For more accurate information read the entire link above. My version is below (pardon my mistakes if any and don't take my personal political views seriously)
All this started with Vasco da gama reaching our great and wealthy continent's West coast. This Spanish expert sea farer took an arduous journey after hearing about the spices (it was black gold just like crude oil of the middle east after invention of automobile) from the Arab traders. It was the time in the history where European countries were looking for new worlds to settle. Then Dutch came followed by Portuguese and French. Naturally conflicts arose between them who should be in control of the trade. Of course the British known for colonising the countries all over the world came to know about all these trade wars much later. Because they were mostly focusing on the present day US of America at that time. The British East India Company came to India in the name of doing trade but for safely conducting business they brought the British governments army as well. The others left knowing the might of the British but kept a few small pieces (French had Pondicherry and Goa by the Portuguese. Dutch had none except their Forts built in Pulicat lake in Northern Madras and Tharanghambadi near Karaikal on the east coast of Tamil Nadu). Imagine whether Reliance India with the support of the Indian army today can go to some African country to expand their business empire today?. Impossible isn't it? But that is exactly what has happened in the late 1600 or early 1700s. Note that India came under British governments and Queen Victoria's direct rule only in 1857 after the sepoy mutiny initiated in the north. Prior to that it was chaos (thadi eduthavan ellam thandalkaran) You hear in the history books that Veerapandia Kattabomman was hanged (it happend in 1799) after a trial and judgement. The charges against him were that he failed to pay the taxes requested by the British Collector!. He actually was a palayakkarar of that region and serving the king Krishnadeva Rayar and suppose to deposit the collection of tax revenues to his treasury. How can a trading company which came to India for doing regular business can form a government like structure supported by a heavily armed military?. The answer lies in our infighting and lack of formal political infrastructure. Countless number of kingdoms and lack of good will between them to fight off the common foreign enemy who is dictating their own terms on us etc.
Since the British have mastered the art of governing people who are not their kind it became possible for them to rule India for more than 2 centuries. They however provided a uniform governing structure not only in our subcontinent but also our neighbouring Burma (now Myanmar) and Sri Lanka. Some of our own Indian people even liked their ruling and followed their lifestyle. Drinking morning coffee and cutting their hair instead of kudumi, choosing to wear pant shirt over pancha kaccham or veshti are some of the examples.
Couple of important things. 1. The British had a choice to decide which one to hold and which one to let it go USA or India?. Because they know they can not hold both simultaneously and far away from each other. They made a wise choice of India is easy to control. USA declared independence from the British rule in 1776 by George Washington with 13 eastern states. GW is an aggressive fighter and a military leader on par with the British army. Not like our kings who knew only to fight using ancient weapons.
2. The Indian people in general are peace loving, spiritual and do not give a shit about who is ruling them (Raman aandal enna Ravanan aandal enna) as long as their day to day life are not seriously disturbed.
However slowly some of our people realised that slowly the British looted our wealth and kept the majority of our people poor and divided to keep their power using cleverly implemented policies that was decided in London. Thus formed the Congress Party (not the one existing today which transpired and completely weakened) to fight for self determination. After many sacrifices in terms of wealth and personal health by countless patriots it happend in 15 August 1947.
Note that they held on South Africa with much more brutal oppression until the late 1990s with Nelson Mandela incarcerated almost 75% of his active life behind bars.
We now gave that option of ruling to our own selected few (taking public money, keep dividing us not only on caste lines but more recently on the more dangerous religious ideologies as well) in the name of democratic elections and in return a miniscule amount every 5 years. Believe me. I worked in the middle east for 5
years in a wealthy kingdom. It's not bad at all. Another huge factor in the British decision to give up on India is the most brutal WW-II that mankind has ever seen in its whole history which ended with two nuclear bombs in 1945. India was the least affected in that war but if it all WW-III starts (all the ingredients for such an event is brewing already in my humble opinion) it will be us who will suffer the most.
PS: Leave all the comparisons between the truly democratic nations in the world but just look at the following statistics.
1. The exchange rate in 1947 between the two nations was Rs. 3 (not huge at all) but today it is hanging around Rs. 75.
2. USA has produced Nobel laureates in all fields at least more than 100 (a vast majority of them have Jewish origin is another interesting fact). India a big anda (zero) since 1947. Sir CV Raman was British India and a few others of Indian origin have achieved that honor after immigrating and acquired foreign citizenship.
3. The world's top leading universities are in the US. And the ground breaking technologies in almost all the fields that impact human life around the world originate from there.
4.Almost all of the people irrespective of their national origin would gladly move and permanently settle in the US if given a chance.
Of course the recent events happening in the US is not very positive because the voters made a wrong choice and elected someone who do not believe in accepting diversity that made US the greatest country in the world since it was formed. Hopefully the voters will turn in the right direction again coming November.

உலகநாதன் என்ற பெயர் ஆங்கிலத்தில் Ulaganathan என்றுதானே வரவேண்டும். பிறகு ஏன் VOC என்றழைக்கிறோம்?
For a long time I thought it came from his birthplace Ottapidaram but no. If that is the case then it should be his first initial and not in the middle (for example CNA is used to mention Conjeevaram Nataraja mudaliar Annadurai another well known great leader and founding father of the DMK party but most our tamil people know him as Peraringar Anna) . His middle initial came from his father's name Ulaganayakam pillai for sure but sometimes with O also spelled as Olaganayakam pillai. See below the following Wikipedia link also shows this ambiguity:

His first initial must have come his grandfather's name Vallinayagam pillai. Perhaps VOC abbreviation rhymes well when you say it compared to VUC. Further proof is that the Tamil version of the abbreviation is very clear as the 5th letter in the prime alphabet Vu is denoting his father's name Ulaganatham pillai.
PS. If you say Conjeevaram these days many (including some modern residents of that town) will look at you with a strange face and ask Where is that place located in Tamil Nadu?. Kanchipuram or Kancheepuram is the new spelling for that town. But we still refer our great leader as CNA and not as KNA which will not be rhyming nice as well.

To my knowledge, it is Valliappan Oolaganathan Chidambaram (VOC). தமிழில் வ உ சி (சி என்பதை உச்சரிக்கும் போது Chi என்று உச்சரிக்க வேண்டும். சிலர் கூறுவது போல் Si அல்ல. ). Moreover, it was a practice in olden days to use Oo or O alone instead of U for உலகம் (as C for Conjeevaram instead of Kanchipuram now). Regards. V. GIRIPRASAD (69 yrs.)
