      I’m 50 and still play Kata Guruma. I just sit through on each attack and dump over the hip. Gone are the days of major standing Kata Guruma although still in my tool kit

    Great versions, Travis. I am a 5' 5 1/2" recreational judoka and I have been super pussed at the IJF removal of the Kata Guruma and their suspect reasoning for it. Of all the Judo moves I excelled it, it was by far the greatest equalizer against larger, heavier and stronger opponents and it was sebitrseily and unfairly taken away. It literally took me years to develop the Yoko Guruma as a replacement neutralizer move but to this day I still practice the Kata Guruma.

    • @jsl8461
      @jsl8461 Před 4 lety +2

      I posted elsewhere on this. You can still use kata-guruma and you can still use your tricep and elbow to elevate their leg (as long as your anchor your hand on a legal grip). But without being able to grab the leg, you need to be faster, more accurate, and more explosive. On the bright side, if you can throw do a clean kata-guruma without grabbing the leg, then you will be able to send them to the moon with the leg grab.
      Also, if you're concerned about throwing bigger guys, isn't something like drop seoi nage (or even tai otoshi, for the few people who have mastered it) usually the best throw against bigger opponents? They are primarily dependent on speed and timing. They don't require much lifting action (unlike uchi mata), they don't require you to get a dominating high grip (which is hard to reach on taller people), and they can be done from a distance (before a stronger opponent is able to make a power grip on you).

      @TravisStevensgrappling  Před 4 lety +2

      Yeah I agree and Yoko Garuma just isn't as strong of a through when compared to a classic Kata Gaurma!

      @@jsl8461 Totally with you on this as the drop Ippon Seoi Nage is pretty much my toku waza along with the Yoko Guruma at the moment. 🙂 The Kata Guruma used to be it.
      One thing I do have to say though is that disallowing the move did force me to explore others so it wasn't all bad. 🙂

  • @jsl8461
    @jsl8461 Před 4 lety +8

    This video is amazing, thanks a lot Travis!
    Also, for those of you interested in how to make these IJF legal -- you can still use your arm to elevate the opponent's leg; you just have to anchor your hand to a legal grip above the belt, and then you are allowed to use your tricep and elbow to clip their inner thigh. A common competition variant is to anchor their grip on the sleeve, similar to what Travis does in #4, but you can legally grip low on the lapel too (above the belt).
    Of course, without being able to grab the leg, the timing, explosiveness, and accuracy needs to be better.
    I always try to look at the bright side -- to do a fireman's carry under IJF rules, everything else has to be sharper and cleaner to compensate for the lack of a leg grab. If you can throw for ippon without grabbing the leg, then when you do some other sport where leg grabs are legal, like wrestling, or Sambo, or BJJ, the guy is going to go flying.

      @TravisStevensgrappling  Před 4 lety +3

      Correct! It's just not as effective. Thats why it never really made it into my style of judo on the competition circuit. I used to use it all the time back when you could grab the leg though.

    I love number 3 as it looks like it may work when they sense that I'm going for my favourite sumi gaeshi and posture back up and turn into me. I never thought about using sumi gaeshi in combo with kata guruma. It was always sumi, uchi mata, kouchi, ouchi mix for me. Great video like always!

    • @jsl8461
      @jsl8461 Před 4 lety +1

      If you compete in IJF then you can still use #3 but you need to grab the sleeve to make it legal (can still use your elbow and shoulder to elevate their legs, as long as your hand is anchored to a legal grab above the belt).
      Kouchi, ouchi, uchi-mata, sumi-gaeshi -- that's a classic combination! Teddy Riner is fantastic at it (especially ouchi, uchi-mata, sumi-gaeshi).

      @@jsl8461 I stopped training judo about the same time when they completely banned leg grabs and concentrated more on bjj as it seemed more open-minded and reminded me old time judo days when all the grip breaks were allowed and more newaza time allowed. I still love judo as an art but hate direction where it's going as a sport.

    • @jsl8461
      @jsl8461 Před 4 lety +1

      @@shakazulu6512 Heh, personally I love the new IJF rules as a spectator and even as a competitor. There are way more ippon's, and way less stalling (especially for light weights). Pre-2013 light weight judo had guys standing in low stances, avoiding and breaking grips most of the match, staying far away, and using leg grabs as a way to show activity and potentially get the referee to hit the opponent with passivity. Nowadays 80% of the matches at major international competitions end in ippon (except for the Olympics and World Championships, which is lower...but still way better than the 2000's).
      But I prefer the old rules for training purposes.
      BJJ is a great, safe sport. The only problem is it's not a good way to train standup technique; for high level IBJJF, most athletes will pull guard (heavy weights are the exception).

    • @shakazulu6512
      @shakazulu6512 Před 4 lety

      I agree from the spectator point of view and to popularise the sport the new rules are better but I find them to limiting for the practitioner. I don't like that instead of looking for technical solutions to the problem they trying to fight it by more regulations. This kills players creativity and forces him to be more physical which again is more fun to watch for a random guy on the TV.
      I think jiu jitsu will change in the coming years as more and more guys realize they suck on their feet and try work on that. It just sucks that IJF stops high level guys you from competing in both judo and bjj and limits the way athletes can make their living. Travis is a prime example of that.
