      Jason, I don't know what a family tree is (aside from the human ancestry type) but people grow fruit salad trees as a novelty where they'll graft several types of citrus onto one rootstock. I've read where folks have successfully grafted up to 4 varieties of avocado onto a single tree but i've not had the opportunity to see one.

  • @MinaBellonaAckerman
    @MinaBellonaAckerman Před 3 lety +1

    Also, matching the diameter isn't as important as ensuring cambium contact (basically some parts of the scion and the rootstock must be touching at certain points so that vital functions can be continued) sometimes the diameter is right but the cambium of one part isn't touching the other and the graft fails. A tip though is to place the graft in slightly nudged to the side so that at least there's two points of cambium contact (if not 4 points of contact) just thought I'd point this out since I didn't see it in your video. But yeah great content though! :D

    • @MinaBellonaAckerman
      @MinaBellonaAckerman Před 3 lety

      TL;DR place in your graft a bit crooked (it doesn't matter if one bit is sticking out at the end, as long as contact is ensured it should be okay) so that the inner barkish bits of the two seperate bits touch at least on some points

  • @NibirYou
    @NibirYou Před 2 lety +1

    My question is why you need to do that? For what? Sorry new for this kind of stuff. What it will do to the tree? I watch lots of videos but there are not telling why they need to do this?

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  Před 2 lety

      Hi BluBall, The reason we graft is because seeds are unpredictable. Some fruit grow "true to seed" while others do not. Avocados, apples, and certain varieties of mango do not grow true. If you plant their seed the resulting tree won't give you an identical fruit. In fact, the fruit can be quite different.
      Other fruit such as peaches, citrus, and other types of mango do grow true and you'll get an identical fruit.
      Also, like people, trees have to reach sexual maturity before they reproduce and grow fruit...that can take 10+ years but with grafting we take a cutting from an already sexually mature tree and we reduce the time to 3-4 years.

      Hi Gavin, Thanks for your question. Let me try and help with the confusion. The tree I took that clipping from is a Haden variety. Haden happens to be my favorite variety also.

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  Před 2 lety

      Rocket Man, thanks for the question. I think what you mean by "species" is "variety". All mangos are of the same species. I only make this clarification because grafting must be done within species but not within variety. You can graft any type of mango to any other type of mango.
