  • I drive and review the 35th Anniversary Camaro SS Convertible and give you my thoughts. This beautiful low mileage example is nearly perfect even after 25 years. What do you think about the Camaro 2002 Camaro SS?

Some 20 years ago, I bought a new 2002 Camaro Z28 because when It was announced that 2002 model year would be the end of the road for the GM F-car (Camaro/Firebird), I knew that I just had to have one. It was difficult to find a new Z28 with the 6-speed manual trans, and seemingly impossible to fine one with both the manual trans. and the SLP SS Pkg. Mine did not have the SLP SS Pkg., but it was a fully loaded black on black 6-speed manual car. I ran staggered wheel/tire setup, 16x8 w/245 tire up front and 17x9 w/275 tire out back...the 5-spoke Corvette style wheels from SLP. Upgraded sway bars, bushings, shocks, etc. Handled like it was on rails.
While doing some upgrades (SLP performance parts mostly), I discovered that the engine in mine was actually a factory installed LS-6, same block & heads (same casting numbers, etc.) as the 2002 Corvette ZO6 (rated 405hp) with exception to the camshaft (mine had the LS-1 cam; Corvette ZO6 had the LS-6 cam) and the exhaust manifolds (Corvette had freer flowing, less restrictive manifolds). I added a factory LS-6 cam, shorty headers, SLP Cold Air Intake, colder Tstat and aftermarket Tuning (Diablosport if I recall). My '02 Z28 would give a '02 Corvette ZO6 a "run for the money". Even when my '02 Z28 was bone stock, it ran well, was fun and even knocked down great fuel economy on the highway (often saw 26-27 mpg highway). AMine would (and did on some ocassions) run north of 150mph on remote stretches of the interstate. Estimate I could run high 12's in the 1/4 mile with a good launch. If I had that car (today, October 2022), without question, I'd put a Lingenfelter built LS-3 (or LS-7) in. The LS Engine family has come a long, long way since first introduced (1997 for Corvette, and 1998 for Camaro/Firebird). Today, it's common place to see "budget builds" starting with a junkyard 5.3L LS, add a Turbo and make around 550hp or more. And of course who forget the LS-9 638hp Corvette! My current ride ('21 Challenger SP/WB, 392/8A) is rated 485hp/475tq. but feels stronger than that on the street; the 3" Magnaflow Xmod exhaust (vs. stock 2.75") and the Hellcat Lower Airbox w/headlamp tube is surely adding another 20-30hp to that? Now if I could just upgrade the pistons, swap to a boost friendly cam and get that Hellion TT Kit installed! So, do we think the E85 fueled 909hp Redeye Hellcat is gonna appear??? Thanks for the videos!

Same block not same heads .... 35% of Camaro s got the LS 6 block ... Only difference is it flows better internally.. adds a couple hp ... Heads are same ... Camshaft is from Silverado..... All Camaro s got LS-6 intake manifold in 02 ... You can tell the block also cuz it's not as shiny

    Edit: also worth noting the LS1 was underrated (which you touched on 🍻). My Z28 manual car (rated 310hp) made 324rwhp/341rwtrq..and went 13.1 @ 108mph on a 2.1 60ft all bone stock. A lid / FRA got me 12.8 @ 110mph on a 2.0 60ft

On Drag radials on rear with a stall. I'm sure if you had grag tires you would of been lower 12.2-12.4 range.

It jams, too. I replaced the factory tape deck with a factory cd player monsoon from a 2002 ss. I love the car. Ls6 intake already installed and longtubes coming soon. That'll put me at about 400hp. Chevy Camaro ZL1 and SS from 1997-2002 one of best designs Camaro current redesign of Chevy Camaro design 2007-2023 unfortunately the cancellation of the Chevy Camaro in the coming future the Chevy Camaro will always be part of muscle car history and we're living in one of the best era of muscle cars because ice vehicles will be replaced in the future by a EV muscle cars 💪 I still think there will be ice vehicles but they might transition into hybrid hydrogen electric vehicles with with stricker emissions standards from the EPA I love old muscle cars, but the automotive industry is headed towards electrification on cars and SUVs and minivans so you have to just embrace it who knows what the next 20 years of vehicles are going to look like and it's going to be an exciting time.

I can't tell if that one was repainted or it came from the factory with the stripes deleted. The Camaro and Trans Am had the same HP ratings and the same amount of power options. The reason the 2002 Camaro has more HP than the 1998 Trans Am is that in 2001 they gave both cars a HP jump. The most powerful ones offered in 2002 was the SLP Camaro SS which bumped power up to 345HP and that's not counting the extra power from the ram air hood. The Trans AM version from SLP was called the Firehawk. The Firehawk had a special ram air hood, unique wheels, and sticker on the doors that said Firehawk. The Camaro versions looked the same as the SS except the optional SS grill. The SLP loudmouth and loudmouth 2 (my favorite) exhausts were very loud and had optional rectangular center mounted exhaust pipes. SLP also offered an air suspension. That's super rare because it really took away it's tight handling but made it ride really nice on bumpy roads. They were sent from the factory to be modified by SLP then sold new at the dealer. Most of the SLP options even the grill could be bought and added to a regular SS Camaro so it's really hard to spot an SLP Camaro. I almost bought a Firehawk but couldn't afford the insurance at the time but I love my 2001 Camaro SS. There are rumors that a few 2002 Camaros secretly got the 405 HP LS6 that was available in the C5 Corvette Z06. However, I haven't actually seen one so it most likely was just a rumor. There is also a super rare 2001 Trans Am Blackbird and Intimidator Camaro SS. Both of those had 380HP. GM never should have discontinued these cars. They look great and are so much fun to drive and still fast enough to have fun at the track. But a nice night with the windows down and t tops off on the open road with that V8 roaring makes it one of the best cruisers.

Idk why you would debadge a 35th anniversary LE car. I don't think it's a TRUE LE car. That SLP lid is aftermarket. Aftermarket headlights, IMO it's just a red SS made to look like a LE. Those appear to be aftermarket seat covers also

The Trans Am WS6 was not 310hp. The 2002 Pontiac Trans Am Ram Air WS6 was rated at the same 325HP as the SS Camaro
