This is three years later and I am learning to make these Suffolk puff/yoyo’s. You did a wonderful presentation and gave me a couple of ideas. I’m afraid my needle work is not very worthy. I must admit I rather hear call them Suffolk puff, why on earth it was changed I don’t remember. I’m old. Great tutorial, I’ll use Suffolk puff from now on and explain that yo-yo was a spin off. Im starting a little sewing book. I dont care whats where in the book. Im just stitching things, making cool,pages with yo yos on some pages, doing some sashiko on a few pages, trying other types of embroidery and using many different fabrics. This is so much fun and enjoyment. I hwve been making junk journals. Then i began creating things with clay. But i have miswed sewing so much. Im 74 and i made many kids outfits when my girls were small. I sewed many other items in my life but i stopped quite a few years ago. So this has been ao much fun

Some lovely ideas there for my slow stitching projects. Thank you. Do I remember correctly, I used to make a thin cardboard circle the same size as the finished centre, which I removed before finishing the Puff off. It gave me a lovely sharp edge to the finished circle.
When I was a young grade school girl in Pennsylvania, both boys and girls learned how to make these during art in the fifth grade. We called them “Yo-Yos.” I’ve been making them ever since! Love stitching them onto so many things. We were also taught Swedish Weaving, basic embroidery stitches and how to purl.
I am so happy to see you using yoyos (Suffolk's puffs). I bought a big package of fabric at a thrift store once! I thought it was all fabric! Right in the middle was a big package of Suffolk puffs of all sizes all ready to use!

I love these yoyos. I dont remember where I learned to make these, but I've done some of them on purses that I've made from old blue jeans. I've also stuffed then with the toy stuffing them to look like poppies ready to bloom. I've also beaded them. I absolutely love your strip of them !!
I was doing raw edges and then I saw someone that had turned the edge under....I thought I was doing them wrong. I guess I wasn't. Ha ha.....I love watching you create. I'm working on my first few pages in my book. Thankyou so much for sharing.
Thank you for the tutorial!! The person who taught me how to sew always made suffolk puffs the second method way, however she tucked the raw edges underneath to look neater lol! I'm attempting them myself so I can make a gift for a friend, thank you!

I am so inspired to do something like this but do not have the GORGEOUS fabrics and lace pieces you do. I might have to try to do a more modern look....lets see what I can come up with. They have always been called yo-yos in the United States. There is a Victorian story that a young woman was to sew 999 together and the 1000th one would be in the lining of her husbands coat. If you sewed 1000 together you would be an "old maid." Yo- yo making seems to have a revival about every 20 or 30 years. I see quite a few items done in 30's and 40's style fabric and lots of craft items from around the 80's. I have only seen them with the edges folded under which would make sense for clothing, blankets and things that get washed.

I never really liked the Yo Yo's/Super Puffs but the way You put them together looks absolutely beautiful! When You make these long strips do you sew them together to make a Table Runner or Small Quilt?
could one cut the circles with pinking shears?? I like seeing frayed pieces ( for other people ) but not for me. your voice has me thinking you are the actress in the series " Line of duty " listen to her and you will see.
It would be nice to have a mat or folded towel down, to stop the slamming of the tools and especially the scissors. With earbuds on low, it hurts the ears.

"yoyo" is American term..in Canada its still called Suffolk Puffs by most people who make them. l'm enjoying your channel jan. 2021 😷❤️️

Hi Kristina, when you can, try thrift shops or garage sales, but stay safe. Good luck hunting for fabric.

I think they became known as yo-yos in the USA. They do kind of look like one side of a yo-yo toy for kids.

This was just a long hanging but you could do it for anything
