    I like the way he's not about the money. A lot of painters are all about how much they get for a painting. They measure success by the amount they get. I never put my price up in 25 years. Because I love to paint for the average person who appreciates the art soooo much more than the rich. The rich just buy them because they can. Usually means nothing to them. When you put a painting in an average persons house they are talking about that art for there rest of their life. They treasure it like it's the best thing they ever had. Iv made many people cry with paintings Iv done for them, many people, but never a wealthy person.

    Loved how he’s relatable! The huge sell if his painting doesn’t seem to have changed him or made him arrogant. Seems like a very down to earth guy.

      He is! But he already has been a huge Star in the music world in his past life. I had the chance to meet him in 2002 and he didn't change at all. And at the time he was already huge in that Neo Metal scene, making magazine covers with his band 🙂

      Speaking about "human connections". I love this podcast and all the others because, they give me that human connection. It is refreshing to hear artists talk about the emotional and mental grind they go through every time they produce art. I can relate with that, and to hear them talk about the same, is comforting.

      No, a legend takes decades to earn. Don’t throw that word around so easily. They are good artists but not legends and probably never will be.

    My thought on ai. As someone who knows the baseline of how ai works and as an artist myself, as it is rn. I think it’s a totally unethical. Ai takes in images and mashes them together to make “new” things. Algorithms don’t take inspiration. They don’t take in human emotion. They do what they’re told in code and spit out mashed up and usually ugly or very smoothed in images. And it’s unethical cause it is stealing. Ai databases get filled without permission, actual artists work and then mash up with others to make an image. No matter how someone tries to spin it, it’s not inspiration or reference. It’s just plain stealing. Plus most artists make art to express themselves. To me real artists do it to express and put their passion into. People who want cheap knockoffs in 5 minutes, aren’t artists. They’re consumers who don’t want to pay for skill. Or tech bros to make money off of real work.

    • @XNY_Music
      @XNY_Music Před rokem +8

      It's a tool and it needs to be learnt in order to get the most out of it. It's not meant to replace artists and it allows ordinary people who are not artists, the opportunity to create something artistic and in doing so it gets more people interested in art and in the process it elevates the work of artists, by appreciating the skill involved. As for stealing, no its not stealing, created works can be influenced by a look or oeuvre of an established artist but they can never be passed off as one of your works because they do not have the provenance of one of your works. I use it because it allows me to visualise my wildest ideas without wasting a canvas, my oil paints and my time. It's not human art, it's AI art.

    • @JacobDuane
      @JacobDuane Před 5 měsíci

      AI art is subjective, for now. It's only going to get better and even the fake "smoothed" aspect will be gone, leaving us with absolutely no way to tell other than some kind of digital signature. I'm really on the fence bc as a tool to create original art, it's trash to me. But as a tool to help inspire true artists it is pretty great, but a fine line.

    • @FundamentosdoDesenho
      @FundamentosdoDesenho Před 2 měsíci

      It is stealing! No one can use someone’s work to make a profit without consent. Those companies are thieves, and whoever uses their products is taking part on the theft.

    I really enjoyed this conversation with Mark and yourself. Not just about the painting but exploring the elements within human connection. Just as your interview explains those things that make being human intriguing and difficult with so many different layers. Yes, we need to show up and be present in the moment, that in itself sets the stage for many possibilities but the one opportunity to enjoy the space, to know we can make those decisions to focus on that one task like I am with exploring lots of ways to paint sea foam hitting the beach, some days I just paint over the top and start again but I learn from what I did before, I don't get lost in the time lost or method of not achieving the look I want. It's as your conversation leads to, those things that make painting meaningful, that measure of success. We're so thankful that we have people like yourself Andrew, that is offering your knowledge to many people and though you are successful as an artist applying yourself in this modern age, your giving back while also adding a wonderful human perspective to it all. Being able to communicate through art is super great, but stepping out beyond the easel and being real can be very difficult, yet it helps us grow as people which definitely must help our own attitude towards life and how we show up as ourselves. Being human is a blessing and a beautiful thing, being able to celebrate that in whatever we do has so many rewards, even in the challenging and tribulations there is ways to change, to adapt and to explore. Survival is that one answer of 'YES I WILL OR NO I WONT, AND NO MATTER WHAT, IM GOING TO BE OK'. Many blessings and keep going well. Love the Tisch daggers by the way, interesting to hear about Mark's brushes and process, awesome human being with knowledge and growth through adversity.

As an oil painter myself, I'm deeply in love with Mark's work (especially the use of luminiousity and contrast). I am getting back into my art after a 65 year absence. As part of your academy learning almost too much to process…but: AI! I have spent two weeks looking at a plethora of AI CZcamss and found that the tools are excellent, however there are many who have no art ability claiming to have as they solely use the AI generated images…used as a tool allows me to play with a variety of compositions, the truth is as M and you state “creative hand gives the work of art that personal connection, not the photo or computer”…blessings and happiness new year.

    Thanks man for this video. Love both of you. On AI- personally, my biggest concern as a painter is painting, and even if a robot can paint a Rembrandt one day, it doesn't take away my opportunity to go out and paint a Hughey (me). I completely 100% agree with Mark. It's about pushing yourself to be a great painter with a desire to achieve excellent quality. And the beauty of art is quality can be different for each artist, the attributes of a work that are important to the artist are unique to the artist. That's a matter of the soul, very human and very special. Thanks for doing what you do, it's good for my soul. And thanks to Mark for sharing his insights. 😊❤

    OMG!!! WOW!!! What do you say about that awesome art "they're very nice"..no way...they are stunning. Incredible.. that one with the sun on the clouds - he certainly knows how to capture the light, or the Native Americans - the backgrounds were up front and centre!! or the last one with the enormous clouds being the focal point in the whole painting with the tiny cowboy seemingly insignificant but not.... don't want to waffle on.. but did I hear Mark say he was asked to lower the price or even negotiate on his art...people should be offering to pay double because he is not charging enough.....mmm I'm only10 mins into this video cheers from WA and a big THANK YOU to you both. OK I've watched the whole episode now and thank you Andrew for bring Mark to us. I am not a student but I am a follower/subscriber off your art channel - unfortunately I do not do FB, Insta' etc so what I see here I am most appreciative of. AI.. anyone (well not me but most people) can learn how to use a computer but not everyone has the talent to paint like either yourself or Mark. I used to make my own cards but go to a market and people say the photos on my cards are nice but then go to the stall next door and buy 6 for $2 computer generated ones...so false. I don't even like changing my photos, what I take is what I paint, if I'm going to change it so much with computer programs/apps etc then why did I take the pic in the first place. I agree with what Mark said about AI making kids brains into much.. you only have to see how many problems kids have because of technology today.. I hear the term "kids are addicted to their phones etc"...where are the parents they should just set down the rules 'no phone at the table'. Only have a hour or so of tech a day. teach them to play and socialise not troll their 'friends'.. that's not friendship and it will not teach them life skills. Again quoting Mark people want to see how a game is played not just someone who has practised kicking goals over and over or hitting aces to the same corner but cant play a decent game.. that's not sportsmanship and its not interesting or exciting.. I think all high school students should watch videos like this, not just for the subject of art but the subject of life. I laughed at Mark exchanging his daily activities with his wife.."I painted a horses head today"... i love that you both still interact with your families when you can and its not all about squirreling yourselves away in your studios all day every day...life still happens around you you need to participate sometimes in between your genius moments. Apologies from this 70 year old chickie from Western Australia for the long diatribe - thanks for an awesome video Andrew and to Mark thank you so much for your time especially as we could all see how much pain your were in. I hope your holidays went well, your back got better (buy yourself a TENS Machine - Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation they are brilliant...the size of a mobile phone a gadget for pain.. they work) and I wish you luck in your move to Arizona. I will certainly be looking at your channel too :)... OUTSTANDING!!!!!

    Great interview guys. Really enjoyed hearing about Marks successes that came from following his heart and instincts. Not always an easy choice but I believe that If we run with our God given talents, we will eventually realize our best selves.
    Great stuff!

    I was reluctant to watch this, knowing that I’m a beginner artist-no shows, no fame but I’m glad I did! The question and answer about what he was exploring or trying to push I can relate to because I’m always trying to figure out what I need to do better or if there’s a different direction I want to take! Bottom line, inspiring

      No need to compare yourself with these guys they are just so damned interesting to listen to no matter what your age.. Im 70.. I think kids could learn a lot of life lessons from listening to Mark. Happy painting no matter what stage you are at, as long as you are enjoying it. We dont all have the luxury of genius :)

    Thank you for this, fascinating. Re: AI, I think in terms of history and the impact of photography to the artists of the late 1800's and early 1900's. With this historical perspective and the advantage of hindsight, when applied to the impact of AI to today's world of art, I see a clear path. Yes, there will be an impact quite similar, and yet very different. We will understand with the passage of time the true cost. There will be those who see the advantages and others who are crushed in the wake of it all. As an example, portraiture. Prior to photography portraits were in the hands of artists. With photography anyone could obtain a likeness. With time, we appreciate Sargent, Bouguereau, Klimt, even Van Gogh and so on. Mark said "the human element". It is more than that, it is the act of creation. No machine to this day can create. They can only alter what already exists.

      I think the main reason why portraiture has survived is the fact, that a painting is not just a snapshot, but an experience that comes with an emotional connection to long term memory. A painted portrait is kind of like a celebration. Because of that, there will be little excitement to even look at what AI will do. The automated portrait is just what the label say: artificial. Who wants to look at an artificial standardized industrial image anyway? So the impact of AI might turn out to be surprisingly low long term.

    Hi guys, I've commented about AI before and I feel that it's the artist who interests most of us. As in: how did he/she get to that creative practice, how did they get the inspiration to put their lives into their enterprise? It sure ain't money! Art is an expression of our humanity. A mirror of our emotions and creating something from nothing is more human than any technology created by said humans. Cheers.
