- The Affair of the Diamond Necklace was a scandalous event that occurred in 18th-century France, and it continues to captivate historians and enthusiasts to this day. At the centre of the affair was a stunning diamond necklace that was commissioned by King Louis XV for his mistress, Madame du Barry. However, before the necklace could be delivered, the king passed away, and his successor, Louis XVI, refused to purchase it. This left the jewellers who had created the necklace with a significant financial loss.
Enter Jeanne de La Motte, a con artist who convinced Cardinal de Rohan, a high-ranking court member, that she was a confidante of Queen Marie Antoinette and could help him acquire the necklace. In reality, the queen had never met La Motte and had no interest in the necklace. Nevertheless, Rohan was fooled and bought the necklace from the jewellers using borrowed money. When the jewellers came looking for their payment, Rohan could not pay, and the entire scandal came to light. The affair ultimately led to the downfall of both Rohan and La Motte, and it further tarnished the already fragile reputation of Marie Antoinette.

I just have to say "Bravo!" to the person(s) who did the video editing on this episode. It's GORGEOUS...not just because of the images but all the other little details that pull it all together!
This one little piece of history always sticks in my mind. I've only ever seen images of the necklace laid flat, but I'm curious what it would look like on a woman dressed in period costume. Would it still look so over-the-top and gaudy even for the French court of the time? Great video, thank you!
I'll pat myself on the back, thank you 😊
Always enjoy the content and the calmness of the narration😊
Glad you enjoy it Fay, thank you 😊
This was very interesting. I find it sad that Marie-Antoinette was involved in this story. Thank you Jon 🖐
You're very welcome Anita, thanks as always 😊
The movie with Hilary Swank, Simon Baker, Brian Cox and Christopher Walken is pretty good too. Thanks for the factual details!
What Is the name of the movie please?
@@ambermarieadescat2530 "The Affair of The Necklace" , from the early 2000's , also with Adrien Brody, Jonathan Price. Directed by Nicholas Shyer.
Thanks for the info! 😊
Correction: * the Director is Charles Shyer
* actor is Jonathan Pryce.
@@goodowner5000 thank you! I had no idea that the story was featured in a film. And with Hillary Swank no less. Funny, because I like her work as an actress.
Now I am super excited to see that movie. 😃
Greed and avarice. It doesn't matter what class you're in or timeline it still boils down to greed and avarice. Thank you for your video ❤
My pleasure Rose, thank you 😊
Fascinating. Thank you
Thank you Judy 😊

Thank Richard/Maureen 😊
So sad that the Queen was a victim of the crime, & the person blamed for it.
There was a movie about thus?
What was the title?
Thanks Agnes 😊
Your videos have come a long way since you sitting in a room with a photographers light behind you. The quality of your videos were great then and still have the amazing quality now. Great job!

Love learning new stuff. Great episode.
Thanks as always Mary Ann 😊
Did the Cardinal's reputation suffer as well or was it common for cardinals to have mistresses at the time?
His reputation returned over time, but yes it was quite common that so called men of the cloth had affairs. Thanks Jane 😊
I always did feel sorry for Marie Antoinette, but I would have to say that she was not raised correctly by her mother, Marie Therese of Austria, plus she was the youngest child (14 or 15 children), of the same, and may have suffered unintentional neglect. There is nothing wrong with being humble, genuine, generous, loving, and modest before God and others. It is said in the Bible that money is the root cause of all kinds of evil. Thank you for this most interesting and educational video.
Thanks for watching Cassandra 😊
Hmmm it is also a strong moral not to nurture vipers in your nest! Yikes! What an awful viper Jeanne was! I always feel so bad for Marie-Antoinette, who, as you aptly stated, became an unfortunate target and scapegoat for the anger of the populace. On another note - I see you have gone full blown CGI in your videos, lol!
CGI, well the images are certainly more like photos than paintings. I'm always trying new stuff! Thanks as always Lisette 😊
❤
Scandal is a fascination of the people of the day.
Reputation,Reputation,Reputation!
Was Marie Antoinette originally from Germany?
In fairness to Marie Antoinette she didn't want the necklace. It was ugly like a dog halter. Her reputation preceeded her. Jean de la Motte paid the price for her schemes. Her actions helped topple the French monarchy.
Spot on Einez, thanks as always 😊
@@HistoryRoadshow Thanks Jon! 😘
as if it was such a nice and helpful thing to do and brought such a heaven on earth for France in less than half decade🤡and only opinion of Parisians mattered and rest of France can rot in hell because of being different🤡🤡🤡🤡
