I'm glad you're telling everyone that SPAM is much better fried. Most people have looked down on it because they eat it out of the can. SPAM Brand finally wised up recently with their new "Don't Knock It Til You've Fried It" campaign. Your deep-frying of the whole musubi adds an all new complexity.

I ate Spam as a child out of necessity with 8 children to feed. Big family. I have not had it in a long time, but I might just give it a try. Following your recipes are so easy and you always make things look and taste so good. Satashi must have been very hungry. He was drooling at the sight of the food. Happy eats guys. JC

I pan fry slices of spam then I use Kraft singles slices to make a grilled spam and cheese sandwich using ordinary white bread and a cup of tomato soup on the side . I can go with out seaweed and rice .

I always said Hawaii and it's local people know what tastes good. In fact the state of Hawaii is keeping the SPAM Company in business. LOL...Asians are smart in taking simple ingredients and making a meal out of it. All of Asia has created different recipes with SPAM.

Great recipe! I made it tonight and it turned out great. I altered the recipe slightly by using tempura batter instead of flour and unagi sauce instead of terriyaki. So yummy!

  • @stephenwmsmith

I found, if using the spam can as your mould, you should put a nice big piece of plastic wrap inside. This gives you a nice clean way of getting your spam musubi out, and if you are taking it somewhere else to eat, its a nice way to keep it wrapped up before you wrap your nori around it. This is how I do it anyways.

America has a stigma as well around SPAM, mostly calling it "Mystery Meat". While it is a mechanically separated meat, it is a fine source of protein I am mostly concerned about the sodium levels. That being said, it is still delicious, easy to prepare, stores well and is a somewhat affordable source of protein being red meat. In the area in which I live, all the ingredients are readily available for this recipe, and a can of SPAM only costs approximately $2.50-3.50. Plus who can say no once they taste some tasty pan fried SPAM in Musubi or fried rice form??

Guy Mats you can always cook spam for however long you want depending on how much fat you want to render. But be wary, it becomes dry if one tries to be too health conscious and cook out all the fat. Of course adjust heat accordingly.
