    This is a great, great book. I actually can't believe it exists. Looking forward to future editions.

    Nice! I recently read the first 162 issues of Spider-Man, with the omnibuses, but for the first 20 issues I read this instead of the omnibus. This book is probably the best reprint job of any classic mainstream superhero comics ever. I’ve also got the Avengers book but haven’t read it yet. I want the new Taschen Fantastic Four but foremost on my book list is the big Love and Rockets boxset coming in a few weeks so hopefully sometime after I get that I can get the FF book.

      Check out used copies of FF Essentials, Kirby sings in B&W the Epic Collection/Omni color jobs detract bc they're done with a computer.

    Tom, you are in for a TREAT. I LOVE this book. I think I read somewhere that these issues were photographed from someone’s very nice mint collection of early Spidey issues. I really enjoyed seeing all the lettering mistakes that are fixed in subsequent reprints- like Peter Parker being called Peter Palmer, Flash Thompson being “Moose,” and of course, Doc Ock calling Spidey “Super-Man.”

    Even though Spider-Man is one of my all time favorite comics/characters, I don't own any Spidey books. This is gorgeous!

    Wow! Other than the fact that your scissors seem to be maddeningly dull...great review! It's definitely going on my Xmas list!

    Just bought my copy this morning, in part because of what this video was able to illustrate. Many thanks! Gorgeous book. Can’t wait to read it!

    Taschen and Folio Society completely expose and embarrass the poor color quality of the collection reprints Marvel does in house.
    I'm really looking forward to the new Chip Kidd book. I was disappointed online listings were delayed from December 2022 to Summer 2023.

      I think they know better and are just catering to the bad preferences of their customers. A lot of buyers want the reproductions to conform to a sentimental false memory of what these comics looked like.
      Got a deal on the 1st Dr Strange omni, and was shocked how shitty it was. Just a incoherent gibberish layer of blotchy bright flat color on bright glossy paper that completely undermines the linework. No child would ever have ever fallen in love with this.

      @raphaelcurley Před rokem +1

      @@M_Campbell yes I have the Dr Strange Epic the color is bad. Marvel is so bad with these silver-age books. I have given up and buy Essentials bc the B&W newsprint is so much better.

    I would be curious what this looks like side by side with a Marvel Masterworks to see what the differences are.

      This thing destroys the MM version, I have gotten a lot of love out of my B&N MM, dozens of students of mine have read the Ditko S-M run with them. But this book will be the way I will read Ditko from this day forward.

    Haha glad I could see this. I got it several months ago. Mindblowing. Have they announced the third book yet?

    I just got my copy yesterday - WOW! What a great looking book!
    I love that close up double page spread at 15:54 - I was admiring the sketchy nature of the Spider-Man figure, and looking at the original logo underneath the pasted on logo...and then I noticed there is some white-out (or whatever white ink was used at the time) partially overlapping onto the horizontal line of the text box below the logo...
    And at 9:48 - the splash page of Amazing Fantasy 15... there it is! The horizontal line of the text box clearly shows where the white-out was used. Wow! (Is it wrong for me to GEEK OUT over something like that??)

    • @victorsixtythree
      @victorsixtythree Před rokem +1

      By the way, I pulled up a few other older reprints I have of Amazing Fantasy 15 to compare (a paperback and a Marvel Masterworks). It's hard to tell if the horizonal line of the text box had been cleaned up or not. Besides being re-colored, the 'Spiderman' logo and figure had been slightly reduced in size for some reason (maybe the page dimensions of the reprints didn't quite match those of the original comic?) I also noticed the phrase from the original reading, "Like costume heroes?" had been changed to "Like costumed heroes?" adding the "d" to "costume".

    I love this book. I ended up skipping the Avengers volume for now just because while there's a lot cool stuff, it didn't warrant a day one purchase for me. Maybe if it's available in one of Tachen's twice a year blow out sales. Looking forward to the first Fantastic Four volume coming out soon and the next/last Ditko Spider-Man volume in the future.
    Hopefully they do a single volume Doctor Strange book. Thor is going to be tricky, the first volume might be a bit of a slog until Kirby comes back full time.

    We are lucky that Benedikt Taschen is such a comic fan (he was as a retailer before he began publishing, I think he had one of the first real comic shops in Germany).

  • @victorsixtythree
    @victorsixtythree Před rokem +1

    Wow, apparently the paper was specially designed just for this collection! From the December, 2021 press release from Marvel:
    "TASCHEN’s extra-large format, close in size to the original artworks, reveal startling new details in the work of Marvel’s most acclaimed artists. For each title in the series, the most pristine pedigreed comics have been cracked open for reproduction in close collaboration with Marvel and the Certified Guaranty Company. Rather than recolor the original production artwork (as has been done in previous decades’ reprints of classic comics), TASCHEN has attempted to create an ideal representation of these books as they were produced at the time of publication. Beginning with high grade, top-quality comics sourced with the assistance of the CGC, super-high-resolution photographs of each page were made as printed more than half a century ago, using modern retouching techniques to correct problems with the era’s inexpensive, imperfect printing. This included improved and balanced ink densities and color matching, proper registration of the four-color printing and correction of thick/thin lines resulting from the flexible plates “smudging.” The end result is a finished product - as if hot off a world-class printing press produced without economic or time-pressure constraints - tailored for readers, fans, artists and collectors alike.
    Each volume features an essay by a comic book historian alongside hundreds of photos and artifacts. The books use three different paper stocks, including an uncoated and woodfree paper exclusively developed for this series that simulates the feel of the original comics."
