- Cab ride on the intercity services between Utrecht - Schiphol - Arnhem - Nijmegen and Amsterdam. Today I have an extra long video for you guys. Two weeks ago there was a lot of waiting in the shunting video and I know that can be boring to look at. But it's also part of my job. On my channel I'd like to give you a full presentation of my job and that includes shunting.
But... to make a compromise I'm going to take you on a 3.5 hour drive through the country. Most of my shift I recorded that day on my GoPro. I hope you will like it.
0:00 Utrecht Centraal
We start our journey in Utrecht and take the intercity service to Schiphol Airport.
2:40 Utrecht Zuilen
4:50 Maarssen
7:20 Breukelen
12:42 Abcoude
14:10 Amsterdam Holendrecht
15:15 Amsterdam Bijlmer Arena
On our way to Schiphol we have a stopover in Amsterdam Bijlmer Arena that will take a few minutes. This is done because there's too much traffic going on between Arena/Duivendrecht and Schiphol Airport.
24:51 Amsterdam RAI + Amsterdam Zuid
32:00 Schiphol Airport
After Schiphol the train number will be changed to a number with a 7 in front of the normal train number. This means the train is empty and is to be shunted away to Hoofddorp Opstel (train yard) in this case.
40:10 Hoofddorp + Hoofddorp Opstel
In Hoofddorp Opstel our train is split in two. On our way back to Schiphol Airport we have only 6 carriages left of the 10 we had on our first ride. Rush hour is over, so that's why we shorten the trains. Less energy consuming and less train managers needed on the train as well.
49:09 Schiphol Airport
58:30 Amsterdam Zuid
1:03:51 Amsterdam RAI
1:06:24 Amsterdam Bijlmer Arena
At Amsterdam Bijlmer Arena we need to wait for a few minutes again. This is because the IC's between Amsterdam and Eindhoven run every ten minutes. To fit this train in that schedule it needs to wait a little at Arena. Later departure from Schiphol Airport is no option because there's too much other traffic going on there. It's a big puzzle.
Between Bijlmer Arena and Utrecht you can see loads of trains passing by. We have 4 sprinters, 10 IC's, 1 international train and 2 freight trains in each direction every hour between these stations. Our train gives a perfect connection to the train in the Eindhoven direction. Accept for now, because we have a very small delay. But o worries for the passengers. The next IC to Eindhoven is there in just a few minutes. Love that! :)
1:13:15 Amsterdam Holendrecht
1:14:18 Abcoude
1:19:57 Breukelen
1:22:23 Maarssen
1:25:28 Utrecht Zuilen
1:27:18 Utrecht Centraal
1:34:39 Utrecht Vaartsche Rijn
1:37:34 Bunnik
1:39:27 Driebergen-Zeist
1:45:44 Maarn
1:51:50 Veenendaal-De Klomp
1:55:30 Ede-Wageningen
2:01:53 Wolfheze
2:03:28 Oosterbeek
2:04:53 Arnhem Centraal
We continue our journey to Arnhem and Nijmegen. At our arrival in Arnhem we receive an emergency call from the train dispatcher telling there is a person walking beside the tracks between Arnhem and Dieren. Not our path, but because of the emergency call you can hear me hitting the brakes a little. Why? Well, as off this point the driver must drive on sight with a maximum speed of 40km/h.
On the rest of the journey you can enjoy the great views and the many kilometers passing our window.
2:10:50 Arnhem Zuid
2:12:48 Elst
2:15:45 Nijmegen Lent + Nijmegen
On our way back to Amsterdam we run the 3000 IC instead of the 3100. This intercity makes a stop at Veenendaal-De Klomp instead of Driebergen-Zeist.
2:24:06 Elst
2:26:00 Arnhem Zuid
2:29:45 Arnhem Centraal
2:35:20 Oosterbeek
2:36:42 Wolfheze
2:40:46 Ede-Wageningen
2:46:25 Veenendaal-De Klomp
This way both stations have a 30 minute IC-connection during the whole day. Also we pass Utrecht again, but now you'll see we won't make a stop at Amsterdam Bijlmer Arena.
2:55:10 Maarn
2:58:12 Driebergen-Zeist
3:00:34 Bunnik
3:03:56 Utrecht Vaartsche Rijn
3:05:38 Utrecht Centraal
3:11:00 Utrecht Zuilen
3:13:33 Maarssen
3:15:48 Breukelen
3:21:10 Abcoude
3:22:35 Amsterdam Holendrecht
3:23:30 Amsterdam Bijlmer Arena
3:24:34 Duivendrecht
3:26:49 Amsterdam Amstel
Then we stop at Amsterdam Amstel. On that specific line we have 6 IC's, 4 sprinters, 1 international and 2 freight trains an hour per direction. Just over 2 tracks. The smallest interruption on the tracks causes huge problems for our schedules. But at about 95% of the time our trains run perfectly on time!
3:30:13 Amsterdam Muiderpoort
3:33:40 Amsterdam Centraal
I hope you enjoyed this very long ride. Next week there will be a WARP SPEED video of this one. Enjoy your weekend! Cheers!

Stefan, this is absolutely amazing! Cheers from Moscow, Russia.
I’ve had a great journey all over Germany and Netherlands in 2009 by trains during Winter. I absolutely enjoy the scenery and that smoothness when no one hurries the time, everything is at its natural pace and whatever is made or built is simple and beautiful.
Wow, thank you so much for your compliment! :D And so glad to hear you liked traveling in our country in 2009. Since then everything has become a lot more busy than back then. Hope you can visit again after the COVID is gone! :D Cheers!
@@MachinistStefan Thank you, Stefan! Since your country is deep in my heart, I hope I’ll have a chance to visit it again. I wish you all the very best!
❤🎉🥰😍🤩
Y'all have the coolest architecture.
Thanks :D We're proud of it too :D
Dutch cab ride: Whistle while you work.
German cab ride: Dead silence.
There are more drivers who do that :D But I'm one of the few. :D
And Japanese Cab ride: Always signals check.(With finger pointing)
My Grand Father did that all the time. Its a Dutch thing.
You mean the whistling Jack? 😁😁
First ride in Netherlands. :) Beautiful country, interesting journeys and lots of trains. What more can one ask! Nice whistling!!!
Thank you so much! 😁😁
The Dutch rail network looks so smooth! Great video :)
Thanks 😁😁
It is smooth and very silent
😘the people are like their enviroment; robots
Great video :)Your stations look all so modern, new and nice,-👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks Daan! Yes we try our best to have awesome looking station for our passengers. Stations with all passengers need during their trips.
TOP!!!!
Ja, fijn is dit he? :D
Tussendoor volgen versnelde videos. 😁
I wish we had this great Railway network in Sweden. Thanks for sharing
My pleasure! 😁😁
This cabview video is so awesome, many thanks for sharing! My favorite is when you come to Hoofddorp Opstel at 09:38.
Hi there! :D What do you like so much about Hoofddorp Opstel? :D Like shunting video's? Make sure to check out some other videos. :)
Once again an outstanding experience,a thoroughly enjoyable ride...
Thank you so much Barry! :D
Hi there Stefan, well we've been meandering with you for quite some months now and enjoying the journey, always so good to be out and about with you in our favourite country. The cab view is immersive and very relaxing I find. Anyway just wanted to drop by and say thank you from a fellow wanderer.
Hi! Thank you so much for this great compliment! Always nice to hear from my fans. :D Next Friday I'll publish a new video again. Stay tuned and stay safe. :D
Perfektné super 😃😃😃😃.
Veľmi prekrásne natočené video 😃😃😃😃.
V Holandsku som ešte nebol 😃😃😃😃 , zato sú

Ešte raz , veľmi prekrasne natočené video 😃😃😃😃😃.
Thanks Milan :D And you're more than welcome to visit The Netherlands! :D
Helemaal mee eens! Het is een flinke verbouwing! 😀😀😎

Thank youuuu :D :D
My favorite VIRM. Have the favorite place to sit on the second floor right behind the door to the right where one seat is standing.
😁😁 I totally agree!
The railway tracks are in exceptional good condition.
They are! 😁😁💪
Thank you so much Maria! :D Glad you enjoyed this video! :D
Enjoyed that long one from you, Stefan - three and a half hours worth. I have always wondered why the top speed for the majority of lines is 140kph - now I know due to the softer soil. Have a good week, good sir.👍🏼
Hi Ian! Thanks for that great compliment again. It took some of my time too. Good to hear the appreciation. 😁
Actually... ATB with speed 160 is possible. Between Hoofddorp - Leiden - Den Haag vv for example. Thalys has the possibility to run 160km/h on ATB. 😉😉😉
It's music to my ears hearing vintage whistle warning for closing doors!
😁😁😁 I like that too!
OMG ! Big difference with my country France : No garbage and no dirts on the ground, all is clean and bright, i love it !
Welcome in Holland. 😁😁😁
It's gorgeous.
Thanks! 😁😁
it's super organised and cool, love it.
🙏🙏😁
Dankjewel Frank! 😁😁😁👌
Lovely ride with the "Happy Driver Whistle" - all good!
Thank you so much :D :D
Beautiful rail system and country.
Thanks David :D
Lovely video, a good way of seeing The Netherlands. I prefer these longer videos, I can watch each segment or the whole thing if I want to.
Good to hear. But this is a special... Because it takes too much of my private time if I do this every two weeks. 😜😜 Glad you enjoyed it! 😁
@@MachinistStefan One question for you. The last signal you passed entering Hoofdorp Opstel was a flashing yellow I think. I thought that was to indicate "next signal is a steady yellow". Or did the camera make it look like it was flashing?
The last signal was indeed flashing yellow. On passing the signal you can see it means we're headed towards an occupied track. From this moment in the driver must be able to stop for everything that is in the way. 😊😊😊
@@MachinistStefan Thank you for your reply. Here in the UK the last signal would be 2 diagonal white lights which means "proceed as far as the line ahead is clear, prepared to stop short of any obstruction". I work as a signaller in Britain and have always been interested in the various ways different countries signal their trains. Now some American systems can be really confusing.........
Damn that's a smooth ride!!
Thank you. 😁😁😁
Lugar muito bonito mesmo
Nice and clear! Thanks!
My pleasure :D
Loved the video. Was the Bijlmer Arena stop, the stop for the stadium where AFC AJAX plays?
Yes! That's their stadion. 😀😀
Een hele mooie video meester !!

Hi Joselito! Thanks you so much for that comment. :D Much more to come!
Thank you so much Joselito! :D
what does the number 8 flashing next to a yellow signal mean please.
It means there's there's not enough braking distance between the next yellow and the following red signal. Therefore the driver must start slowing down from that point on. 😊😊
Brings back happy memories was there last week 😀
😁😁 And did you like it?
@@MachinistStefan yes it's a great place, I want to stay in the city again and see all the bits I missed 😍
WoW that was quite a journey. Yes I took the entire trip. You must be exhausted after this? Surely this was the end of your driving day?
What is the large canal parallel to the train tracks - shipping route?
How to folks get from the train at the Schipol stop to the airport? Not sure where the station is located relative to the airport's main terminal building.
In the long airport tunnels - what are the green-lighted doors? Exit doors?
At Arnhem - what are the man-made looking scoops out of the bank of the river - seeming to form sandy beaches?
How was that amazing building over the tracks at Utrecht CS, built with the tracks right below?
I saw a passenger walking to board with a small white dog? Dogs are allowed on your trains?
Thanks, Stefan for a wonderful adventure across your beautiful country. I especially love the two tracks running through the forests.
Hi Paul!
1. Well it's a normal working day. Of course you can be tired after it, but its part of the job. We are traveling all day long. ;)
2. That's the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal. One of the busy routes for shipping in The Netherlands.
3. The Airport is just up the stairs coming from the station.
4. Yes, those are emergency exit doors.
5. Don't know. :D
6. Haha... the Dutch just do that. Don't know how exactly.
7. Yes, they are allowed. Small dogs for free. Bigger dogs have special tickets.
You're welcome. :D
Hele leuke video meester!thumbs up
Dankjewel 😁😁😁
Awesome route!
Thank you 😁😁
So good 😍
Thank youuu 😁😁😁
Is the Amsterdam Metro somehow integrated in the railway? I noticed that for example at Bijlmer Arena the metro uses the same station as the railway trains.
The metro's have their own system but do also stop at multiple stations in Amsterdam at the same level as the trains do. For example in Bijlmer Arena, Amstel, Zuid and Sloterdijk.
@@MachinistStefan I see.
I loved watching train videos in my childhoods
And now? 😁😁
I saw on one channel someone being late on the highway from Utrecht and the traffic controllers specifically canceled the speed limit restrictions ... it was a bit like ICE-3😂
What speed limits are we talking about? ;) :D Because the speed limits cannot be cancelled that easy. :D

Compare your video an hour and a half long when you were driving along the same route, and here it is, 25 minutes long.

How can a hundred-odd kilometers slip in half an hour? If he didn’t take the VIRM train, I would I haven’t said anything yet, but a couple of years ago I saw a video with the dispersed train of the same model covering the distance from Amsterdam to Rotterdam in ... 20 minutes along the ...TGV highway🤔

Hallo . Schönes Video ist jetzt . Bin jetzt in Hoofdorp Opstell . .
Bis jetzt 59 km 👍
The train was split in two at Hoofddorp Opstel. We arrived with 10 carriages and left with only 6. :)
Mooi film Stephan!
Dankjewel 😁😁
If you are making a lengthy stop like Arena, can you go outside?
Yes I can. :) But I didn't in this case. :)
Hallo . Nächste Frage . Wurde der Fahrplan geändert . Bei einer Fahrplanauskunft stand --- IC von Utrecht nach Arnhem . Mit Halt in Veendendaal de Klomp und Ede Wageningen . Du hattest aber Stop in Driebergen Zeist und dafür in Veendendaal ohne Halt durchgefahren .
( 143 km )
On our way from Schiphol to Arnhem we drove IC 3100. On our way from Arnhem to Amsterdam we drove the 3000 serie. A little more explanation can be found in the description under the video. :D
Prachtige reportage!!!
At Bijlmer arena you stood long, were you ahead of schedule or it was planned stop?
Planned stop because of the tight schedule between Utrecht/Amsterdam/Schiphol Airport (also see description). :D
Klopt! Zie ook beschrijving onder de video. Te Hoofddorp Opstel is de trein gesplitst. 😁😁
Do you have a parrot in there with you as I hear all the shrieks and squawks, snorts and sniffles, whistles, grunts, and groans....grins
Hahaha, I love to whistle during my work. 😁😁
Hallo!
Tris_NL_Rail _ OH NEE
Mooie video in 4k kwaliteit!
Verry nice thx for posting !
My pleasure :D
Lovely long ride. Aaaaah!!!😆😆😆 I wanted to hear you whistle but couldn't as I had turned the volume off as I was watching this from office. Couldn't disturb others you know. Where to next, and how long will the next journey be?
Today a WARP SPEED video. I don't know what video I'll make for next week (yet). :) But it won't be as long as this one. This was a special. :D
I wish I knew what all the different bells and whistles meant...is there a guide somewhere that can teach me that?
There is on "Meester Paul2" his CZcams. But I think that is only in Dutch. One bell means the speed is changing (up or down). If the driver needs to slow down and dienst hit the brakes there will be a long bell ringing (no in the video). If the driver doesn't respond the train will make an emergency brake. If the brakes are applied you'll hear three short bells when the lower speed is reached.
At the stop you can also hear a ding..... Dong.... That is the train manager closing the doors.
Machinist Stefan Thanks! That explains a bit for me :)
What is the bell you hear every time?
That is the safety system for speeding. One single bell means there's a change of speed on the tracks (up or down). If the driver needs to slow down you hear three bells when the speed is achieved.
ATB
Correct
i have to know. how do you know or where can you see the speed limit? because you put the speed limit in the video but i see no indication that shows that limit for the train driver?
You can see them if you look well. There are signs next to the tracks. Yellow signs for slowing down and white squares where the speed limit must be reached. Also the light signals sometimes give speed restrictions. 😁😁
All the information from the standard signals next to the tracks all must be in the head of driver as well. Because when it's foggy we run our trains on normal speed as well.
@@MachinistStefan waaaw. yeah i see the signs now (while the video is still going). you need 100+ eyes tho its so small and if you're going fast and miss one its going to be a huge mistake. bravo to all train drivers for doing this every day
ps: if there is no new speed sign does the last speed sign count as your max then?
Correct Cedric... the last sign passed is always the one that is vallid for the place the train stops and departs again. :)
Muito bom viagem
Thanks :D And you're welcome!
Excellent video, Besides the signal speeds, do you get in cab updates as well. Can hear the bell going. ( great footage, I often split watching in sections as I got bits and bobs to do around the house and get in trouble with the wife.)
Thank you so much! On this train we work with the ATB system. This is helping to show the maximum allowed speeds. But the driver must still look outside and do all the work himself. The ATB-system is just a little help.
@@MachinistStefan Bedankt voor de details. Automatische Trein Beinvloeding.

Heel leuk
At Amsterdam Arena, what did the '8' mean on the signalling?
In combination with a yellow light it means the driver must limit the speed to 80km/h from that point on. In combination with a green flashing light it means the maximum speed as of that point is 80km/h. The 8x10 is the speed. Same with other possible numbers at the signals. :)

46:07 what is this instrument thing? ( on and around the tracks )
Anti-icing installation. Only active when the weather is really cold and ice could vuld up underneath the train. This prevents that's.

Thank you 😁😁😁
Question
Is it only one way train to go from Schiphol Airport to Nijmegen?? Thank you.
You can go to Schiphol Airport from the Amsterdam Bijlmer, Duivendrecht, Amsterdam Lelylaan and Hoofddorp side. 😁😁 60 trains an hour depart from Schiphol Airport.
@@MachinistStefan
So if i am in Schiphol Airport and need to go to nijmegen, can this train in this video takes me to nijmegen or i have to take another train???
Then there's a direct Intercity leaving from Schiphol every 15 minutes (every ten minutes in het end of 2021).
@@MachinistStefan
Ok, got this... thank you Sir,
Mooie video!
Haha... Typfoutje. Dat snap je wel. 😉
Nieuwe vraag.

Haha, thank you! :D Keeps me sharp during the day. :D
Nice video
1:28:00 bijzondere trein
Thanks! 😁
8659?
Super Video.
Hi Tom! Thanks! What do you mean exactly? Don't understand the point of a freight train blocking the path. :D
Ah now I see! :D Sharp eyes! I think the Freight train was waiting for an intercity from Utrecht to Amsterdam to pass by. The VIRM at Bijlmer was headed for Schiphol. :):D
Hallo Machinist Stefan, me danks
Hoi Stefan
