I was 15 years old when I got tickets to go to top of the pops with my friend Theresa. We were having a lot of fun dancing and screaming at all the bands. Gary Glitter and the glitter band were our favourites at that time. After they’d performed, a bouncer came up to us and asked us if we wanted to go back stage to meet them. My friend was so excited but I was apprehensive as it was close to my curfew to be home. We had an argument and I left as my mother, god love her, was an absolute tyrant. I asked T the next day if she’d gone back stage and she was silent and then teary. To this day (40+years) she has never told me what happened as I honestly believe she was traumatised. Three of his victims did try in 2007 after Top of the Pops went off the air. But they each thought they were on their own (the police didn't tell them 2 others had come forward with corroborating allegations), and CPS decided not to prosecute.

I have no doubt that he had some of the fiercest defenders whilst he was alive. So how do these things eventually come out? We wait until someone with enough power and position tells us "yes, this person is evil". Then, we are all allowed to say it, the thing we all knew anyway. We wait for another powerful, trusted authority to tell us that the previous powerful, trusted authority was slime. Then we pick someone else to fall in admiration with and follow to the next explosion. Despite how good and "right" it might feel, the need to follow and admire has a dangerous double edge that our era seems to still be at the mercy of.

peppersdog1 Because its better for the industry and us that it does. If its privatised it'll rely on advertising revenue which is a limited amount. ITVs programming has gone to pot with huge cuts because the cash it got from commercials has been watered down by competition with Sky etc. At the moment, what the BBC get from Licence /government is roughly equal to what the independent sector get in advertising revenue. If the BBC was to rely on adverts, the pot would be split with both sides taking huge losses and program quality would fall even more than it has. Also, the BBC produces shit loads of services that are important to the public but not lucrative and would disappear. This includes the World Service, 40 plus local radio stations, the Asian Network, Radio 6, BBC 4 and dozens of foreign service channels. You might not use them but many do.

I remember about twenty years ago, having an argument with two of my friends about Jimmy Saville: I said that I found him a strange man and that all his charity work struck me as insincere. They both rounded on me and jumped to his defence. In fairness to them, the general public had no hard evidence to believe that he was what we later found him out to be and I was only talking about my impression of the man, but I think if anything can be learned from Saville and his like it is that the consensus is often at odds with reality. Saville was untouchable for many reasons and one of those was that he was extremely popular.

I was a kid in the 70s and even then thought Saville was a creep. Then i lived in Crowthorne in Berskshire as an adult and Saville used to turn up and be around the village for the carnival with his Broadmoor connection and he gave me the absolute creeps.
My mother claims to have met him in 1954 and found him an obnoxious creep with an eye on young vulnerable girls even back then. She was 19 at the time and his eyes were on girls significantly younger. I never did think he was anything other than an obnoxious creep.

It was a different time back then. I was at school in the early 80s, and we all knew one of the teachers was a perv (actually a good teacher otherwise), but nobody actually did anything. Even the other teachers knew. 20 years later a classmate of mine went to the police, and the teacher pled guilty to that and various earlier crimes and went to gaol. I think today people would speak up earlier.

I heard about Jimmy Savile and dead bodies years ago when working in a hospital. One of the hospital theatre porters told me and to be quite honest I didn't give it much attention but did think 'that's a bit weird' and that's what I can't understand. If people in a hospital hundred's of miles from the place where he committed these crimes knew, how in the hell could the BBC and others around Savile not know. I had a foster daughter who was kidknapped by social services after a court ruled i was her legal gaurdian and social services were to stay away from her. they locked her up a room and got her addicted to heroine and forced her to have sex with anyone that paid enough. she was 13. she ran away and came back to me and told me what they were doing to her. But cause the police were looking for her she couldnt stay with me so we used to meet up now and then and i would give her food before she headed off to where ever she was hiding. Some of the men that visited her were high ranking police officers.

my mother was a mental health social worker from the mid 60's until the mid 90's and as such had dealings with some of the mental institutions that Saville was involved with. I remember her telling, very early on, that Saville was predatory but 'untouchable' through his manipulation of people and the system

I was 15 years old when I got tickets to go to top of the pops with my friend Theresa. We were having a lot of fun dancing and screaming at all the bands. Gary Glitter and the glitter band were our favourites at that time. After they’d performed, a bouncer came up to us and asked us if we wanted to go back stage to meet them. My friend was so excited but I was apprehensive as it was close to my curfew to be home. We had an argument and I left as my mother, god love her, was an absolute tyrant. I asked T the next day if she’d gone back stage and she was silent and then teary. To this day (40+years) she has never told me what happened as I honestly believe she was traumatised. Our fun, innocent children memories are wrapped up in this extremely troubling times at the BBC

John Lydon from The Sex Pistols hinted at what Saville was upto in a BBC radio interview which was never broadcast at the time. No, the reason the victims had to wait until Saville was dead was fear of being branded as liars by an entire nation that adored Jimmy Saville at the time. Three of his victims did try in 2007 after Top of the Pops went off the air. But they each thought they were on their own (the police didn't tell them 2 others had come forward with corroborating allegations), and CPS decided not to prosecute.

The problem was lack of evidence. It was all rumours and hearsay. If you try to expose someone purely based on rumours, and you can't prove your allegations, you will be destroyed. Why the fuck did the actual victims wait until after Savile's death before they came forward? They could've had him sent down decades ago. Or if not sent down, at least exposed, shamed and sacked.

There is a bizarre need to admire people and elevate them, place them on pedestals, that humans have. The most harmless form of it is kids that hero worship footballers, but adults still have it too. Its so powerful that they will convince themselves that what their eyes and ears are telling them is wrong because of the crushing fear of public humiliation, loss of job, or worse.
People with power should be subject of the MOST social doubt and scepticism, especially those that make us feel good about them *despite the fact we've likely never met them and most certainly do not know them*. The unscrupulous gain power through vocal followers and their overly rose tinted spectacles (no pun intended), and as with modern politics, let a lack of emotional control set their views on the person in concrete. Jimmy had his legion of fans and those who wished to be associated with him because of how that popularity reflected on them or their causes. I have no doubt that he had some of the fiercest defenders whilst he was alive.
So how do these things eventually come out? We wait until someone with enough power and position tells us "yes, this person is evil". Then, we are all allowed to say it, the thing we all knew anyway. We wait for another powerful, trusted authority to tell us that the previous powerful, trusted authority was slime. Then we pick someone else to fall in admiration with and follow to the next explosion.
Despite how good and "right" it might feel, the need to follow and admire has a dangerous double edge that our era seems to still be at the mercy of.

Except it lasts all of 2-3 seconds because the lyrics were shortened to "There's Earth and Air and Fire and Water" because for centuries humans were under the false pretense that those were the only 4 elements and that everything was made up of combining them in different mixtures (anything that couldn't be achieved this way was attributed to magic or gods).

If its privatised it'll rely on advertising revenue which is a limited amount. ITVs programming has gone to pot with huge cuts because the cash it got from commercials has been watered down by competition with Sky etc.
At the moment, what the BBC get from Licence /government is roughly equal to what the independent sector get in advertising revenue.
If the BBC was to rely on adverts, the pot would be split with both sides taking huge losses and program quality would fall even more than it has.
Also, the BBC produces shit loads of services that are important to the public but not lucrative and would disappear. This includes the World Service, 40 plus local radio stations, the Asian Network, Radio 6, BBC 4 and dozens of foreign service channels. You might not use them but many do.

I remember about twenty years ago, having an argument with two of my friends about Jimmy Saville: I said that I found him a strange man and that all his charity work struck me as insincere. They both rounded on me and jumped to his defence. In fairness to them, the general public had no hard evidence to believe that he was what we later found him out to be and I was only talking about my impression of the man, but I think if anything can be learned from Saville and his like it is that the consensus is often at odds with reality. Saville was untouchable for many reasons and one of those was that he was extremely popular.

It was a different time back then. I was at school in the early 80s, and we all knew one of the teachers was a perv (actually a good teacher otherwise), but nobody actually did anything. Even the other teachers knew. 20 years later a classmate of mine went to the police, and the teacher pled guilty to that and various earlier crimes and went to gaol. I think today people would speak up earlier.

I heard about Jimmy Savile and dead bodies years ago when working in a hospital. One of the hospital theatre porters told me and to be quite honest I didn't give it much attention but did think 'that's a bit weird' and that's what I can't understand. If people in a hospital hundred's of miles from the place where he committed these crimes knew, how in the hell could the BBC and others around Savile not know. Ive had run ins with social services over it. I had a foster daughter who was kidknapped by social services after a court ruled i was her legal gaurdian and social services were to stay away from her. they locked her up a room and got her addicted to heroine and forced her to have sex with anyone that paid enough. she was 13. she ran away and came back to me and told me what they were doing to her. But cause the police were looking for her she couldnt stay with me so we used to meet up now and then and i would give her food before she headed off to where ever she was hiding. my mother was a mental health social worker from the mid 60's until the mid 90's and as such had dealings with some of the mental institutions that Saville was involved with. And don't forget Savile's wild card... he raised so much money for charity. Even amongst those who suspected him, there would always be a seed of doubt... surely he does so much good, how could he need bad, he's just eccentric, but look at the GOOD he does... and could I live with myself if by bringing these rumours into the light, I ruin all that fundraising and good work. I've spoken to someone who worked there and who knew, and also another who was abused by a different D.J. at the BBC. Unless you are in their shoes, or at least speak to those people candidly, you will not understand how silence is the best option at the time.

This legilsation is in place not only to stop grown men like Saville abusing their position of power (even if the male concerned isn't famous - the power dynamic is overwhelmingly stacked in his favour by definition of his adulthood, which is part of the reason he's targeting minors) - but also to protect vulnerable young girls and boys from _themselves._ From their own mental immaturity.
Often these kids are in and out of care (like the Rotherham abuse scandal); they don't really have anyone to look out for them. Or they have a mother like Mandy Smith had - who in my opinion - should be in jail along with Bill Wyman.
When the victims do have decent parents to look out for them, it's amazing how often predators still claim "consent". I'm pretty sure Rolf Harris did when questioned. If that's the case Rolf - why didn't you go up to the girl's father and say "I'd like to take your twelve year old daughter on a date and then on to a hotel for a few hours, I'll pick her up at eight...alright Mister?"
But he didn't do that - did he fuck.

There were too many witnesses. Witnesses who didn't have anything to gain by talking - witnesses who in fact were then subject to "Why didn't you do anything then?" type interrogations. Francis Rossi, Bill Oddie, John Lydon. There were people who _saw_ the activity. There was an elderly lady on the news who spoke of watching Saville fondling a dying girl in a hospice. There were too many other people reporting events and consistency of testimony and MO is a clear red flag; they were on TV quite a bit over here in the UK (I wonder where you're from. You sound American, nobody says "doofus" over here).
These witnesses do not have a history of making false allegations against innocent men. They spoke out against Saville because he was guilty.
It is very telling to me that you didn't address the issue I raised regarding the moral and legal ramifications of _consent._ I suspect I really wouldn't want you to though. Sayonara son.

Until then I'd be grateful if you'd desist from using manipulative language. Don't put words in my mouth. Saville escaped justice. That _is_ something to get annoyed about. Historic child abuse: Sadly for the purposes of retribution - when many uncles, family friends, stepfathers crept into the bedrooms of 10 year old children in their care - they didn't molest those kids in front of 500 convenient witnesses. "Acquittal" doesn't necessarily mean "not guilty". Too often sexually motivated crimes are difficult offences to prove; or there are other problems such as the statute of limitations. Bill Cosby won't be prosecuted despite having told Larry King that he used to put spanish fly into women's drinks. The man even made a conspiratorial face and smirked when he described the action. The implication clearly being that the women concerned were _unaware_ they were being drugged. That's on 'CZcams' available to view. He will face no consequences and that's outrageous because it confirms the victims' testimony. In situations like this: it is what it is. You use your common sense. You do this to protect the public and out of respect for the victims - who absolutely deserve to see justice served. He should have faced trial, as should Saville.
It comes down to trusting the experience of police officers and clinicians who have decades of experience employing their judgement. Victims are often lucky if people who scarred them for life are ever brought to trial.
Savile thought by raising money for charities that he was buying a stairway to heaven. Said so himself.

One of my intake was a lad from Leeds who detested Jimmy Savile as a "bent bastard", so if a 16yo lad knew then, BBC executives must surely have known.
It's easy to say "why didn't Bill Oddie speak out" but he said the rumours he heard were that he was a groper, not a rapist. It may seem weird now, but while people back then knew about child molesters, they were always thought of as 'strangers in dirty raincoats'. Nobody thought about celebrities doing it, or even parents. It would have been very easy for him to talk his way out of it because people would have believed him.
He mentions Saville was a friend of Prince Charles. Now we know Prince Andrew is a friend of Ghislaine Maxwell... Yet I think he will be protected by his Royal privilege... What do you think?
