Jerry is now the last man standing of the big 5...Not that Mr Berry has passed. The legend of these men will not be forgotten. It's amazing the 5 legends all came along at the same time to give us Rock and Roll...Jerry Lee, Chuck Berry, Elvis, Little Richard and Bill Haley.....
Usually, on Dick Clark television specials the performers would simply lip-sync their recordings, but Jerry Lee would have none of that. They put the microphone around his neck on a rope, and he performed "Great Balls of Fire" at the height of its popularity. Same, for "Breathless." These are two different dates. Two different performances.
Jerry is the king of the bad boy Rockers, he wrote the book, in fact he married a little gal from my home town that caused a bit of a stir and was somewhat a scandal at the time, (& Elvis was considered a leading the cause of juvenile delinquency due to those wiggling legs) lol, but a little bad press didn't stop Jerry Lee from becoming the Rock and Roll legend he is today, Happy 81st Birthday Jerry by the way. :)
he's got more tallent in his toenails then any other artist does in all his body. jerry lee lewis can make a crowd go nuts and don't even move. (i saw him perform twice)
wow and wow and wow! what a whole lotta raw talent all in one man! and what a man! Jerry Lee Lewis has stood the test of time, like few other pop music artists have.
just amazing...this is why rock and roll is great and thanks for technology and internet and you tube for letting me see somthing about fifty yeras ago and more!!!
I loved his music back in 1958. I was thirteen years old and my mother didn't like him because she thought he was a bad influence. But everything turned out just fine in spite of the Rock and Roll!
Actually, this was one performance on the Dick Clark Show from the Little Theater in NYC, not to be confused with American Bandstand from Philadelphia. I saw it on TV, black in white when it aired in February 1958. The songs weren't "sung consecutive" but two performance on the same show! I was 12 at the time!
WHAT HAPPENED TO ROCK AND ROLL??? The trash today is sickening- the "stars" today can't even play instruments, no bands. Who can play piano like Jerry Lee Lewis??!!
Hallehula,Jerry was one of the greatest, regrets that those fantastic days are gone but Im glad I was there and Im one of the last true Rock n Rollers of that era.Keep it comin.Howard Brent
i just seen the movie of this and just had to search it still shocked that he married his 13 yr old cousin but he says he love er so im ok with dat n wow hes an amazing singer :)
I heard 'the Killer' play this 'live' at the Congo showroom at the Sahara in the early '70's ('73?) and that night he was truly 'on FIRE!'He played a fifteen-minute version of "Drinkin' Wine" that was unbelievable as he went from 'barrel-house' to' Chopin' and right into 'broken blues riffs' that I don't think people ever heard before...!(I think he was channeling Hendrix that night, along with Gershwin and Liberace!)I feel sorry for anyone who missed that night, because I don't think anyone (maybe Neil Young) could make that much exertion on a regular basis...the Man was literally soaked in sweat! His hands on the keyboard were just a blur...how can he do that? With such perfect 'strike' ? and not lose the rhythm? What a show that was!Certainly, no performer, no matter what person or band, (even the Stones or the 'Fabs') would want to 'follow that' and try to equal such a ferocity on-stage!
Mr,uh, The Killer, etc. is wired up to an RCA BK6 lavalier microphone which is worn around the neck. Buddy Holly was miked the same way on his 12/57 Ed Sullivan appearance. It is actually more resonant as the microphone position on the chest is picking up internal body vibrations as well as the voice. Why,yes, kids the pie-ana DOES indeed appear to change direction here through the magic of big time TeeVee trickery . This is the first Beech Nut Saturday Night Show broadcast 2/14/58 from the Little Theater in NYC. In the complete broadcast, he is the second act on and does "Great Balls Of Fire". The keyboard is facing the same way BOTH times. About 25 minutes later he closes the show with "Breathless" and is mostly shot from behind giving the appearance of facing in the opposite direction. Lewis offered to play live contrary to the usual Clark M.O, of the artist doing a lipsynch which by definition was promotion as opposed to performance and paid at the rate of $00.00 per union rules. However, Clark, Sun Records and Beech Nut Gum, the show sponsor did a cross promotion where one could send 0.50 and gum wrappers and in return get a copy of the record as heard here. Lewis was more than happy to do a free performance in as much as sales of GBOF/Breathless massively spiked due to the promotion. Whatever performance fee he forfeited here was more than made up by the increased record royalties due to the promotion scheme. It was probably the single most successful record promotion of its time. Other than Lewis, the only other artist who ever performed live on the Saturday Night show was Fats Domino. The primary budgetary success of the Clark shows were due in large part because of the free appearances by the artists doing lipsynchs. Unlike today, where it seems a big revelation that an artist may not be actually singing, there was never a secret in those days that acts mimed to their records. Clark would make mention of it occasionally on air. To see possibly the worst example of this ever, look at the Gene Vincent clip of "Dance To The Bop" from the American Bandstand broadcast of 12/17/57 elsewhere on YT. Hint, concentrate on the guitar fingering. Hilarious.... Acts appearing on AB were often noted by the studio audience/dancers regarding an artist's ability to lipsynch well or not so well..
At 1:44 according to the book "Hellfire" (or "Great Balls of Fire"), the little fire-bomb burnt Jerry Lee's eyebrows as he gets up to bow. You can see the spark bounce off his face. It was on Dick Clark's American Bandstand.
The energy coming from this guy is insane
He definitely deserved more recognition than he got.
Jerry Lee Lewis was a prodigy of the piano, largely self taught, brilliant pianist.
I danced to all l this crazy music...t he best time of my life... I am now 72... What a blast!

Killing the ivory!!! Who else ever made an impact with a piano like this? It will never happen again.
he's got more tallent in his toenails then any other artist does in all his body.
jerry lee lewis can make a crowd go nuts and don't even move. (i saw him perform twice)
This is one of the only times American Bandstand didn't have lip syncing by a performer.
Great!! I miss my old friend J.W. Brown. He used to come to Gus"s in Lithonia Ga. and set in with me and Butch Owens! I sure miss the old days
wow and wow and wow!

He got the style! I was so impressed by the movie when I was little... Rock 'n Roll!
Another wild eyed southern white boy singin' the blues. And doin' a damned good job of it too.
Actually, this was one performance on the Dick Clark Show from the Little Theater in NYC, not to be confused with American Bandstand from Philadelphia. It don't get any better than this! This is the face that launched a million punk rock acts world wide in the 70's. Just ask Sid Vicious.

Raw, dangerous - the Killer was ball of energy rarely seen in our highly staged, over produced, engineered rock shows today.
