    This store had the feel of the ‘camp’ stores that they have at campgrounds (we camped a lot growing up). Especially the higher prices but I imagine it’s harder to keep things stocked there especially in the winter.

    • @ThisAlaskaLife
      @ThisAlaskaLife  Před 2 lety +6

      Hi Myra! That is exactly what it felt like. I bet the store has a lot less during the winter when there are not nearly as many people coming through. It would be tricky! Thanks for always being here, I always love seeing your smiling face in my comments.

    I used to work for the railroad in Alaska and overnight stays in Whittier were not uncommon after bringing a train down from Anchorage. Sometimes we stayed in the Begich Tower, and sometimes at the Anchor Inn. Sometimes we'd end up laying in there way longer than expected, usually due to poor weather or tides, and that store was a life saver. I miss Alaska overall. Whittier? Not so much. LOL

    Back when l had my first job at 15yrs old in a grocery store we had to put those little stickers on each item before stacking it on the shelf, if one fell off it would be such a pain at checkout to have to run down the aisle to check how much it was!! Do you think these people get there groceries delivered from places further a field or would they travel to say a Costco to stock up? Thanks for sharing 👍

    • @emmib1388
      @emmib1388 Před 2 lety +2

      I remember when I was a child and being in the store talking to our neighbor who was working as a stock boy (do they still use that term today? Probably not!) He was showing us this new thing on the label that was called a 'bar code' and sometime in the future, they will be able to scan it and it will tell the pricing!! We were amazed at the modern technology!!

    • @brilliantbutblue
      @brilliantbutblue Před 2 lety +3

      @@emmib1388 : I remember when that came in as well!! You had to input the bar code on each item, if it went on sale it had to be re entered and yes l was in awe also!! We still have stock stackers in Australia!! Thanks for sharing.

    • @ThisAlaskaLife
      @ThisAlaskaLife  Před 2 lety +1

      Hello friend! I bet that was really a lot of work to keep tags on everything in a store. Thank goodness for the scanning barcodes nowadays, can you imagine Costco if you lost the price sticker!! I think many people drive into Anchorage and get their bulk groceries. That would be for locals but I bet seasonal workers, like those working on the fishing boats, buy more local because they probably don't have a lot of time to go into town. I am really just making assumptions but you often see people at Costco with large trailers, stocking up for faraway towns!

    • @ThisAlaskaLife
      @ThisAlaskaLife  Před 2 lety +3

      Hi June! That is always a possibility along with tsunamis being so close to the water. The 1964 earthquake did a ton of damage to Whittier but the tunnel was ok and we had a large 7.2 earthquake in 2017 that didn't damage the tunnel either. I am sure it is a possibility, there always is, but it was built well.

      Hi Vicky! The prices are high because the distance it takes to get the food and supplies up here. There is a higher cost of living all around, we make very little product up here, everything has to be imported. Wages do tend to be higher up here but there are also a lot of people living under the poverty line. Thanks for the question!
