  • Jerry Palladino ‪@motorman857‬ recently attended ChampSchool in Homestead Miami, and chatted with our Lead Instructor and 2021 King of the Baggers, Kyle Wyman ‪@KyleWyman33‬ about something they both live and love: riding baggers!
Listen in as the two discuss techniques and approaches that are shaping modern motor officer training and how racing impacts the design, control inputs, and safety of all riders.

The guys who say they don't need a riding school because they have been riding for XX years are ALWAYS the ones who need it the most.

As a guy who only rode cruisers for 20 years, I know firsthand .
I only rode cruisers for 20+years, then mysteriously wound up at a school with a new sport bike.
I learned more hard technique in that one day school than I did the two decades prior!
      It’s dangerous though,
Next thing I knew I was getting my racing license!!!😳

Champ U has been invaluable to my riding! I started my Harley adventure with an XL Roadster during the pandemic. Boy I had some pretty scares riding the canyons, trying not to run wide. That’s when I found you guys and started improving dramatically by applying what I learned.
With a little bit of miles under my belt on that lighter Harley, I upgraded last October to a Breakout 117! Even the guys at the dealership told me to be very careful with the curves on this new bike, since it was not meant for canyons. Well, it turns out what I learned with you guys applies amazingly well on this motorcycle too! Lots of fun rides in canyons and tight turns where I live (Oregon)
Just finished the second course “Traffic Survival” Lots of great information and defensive technics. Thank you guys!!

      Ain’t it the truth?
I started out on cruisers in the early 80’s, and oddly wound up at a school with a sport bike in 05.
I thought I knew what I was doing, but in that one day I learned more than the 20+ years prior.
Next thing I knew, I was getting my racing license!😂
Retired from racing now, but my Ultra Classic is outfitted with racing suspension and heads turn when they see this old guy hanging off a 900lb. Bagger!!!😎🤘🏻

Trail braking was a game changer for me! I have a Suzuki Boulevard C90T and a Gold Wing, and learning about trail braking really upped my game. I'm not an aggressive rider by any stretch of the imagination, but as Jerry said, we should be using the best techniques out there that are available regardless of the style of bike we ride or the length of time we've been riding. Kyle also said a VERY key thing at the 10:40 (and forward) mark. He said, "In order to grow the sport we gotta put the right techniques in the hands of the riders." Tribal knowledge not shared helps NO ONE, and that's why I love these types of interviews and demonstrations because I feel like I'm the rider they are talking to who needs to see and hear these right techniques. Thank you so much, guys, for your great insights!! I feel more equipped to hit the road again tomorrow for another long ride through the beautiful roads of northeastern Tennessee!

      That’s a fact my friend.
The two “communities” don’t really interact. I know,
as I’m an old lifelong HD cruiser guy who weirdly ended up as a sport bike racer so I know both worlds intimately.
The “cruiser crowd” (even moped riders for that matter) definitely needs the “tradecraft” that these kind of courses teach, because you’ll never learn them by logging miles.
You just “don’t know what you don’t know”. 👍🏻

As always it’s great information! But the main takeaway should be take a training class if you’re going to ride a motorcycle. Slow speed or high speed at some point whether slow or fast you will find yourself at the motorcycles extreme point! Thank you Champ School, Jerry and Kyle.

So cool to see Jerry here. He helped me a ton as a new rider. I practice the principals and techniques he teaches. I'd love to go to champ school on my Victory Vision. Ps. I thought indians are the fastest... 😉

I love the inclusion of cruisers and baggers - I've been trying to convince people that rider training isn't just for sport bikes for ages.

Let me just say I never went to this school.
I rode hogs exclusively for over two decades, and through a weird set of circumstances, wound up at a school with a new sport bike.
I learned more “Hard craft” in that one day than the entire 20+!!!
Even worse, a couple months later I wound up getting my racing license.😂
I view it like fighting. No matter how good you are or think you are, you’ll be exponentially better when you’re trained.

Its nice to learn both as mixing the low speed and high speed techniques will result in Motogymkhana (or fun!) which are taking the low speed courses as fast as possible while still maintaining precision.

    • @Old-n-slo-locked-n-leaned
      @Old-n-slo-locked-n-leaned Před 11 měsíci +1

I agree. The police style rodeos, historically, required more precision and less speed than motogymkhana. Within the last 5 years, the rodeos have opened up to civilians and things are changing. Elite rodeo competitors are going much faster with amazing precision by utilizing the front brake to do things that were previously taboo. Now the rodeos have different events, some are very very tight and require extreme use of available space and some are timed but still tight which require both precision and speed techniques similar to motogymkhana. The difference is that police rodeos require quick, precise and tight turns where gymkhana is a bit more open in the turns.

This would be great if they actually gave a few tips instead of just talking about who’s best to teach them. Good advertisement for them I suppose. Disappointing as a tip video and kinda frustrating.

My first thought: If you want to go fast, do not ride a bagger.
My second thought: if you want to go fast, do not ride any Harley.
My third thought: If you do want to go fast on a Harley bagger, you will be disappointed by this video, which is essentially a commercial.
