Well you could have gon faster if you have used speedbreaker. There is a "thing" in the game where its makes you super heavy and makes your car super responsive. So if you enter speedbreaker and sharply turn left or right and stop you launch yourself
This is literally one of the four things they explain in the tutorial lel; "So you gotta' get behind them and stay there for a few seconds. You'll get a boost of speed and when you pull out of the draft, you'll slingshot up ahead." - Nikki
When, in racing games, the AI controlled cars will keep pace and even surpass you despite you having a distance/speed advantage. It's a shitty feature made to make it seem like you're in a close race for "immersion" (and I say "immersion" with literally the heaviest quotation marks imaginable), or implemented when the developers know the player could beat the pants off the AI and they couldn't be asked to do a better job programming it.
Keep an eye on the minimap. The orange marker is the only true AI and does not rubber-band. Your partner who's talking to you and is the green marker is also driving is also in a supped car as per her character being a character who gives you drafting. If he came second to the green marker, he would still come first.
