by large trucks and buses, long queues of slow moving trucks that need to be overtaken (i.e. the not-so-glamorous parts of mountain roads in the region 😄 ). The bike performed very well with the scorpion STRs (I wouldnt know with stock tires though), it gripped the road very well, it didnt skid through the broken asphalt even on curves (with caution ofcourse). At one point I considered the 850, but people said it was much heavier than the tiger 900. I havent ridden the 850 yet and reviews say its a good bike, but I decided to just stick with my tiger 👍... it feels so agile on the twisties. 850 might be better offroad given that the tiger is a triple, but it can handle the job well enough.
@@MotoFaith Thanks for the reply. Stationed at Clark 67-68-70-71 Baguio then was heaven to me. Lived in San Pablo, Laguna. I miss the PI. Poor economy is preventing me from another bike purchase. Triumph is the way to go. Stick with the Tiger

Hi Kate, I'm actually enjoying it. I think I've done all that can be done to enhance its offroad specs like change to 70/30 tires, buy tougher skid plates, etc., and have been stretching it a bit in that area. It can manage, though as you said in your own review the ground clearance is sacrificed at some point. But I've managed to increase the height gradually thru the adjustable suspension. It's a tough bike too.
How are these bikes like to ride around metro manila traffic
Thanks a lot for your question 👍... the bike is actually very nimble and I can easily filter through with the smaller bikes (except in super tight spaces of course). Even with my panniers and top box, the bike is well balanced and not as heavy as the 1200 bikes. Actually, one reason why I haven't switched to the heavier and taller ADVs is that the reachability of this bike gives me so much confidence in really dense traffic scenarios, which is abundant in Manila and some other cities across the Philippines.

Thanks a lot for your comments. I think the Tiger GT LRH is now around PHP1M from the dealer. I can't remember the exact price of the saddle bags, but I purchased these from Ride Manila, so you could probably check the prices out from their website. I got 2 Kriega OS6 drybags and one Kriega OS18 bag.

@@MotoFaith hello, today the parts I asked for arrived, a heated seat and auxiliary headlights...
I didn't have time to test the lights but the seat when testing it is a brutal difference, quite comfortable, BUT I lost the height of the floor I had, we have to choose the height or comfort of the seat... As I have 1.69mt on the seat low I get to the ground quite well, and I get the vision on top of the visor, it's right in the middle of the vision. It was more for you to understand the difference between the seats and their height.
I am now with 5 thousand km and yes you are right the more km you have the more the exhaust sound gets thicker.

@@hugoferreira5742 Congratulations on your new seat and lamps! It's interesting to see the trade-off between the heated seat and overall seat height. I guess it's possible to lessen the preload adjustment, but that will then lessen ground clearance of the bike. Thanks for sharing!
