4x4 problems: Dash, Transfer case motor or Fork?

- In this video I do a quick overview of the 4x4 controls for an Hummer H3.
The hummer H3 is known for its fork to break but it may not be your problem!
The buttons on the dashboard can cause problem or the Actuator/Transfer case motor could be faulty!

Yep my 2006 h3 was binding when turning. Felt tight pulling out of parking spots. Had to do a 10 point turn because it was so tight. Tires chirped too. Turned out is was my shift fork so I got a rebuilt BorgWarner 4494 transfer case. Been a few months and so far so good. It's usually on all 2006 Hummers and Earley 2007. Those were the ones with plastic shift forks. From the middle of 2007 and up they switched to a metal shift fork.
Weird design idea if you ask me. I get why the plastic seems fine since it doesn't work hard, but it didn't pass the treshold of everyday driving.
Sad you had to change whole transfer case. But atleast now everything is good with it?

@@probonomechanic Yeah, it was a terrible design that probably saved them a dollar or two per t-case. I feel like the bean counters got a hold of this one. What actually happens is not that the shift fork breaks, rather, it wears out.
The fork rides in another piece of nylon that looks similar to a pulley. The inner surface of the fork, along with an ear at each end keep it in the channel of the "pulley". because that "pulley" spins with the shaft it's on, it wears out the inner surface of the fork, allowing it to jump out of the channel it rides in.

Could use some help-- mine drives in his full-time 4wd all the time. If I try to switch it to either high or low lock, each button behaves the same way. They blink for probably like 10 seconds and then go off. The full-time four-wheel drive never stops blinking.
Extra info -- I do hear something coming from sounds like under the floor in the rear seat area. So I'm guessing the transfer motor is getting power, But maybe not catching? Or is it that plastic fork? Thoughts?
@@reedron seems like the control module is working. So either the motor is turning but maybe doesn't get enough juice to move properly or something is preventing it to get in gear.
If the fork was broken clean off, you would see the bottons switching correctly, per example 4x4 low, but you would stay stuck in full 4x4 within the transfer case.
Best bet would be to unscrew it and try to see how it behave when you click the bottons on the module. It would show if it is the transfer motor that is behaving wrong or if it works well you need to drop your transfer case and check in it to see what ia going on.
First let's pop that small motor, it's a cheap diagnosis. Do you have someone who can help you?
My 2006 H3 was binding and clunking. Mechanic and I removed the transfer case and replaced the fork with the new aluminum one, @$40.00 CDN, and within two hours had it running fine again. Easy fix. Replacing the transfer case actuator motor now. 8 months later, cheeper for a new one $145.00CDN than a used autosalvage one, @$275.00 CDN.:(..."partsavatar"

i have an h3 2007 that is stuck on 4hi lock, if i try to change it, bottons work, will blink but truck stays in neutral, it wont move, have to put it on 4hi lock and put it on park, it makes a noice as its scraping metal and thats the only way truck will drive, any ideas what can it be?
Were you getting the traction failure, service stability system notification on the dash though??
Yes, the traction failure did prompt in the dashboard when it failed.
hi ! What can be a problem....? When I start my hummer and switch btwn 4hi, 4lo and 4lock ...it works fine ... and than I some 3-4min error 4wd comes out and than I can't switch at all :) then I need to start again the hummer ... and again the same ;)

Before I start shooting some random information, did you check with an OBD2 scanner to see which code pop?
Try something, go under the hummer and unplug your connector to the transfer case motor and clean it with some electrical cleaner or air pressure. Check if the rubber around the plug is intact and not damage. Check for corrosion or debris within the plug.

Hi, I need a bit more information. Do you mean the light on the controller on the dashboard for the 4x4?
If so check innyour fuse box under the hood. The fuse #12 is the TCCM fuse. Check if it is burn. (Change it, if it burns again it means there is a short somewhere along the wires)
Do you have a message on your dashboard? And did you try a code reading with an OBD2 reader?
My plastic transfer case shift fork was replaced with the upgraded Dorman, but I can't select 4 low (it does not light up). In addition, while the selector light does come on for 4 high and 4 high-lock, the vehicle remains in 4 high-lock making the tires skip during tight turns. Could this be the encoder motor? Will a failed encoder motor cause the light to light up on 4 high but have it locked up in 4 high-lock?
It is highly probable, the motor may have failed in that position. Can you hear the clicking noise coming from it under your seat? And do you have any message innyour dashboard
@Pro Bono Mechanic I took the motor off and had the buttons pressed. the encoder motor moves through to 3 positions when checked off of the transfer case. One thing I noticed is that the orientation appears to be 90 degrees off. This is the shift shaft cam end (isosceles connector end off of the shift cam) that connects to the encoder motor. There is no other way the encoder motor would line up other than in this position that will not allow the 4 low-lock, and the 4 high actually engages 4 high-lock. I really do not want to have the transfer case removed again. Any suggestions on how to modify the orientation of the motor by 90 degrees?@@probonomechanic

I am confuse about the 90 degree angle. Something is off but I am not sure what.
So the shaft comes straight towards the transfer case motor or are you saying it is coming at a 90 degree angle like in an x,y position instead of both being in an X axis?
My 2008 Alpha won't switch, I can switch it manually at the case, I changed the encoder motor and TCCM. Showing serv stabilitrak / abs, etc
Also, none of my buttons are stuck, it tries to shift but just blinks.
And my encoder motor (what you call the transfer case actuator) doesn't make any noise and I know it works because it's brand new
At this point, you should check if you have power that gets to the plug.
Maybe its a bad connector. Check to make aure all the pins within the plugs are clean and undamaged.
Follow the plug that connects to your actuator. Look for kinks or melted wires. It could be a pinch between something or got damage by rocks
Ok i did removed the actuator and took it apart then used the round metal to turn the t case to 4high. Still my h3 is moving...

So if I understood, you remove the actuator and moved the fork to the 4High position. The fork moved without any problem.
But your H3 is still moving?

Would you accept to give us details and what happened exacly when it broke.
It would help other in the same situation as you do diagnose their problems. So when they check the comments they could see what you did.
my 2006 h3 adventure is stuck to 4HIGH LOCK and wont move. when i press the 4High low or high it just blink the still stuck on 4high lock.
It looks like the transfer case shift motor (module) is not work. Do you have a message in your dashboard that says "stab service"?

What I suggest is to try to listen for the shifting of the motor. Logicly, if the fork ia broken it will shift in 4x4 low lock but stay stuck in 4high lock.
Because of that it's either the motor is dead (maybe disconnected) or the fork is stuck for a reason.
Go down and remove it, check the wires for any pinch or damage and check to see any damage. Big chance you'll need to change it.

Well, if its in great shape, the H3T is a rare model, so the value can be really interesting: collector or resell.
It really depends. It could be a serious problem or a simple one, really depends on the symptoms.
If you have money, its not too much stress to replace the 4x4 controller, actuator and transfer case. But if you are a bit short on cash. Maybe go for a drive and check the specific symptoms, and see from there.
There are other fish in the sea, and if this one is a lemon or simply a dead-beat skip it for one that is in better shape.

Hello help appreciate my 2007 h3 went neutral on 4h. I replaced the transfer fork and the encoded motor. I drove fe miles after replaced and 4h wen neutral again any Idea? 🙏

Did you rebuild the transfer case, just change the fork or did you change the bearing too?
For the encoder, is it a refurbished one?
Is this happening in 4 high lock or just one 4 high? What type of road is it when it happens?

Appearently the 4x4 doesn´t want to engage anymore. But it drives every day without the 4x4. The owner says it is the motor, that doesn´t want to engage anymore. Could you tell if true?
Hmm, hard to tell without a diagnostic or having more details on the symptoms.
The hummer has an always 4x4 system. So it should be 4x4 right now. If it isnt it could be a serious problem...so I eblieve he means it doesnt switch to the high lock 4x4 or low lock 4x4.
My advice is that you should get the vehicle checked before buying. The H3 isn't that rare and if this one is in too much bad shape yoi can find another one.
They are good vehicle, but they do request your attention once in a while to keep them working fine.
Where you able to test the 4x4 controller to try switching from 4x4 high to the 4x4 lock? If yes, what did it do? And is there a message in the dashboard that say something about traction control failure or abs faults?
I pushed 4 low on mine and now won't come out, neither the 4 high or 4 high lock lights come on when I push the buttons
Is the light for the 4 low on? It feels your controller is not working, could be a botton for the 4 low is stuck behind and the controller can't record the other command input.
Is there any code showing? (Obd2 scanner)
@@probonomechanic no codes showing,,,the 4 high lock button was stuck in but I pulled it back out and still nothing, only the 4 low light stays on
Usually when they don't record like that it's related to the controller itself in the dash. But what could be happening is the 4 high lock is still making contact even tho the front button is back. Maybe try to play with it a bit more, or remove the center console and remove the controller, try some contact cleaner (cleaner made for eletronics) and play with all the 3 buttons.
If you do a lot of off-roading or live in a place with a lot of dust, it may build up behind the button and prevent the proper contact.
I have a video on how to remove the center console, it is pretty easy to do if you want to go there.
@@probonomechanic I pulled the controller on the dash off last weekend, cleaned it even though it didn't show any dust, plugged it back in, same results, tomorrow I plan on pulling off the transfer case motor to see if the problem is there

I'm guessing that the transfer case motor isn't making any noise and that the 4x4 controller will blinka few sec and come back to the 4low?
Mine was just the buttons being stuck with time and dirt!
Just make sure the part fit your model year!

It seems like the air conditioner is low on refrigerant.
Fill back the air conditioner with refrigerant and let me know.
If the problem persists, the problem could be something else.
