  • The Affair of the Diamond Necklace was a scandalous event that occurred in 18th-century France, and it continues to captivate historians and enthusiasts to this day. At the centre of the affair was a stunning diamond necklace that was commissioned by King Louis XV for his mistress, Madame du Barry. However, before the necklace could be delivered, the king passed away, and his successor, Louis XVI, refused to purchase it. This left the jewellers who had created the necklace with a significant financial loss.
Enter Jeanne de La Motte, a con artist who convinced Cardinal de Rohan, a high-ranking court member, that she was a confidante of Queen Marie Antoinette and could help him acquire the necklace. In reality, the queen had never met La Motte and had no interest in the necklace. Nevertheless, Rohan was fooled and bought the necklace from the jewellers using borrowed money. When the jewellers came looking for their payment, Rohan could not pay, and the entire scandal came to light. The affair ultimately led to the downfall of both Rohan and La Motte, and it further tarnished the already fragile reputation of Marie Antoinette.

I just have to say "Bravo!" to the person(s) who did the video editing on this episode. It's GORGEOUS...not just because of the images but all the other little details that pull it all together!
This one little piece of history always sticks in my mind. I've only ever seen images of the necklace laid flat, but I'm curious what it would look like on a woman dressed in period costume. Would it still look so over-the-top and gaudy even for the French court of the time? Great video, thank you!

Did the Cardinal's reputation suffer as well or was it common for cardinals to have mistresses at the time?

I always did feel sorry for Marie Antoinette, but I would have to say that she was not raised correctly by her mother, Marie Therese of Austria, plus she was the youngest child (14 or 15 children), of the same, and may have suffered unintentional neglect. There is nothing wrong with being humble, genuine, generous, loving, and modest before God and others. It is said in the Bible that money is the root cause of all kinds of evil. Thank you for this most interesting and educational video.

Hmmm it is also a strong moral not to nurture vipers in your nest! Yikes! What an awful viper Jeanne was! I always feel so bad for Marie-Antoinette, who, as you aptly stated, became an unfortunate target and scapegoat for the anger of the populace. On another note - I see you have gone full blown CGI in your videos, lol!

In fairness to Marie Antoinette she didn't want the necklace. It was ugly like a dog halter. Her reputation preceeded her. Jean de la Motte paid the price for her schemes. Her actions helped topple the French monarchy.
